Surgical treatment of colic in the miniature horse: a retrospective study of 57 cases (1993-2006).

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: It has been suggested that the rate of post operative abdominal adhesions in miniature horses is higher than that for other breeds. However, few reports exist in the veterinary literature describing complications and long-term survival following surgical treatment of colic in these horses. OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of surgical lesions in miniature horses with acute abdominal disease in terms of clinical signs, surgical management, post operative treatment and complications, as well as short- and long-term survival. METHODS: Medical records of 57 Am

Local Treatment of Osteomyelitis Using Sodium Calcium Silicophosphate Bioceramics for Antibiotic Delivery: In Vitro Assays and Clinical Evaluation.

Osteomyelitis is a serious bone infection that causes inflammation and damage to the affected tissue. Conventional treatments include prolonged, high-dose systemic antibiotic therapy, and debridement surgery, which may ultimately lead to amputation. Recent studies have been conducted on local antibiotic delivery systems, using biomaterials as potential candidates. One of the main advantages of local treatment is that it reduces recovery time, minimizes the side effects associated with high doses of antibiotics used in systemic treatment, and allows for targeted treatment of the affected area.

Understanding canine oral neoplasia: intrinsic rather than extrinsic features represent key risk factors in a 39-year analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Canine oral neoplasia is often detected late in the course of the disease, necessitating radical surgeries frequently combined with adjuvant chemotherapy or radiotherapy for positive outcomes. Although there has been extensive analytical and epidemiologic work on human oral cancer, research in veterinary medicine has been lacking. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and risk factors associated with canine oral neoplasia to enhance early detection by improving screening. METHODS: Patient data from 1985 to 2024 from the University of California-Davis Veterinary Teaching Hospi

The impact of home-prepared diets and home oral hygiene on oral health in cats and dogs.

Many factors influence the oral health status of cats and dogs. The present study aimed to elucidate the influence of feeding home-prepared (HP) food v. commercial pet food on oral health parameters in these animals and to investigate the effect of home oral hygiene on oral health. The study surveyed 17,184 dogs and 6371 cats visiting over 700 Polish veterinary surgeries in 2006-7 during a Pet Smile activity organised by the Polish Small Animal Veterinary Association. All animals underwent conscious examinations to assess dental deposits, size of mandibular lymph nodes and gingival health. An

Traditional methods used for controlling animal diseases in Iran.

In ancient times in Iran, infectious diseases of animals and human beings were referred to as choleraic diseases. Rhazes (9th century), followed by Avicenna (10th century), Jorjani (11th century) and others, had specific opinions on the cause and effect relationship in these diseases, which recall the fermentation theory of Louis Pasteur. In ancient Iran, the methods adopted for veterinary procedures were those of general theoretical and practical medicine, including the humoral theory, accurate diagnosis, signs and symptoms, and the prescription of herbal and mineral medicines or substances o

Anatomical variations of the external jugular veins and collaterals incidentally diagnosed with computed tomography in Shih Tzu dogs.

INTRODUCTION: The external jugular vein (EJV) is a superficial vein of the neck in dogs; its significance is evident in veterinary clinical practice, encompassing surgeries and interventional procedures. However, there have been no reports on EJV variations in canines, despite extensive studies on variations in the jugular veins in humans. This study aimed to use CT imaging to evaluate the prevalence of anatomic vascular variations of the EJVs in Shih Tzu dogs and to describe the clinical and CT characteristics of these vascular variants. METHODS: This is a retrospective, multi-center study.

Effects of epidural morphine and transdermal fentanyl analgesia on physiology and behaviour after abdominal surgery in pigs.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the physiological and behavioural effects of opioid analgesic treatment in pigs subjected to abdominal surgery. Ten Swedish Landrace x Yorkshire pigs (20 +/- 4 kg b.w.) were submitted for intestinal cannulation. The pigs were allocated into two groups during one preoperative, one surgical and two postoperative days. All pigs were anaesthetized with medetomidine, tiletamine and zolazepam. One group was treated with epidural morphine (0.1 mg/kg) preoperatively, and transdermal fentanyl patches (50 microg/kg/h) were applied behind the ear immediately aft

Immunohistochemical Expression of Programmed Death-Ligand 1 and Cytotoxic T-Lymphocyte Antigen-4 in Canine Cutaneous Mast Cell Tumours.

