Deoxyadenosine (dAdo) has been recognized as the toxic metabolite in the immunodeficiency disease associated with adenosine deaminase (ADA) deficiency. Under ADA deficient conditions, dAdo accumulates intracellularly as deoxyadenosine triphosphate (dATP) which by interference with ribonucleotide reductase, prevents DNA synthesis. Polymorphous light eruption (PLE; actinic prurigo) is a relatively common dermatologic disease. People suffering from it have a pruritic skin eruption on exposed areas. Using monoclonal antibodies to cell surface antigens and fluorescent cell sorter analysis, we studied peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets after bone marrow transplantation (BMT). The proportion of T and B cells in the peripheral blood of smallpox patients was determined.
