Immunohistochemical study of lysozyme in various benign sweat apparatus tumors.

We investigated the existence of lysozyme in various sweat apparatus tumors by adopting the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex method. Positive reactions for lysozyme were found in four cases of apocrine cystadenoma, hidradenoma papilliferum, and an apocrine sweat apparatus benign tumor resembling "apocrine spiradenoma", all of which derive from apocrine sweat apparatus. On the other hand, in ten cases of syringoma, eccrine hidrocystoma, clear cell hidradenoma, eccrine spiradenoma, and eccrine poroma, which derive from eccrine sweat apparatus, no positive stainings for lysozyme were obtained. In

Coulometric titration of sweat collected with the Webster Collection System.

Presented here are chloride results obtained by direct titration of undiluted sweat collected with the Webster Sweat Collection System. Six hundred and thirty-two sweat chloride results were reported on 604 patients. Thirty-six of thirty-nine sweat chloride results of 60 mM or greater were from patients with cystic fibrosis. Three results (61, 63 and 64 mM) were from a 12-year-old female who had one episode of rectal prolapse but after one year does not have clinical evidence of cystic fibrosis. There was one patient with a cystic fibrosis variant with intermediate range sweat chloride. All ot

Diazepam-induced coma with bullae and eccrine sweat gland necrosis.

Bullous skin lesions that indicate sweat gland necrosis have been known to occur in drug-induced coma resulting from barbiturates and in carbon monoxide poisoning. To our knowledge, this is the first cases in which diazepam is implicated in causing bullous lesions over pressure points, and the first case showing on biopsy specimen eccrine sweat gland and sweat duct necrosis. Penile and oral lesions are being described here for the first time to our knowledge. The following mechanisms could be responsible for the skin lesions: hypoxia, local pressure, hyperthermia with excessive sweating, and a

Sweat Electrolyte Profiles During Daily Physical Activities Among Chinese Adults.

Background: Recreational exercise has become increasingly common among Chinese adults. However, population-specific data on sweat rate and electrolyte composition during typical daily physical activities remain limited. Therefore, this study aimed to comprehensively characterize the hydration status, sweat rate, and sweat electrolyte composition among Chinese adults engaging in common daily exercises under controlled environmental conditions, and to examine sex-related differences. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 285 healthy adults (143 men, 142 women) were assigned to one of three sep

Bioinspired nanocellulose-based ultrathin hydrogel bioadhesives with sweat-resistant properties.

Hydrogels have gained prominence as a distinctive material for smart healthcare devices and wearable electronics, owing to their inherent biocompatibility, tissue-like mechanical properties and superior water and oxygen permeability. In most application scenarios, hydrogels are required to have certain adhesion properties. However, current hydrogel adhesive systems are fundamentally constrained by two intrinsic material restrictions: low mechanical strength, and compromised adhesion in humid environments (under conditions such as sweating and bleeding), which severely restrict their practical

Sweat as a diagnostic biofluid: analytical advances and future directions.

The use of sweat as an alternative specimen for biological analyses is well recognised and has been successfully applied in forensic toxicology and clinical health assessments. Compared to conventional matrices such as urine and blood, sweat samples are easy to obtain, are less invasive and present a reduced number of endogenous interferents. Advanced analytical techniques in sweat analysis have considerably expanded capabilities in the isolation of drugs, detection of complex metabolites and identification of biomarkers. The ability to detect a broader range of substances with greater sensiti

Blood, sweat, tears and fibrosis: when overtraining injures the liver.

The crosstalk between the skeletal muscles and the liver is receiving growing attention, as patients with chronic liver disease often develop a loss of skeletal muscle mass. In these patients, particularly those with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, physical exercise improves insulin sensitivity and hepatic steatosis. However, excessive exercise may impair mitochondrial function, inflammation, and liver health. The study by Liu et al. demonstrates that overtraining promotes liver fibrosis through myocyte-derived small extracellular vesicles. Here, we comment on the nov

Low-Grade Sweat Gland Carcinomas: A Review-A CME Article.

BACKGROUND: Primary cutaneous adnexal carcinomas (PCACs) are rare and biologically heterogeneous neoplasms that present significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Among them, microcystic adnexal carcinoma (MAC), syringoid eccrine carcinoma (SEC), primary cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma (PCACC), secretory carcinoma, apocrine cribriform carcinoma (PCCAC), primary cutaneous mucinous carcinoma, and neuro-endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma are clinically and histologically distinctive yet frequently confused with one another. OBJECTIVE: To synthesize and critically appraise

Sweat Gland Tumors Arising on Acral Sites: A Molecular Survey.

Recurrent oncogenic drivers have been identified in a variety of sweat gland tumors. Recently, integration of human papillomavirus type 42 (HPV42) has been reported in digital papillary adenocarcinoma (DPA). The main objectives of the present study were (i) to provide an overview of the prevalence of previously identified oncogenic drivers in acral sweat gland tumors and (ii) to genetically characterize tumors in which no recurrent genetic alteration has been identified yet. Cases of acral sweat gland tumors were identified from the database of the French network CARADERM. After histologic rev

Small molecules facilitate single factor-mediated sweat gland cell reprogramming.

BACKGROUND: Large skin defects severely disrupt the overall skin structure and can irreversibly damage sweat glands (SG), thus impairing the skin's physiological function. This study aims to develop a stepwise reprogramming strategy to convert fibroblasts into SG lineages, which may provide a promising method to obtain desirable cell types for the functional repair and regeneration of damaged skin. METHODS: The expression of the SG markers cytokeratin 5 (CK5), cytokeratin 10 (CK10), cytokeratin 18 (CK18), carcino-embryonic antigen (CEA), aquaporin 5 (AQP5) and α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) wa

Poorly Differentiated Metastatic Carcinoma of Possible Eccrine Sweat Gland Origin.

Sweat gland carcinomas are a rare group of cancer, representing less than .01% of all diagnosed skin malignancies. We report the case of a 32-year-old male who presented with a fungating lesion on the posterolateral side of his left knee. Immunohistochemical results were positive for cytokeratin 5/6 and cytokeratin 7, consistent with possible eccrine gland origin. Our patient underwent wide local excision of the mass with lymph node dissection. Pathology confirmed the diagnosis of poorly differentiated carcinoma of possible adnexal, eccrine gland origin. He completed taxol/cisplatin-based chem

Characterization of nucleic acids from extracellular vesicle-enriched human sweat.

BACKGROUND: The human sweat is a mixture of secretions from three types of glands: eccrine, apocrine, and sebaceous. Eccrine glands open directly on the skin surface and produce high amounts of water-based fluid in response to heat, emotion, and physical activity, whereas the other glands produce oily fluids and waxy sebum. While most body fluids have been shown to contain nucleic acids, both as ribonucleoprotein complexes and associated with extracellular vesicles (EVs), these have not been investigated in sweat. In this study we aimed to explore and characterize the nucleic acids associated

Autonomic Sweat Responses in REM Sleep Behavior Disorder and Parkinsonism.

BACKGROUND: Autonomic dysfunctions including sudomotor abnormalities commonly occur in early Parkinson's disease (PD), but little is known about potential sudomotor abnormalities in idiopathic REM Sleep Behavior Disorder (iRBD), a strong prodromal marker of PD. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to assess sudomotor dysfunction by galvanic skin response using SudoScan, as well as other autonomic markers in 49 iRBD, 40 PD (21 with RBD, 19 without), 20 atypical parkinsonisms, and 41 age-matched controls. METHODS: All subjects underwent SudoScan of their hands and feet, a 30-second electrocardiogram with as