Mast cell tumours (MCTs) are the most frequent cutaneous neoplasia of the dog, and they have very variable biological behaviour and survival times. Surgery is still the best treatment, and despite the several adjuvant therapies described, many cases are very aggressive and resistant to these treatments making it urgent to find new therapeutic targets. Nowadays, immunotherapy targeting immune checkpoints has been described as a complementary treatment for several human cancers, but it is still very scarcely studied in veterinary medicine. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the expressio

Comparison of St. Thomas II Cardioplegia and Modified Del Nido Cardioplegia in Dogs Undergoing Mitral Valve Surgery.

Myocardial protection has become an essential adjunctive procedure in veterinary cardiac surgery. Del Nido cardioplegia is a good alternative to the traditional St. Thomas II (ST) cardioplegia in open heart surgery in humans. This study aims to compare intra- and postoperative results between ST cardioplegia and modified del Nido (mDN) cardioplegia in mitral valve surgery in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD). This retrospective study was conducted using clinical records of 16 MMVD dogs that underwent either ST or mDN cardioplegia. We measured cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) time, a

Recognizing uterine torsion as a differential diagnosis in pregnant cats with severe anemia to provide appropriate and timely care in the absence of a definitive presurgical diagnosis.

A pregnant female domestic longhair cat ~8 mo of age was referred to the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) for a diagnostic evaluation of severe anemia (PCV: 10.8%) after a 2-day period of lethargy. A CBC, serum biochemistry profile, FeLV/FIV testing, and abdominal radiographs were completed and did not determine a cause for the anemia. Abdominal ultrasonography identified 1 viable and 6 nonviable and fetuses, anechoic fluid in the uterus, and a mild volume of peritoneal effusion. A whole-blood transfusion and C-section with ovariohysterectomy were performed even

Ultrasonographic assessment of early leakage in intestinal sutures in dogs.

Intestinal suture dehiscence is one of the most feared complications following gastrointestinal surgery in both human and veterinary medicine, increasing the morbidity and mortality of these patients. Clinical and laboratory early signs of septic peritonitis are not always easily identifiable while prompt treatment should help decrease postoperative morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study is to describe the ultrasonographic (US) features of confirmed leakage of intestinal sutures (LIS) and to evaluate if this imaging technique can be useful as noninvasive tool for the early diagnosis of

Histologically low-grade, yet biologically high-grade, canine cutaneous mast cell tumours: A systematic review and meta-analysis of individual participant data.

Low-grade canine cutaneous mast cell tumour (cMCT) with metastasis at the time of treatment is uncommonly reported, with few studies focusing on this specific clinical entity. The specific objective of this study was to systematically review the veterinary literature and perform a meta-analysis summarizing the clinical presentation, treatments reported and clinical outcomes from dogs with histologically low-grade cMCT and metastasis present at initial treatment. A total of 980 studies were screened with eight publications providing data on 121 dogs ultimately included. The most common treatmen

Comparison of Pain-Like behaviors in two surgical incision animal models in C57BL/6J mice.

BACKGROUND: Management of pain post-surgery is crucial for tissue healing in both veterinary and human medicine. Overuse of some analgesics such as opioids may lead to addictions and worsen pain syndromes (opioid-induced hyperalgesia), while underuse of it may affect the welfare of the patient. Therefore, the importance of using surgery models in laboratory animals is increasing, with the goal of improving our understanding of pain neurobiology and developing safer analgesics. METHODS: We compared the widely used plantar incision model with the laparotomy surgery model and measured pain-relat
