Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is the leading cause of death among gynecological malignancies worldwide. The five-year survival rates for stage IIIC and IV patients are 29% and 13%, respectively. Type-2 EOC cells have been found to be associated with this late stage disease. In contrast, women diagnosed in stage 1 disease, which mostly exhibits type-1 cells, have a high 5-year survival rate (90%). Recent progress in understanding the pathogenesis of EOC and inflammatory signaling pathways revealed that type-2 cells frequently express a deleted or mutated TP53 (60-80%), or aberrations in BRCA1

UNLABELLED: Severe dengue virus (DENV)-associated diseases can occur in patients who have preexisting DENV antibodies (Abs) through antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE) of infection. It is well established that during ADE, DENV-antibody immune complexes (ICs) infect Fcγ receptor-bearing cells and increase the systemic viral burden that can be measured in the blood. For protection against infection with DENV serotypes 1 to 4, strongly neutralizing Abs must be elicited to overcome the effect of ADE. Clinical observations in infants who have maternal DENV Abs or recent phase II/III clinical trial

Cronobacter has attracted considerable attention due to its association with meningitis and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in newborns. Generally, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) facilitates bacterial translocation along with inflammatory responses as an endotoxin; however, the pathogenicity of Cronobacter LPS and the strategies to alleviate the toxicity were largely unknown. In this study, inflammatory responses were stimulated by intraperitoneal injection of Cronobacter malonaticus LPS into Sprague-Dawley young rats. Simultaneously, Bacteroides fragilis NCTC9343 were continuously fed through gavag

BACKGROUND: Sodium alendronate (ALN) is widely used to treat postmenopausal osteoporosis, but both estrogen deficiency and antiresorptive therapy may impair alveolar bone repair after tooth extraction. A clinically relevant but insufficiently explored scenario involves estrogen-deficient individuals receiving hormone replacement therapy (HRT) who subsequently initiate ALN treatment. This study investigated whether estradiol valerate (E) replacement attenuates ALN-associated disturbances in alveolar bone repair in ovariectomized (OVX) rats.
METHODS: Sixty-three female Wistar rats were divided

AIM: Chronic heart failure (CHF) results in both increased cardiac sympathetic activity and myocardial inflammation. The aim of this study was to identify the relationship between severity of heart failure (i.e., NT-proBNP and LVEF), cardiac sympathetic activity (123I-mIBG scintigraphy), and measures of inflammation in subjects with stable, optimally treated CHF. In addition, the predictive value for cardiac events (i.e., ventricular arrhythmia, progression of CHF and cardiac death) of 123I-mIBG parameters and these inflammatory markers was evaluated.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-five CHF pat

BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is diagnosed based on the clinical symptoms, risk factors, and pulmonary function tests. Exposure to cigarette smoke (CS), microbial infection stimulates monocytes and macrophages to rapidly synthesise and release inflammatory factors. A previous study of Trollius altaicus (TAF) revealed that it had significant anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidation effects on a pneumonia disease. Based on recent studies of the inflammatory pathway of toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)/nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), we will explore the influence of TAF on COPD.

Aspergillosis is a fungal infection caused by various species of Aspergillus, most notably A. fumigatus. This fungus causes a spectrum of diseases, including allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis, aspergilloma, chronic pulmonary aspergillosis, and invasive aspergillosis. The clinical manifestations and severity of aspergillosis can vary depending on individual immune status and the specific species of Aspergillus involved. The recognition of Aspergillus involves pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) such as glucan, galactomannan, mannose, and conidial surface proteins. These are rec

Breastfeeding anchors infant immunity and long-term health, but its benefits are threatened by Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) mastitis, an increasingly prevalent condition driven by antimicrobial resistance and therapeutic limitations. Beyond compromising maternal wellness, mastitis threatens the safety and continuity of breast milk, highlighting a critical need for innovative intervention strategies. Herein, we demonstrated that α‑ketobutyrate (α-KB), a metabolite of the transsulfuration pathway, mitigated S. aureus‑induced inflammation, oxidative stress, and blood-milk barrier (BMB) disru

Inflammation has profound effects on the innervation of affected tissues, including altered neuronal excitability and neurotransmitter release. As Ca(2+) influx through voltage-gated Ca(2+) channels (VGCCs) is a critical determinant of excitation-secretion coupling in nerve terminals, the aim of this study was to characterize the effect of overnight incubation in the inflammatory mediator tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNFalpha; 1 nM) on VGCCs in dissociated neurons from mouse superior mesenteric ganglia (SMG). Voltage-gated Ca(2+) currents (I(Ca)) were measured using the perforated patch clamp

BACKGROUND: Persistent inflammation is linked to poor outcomes in patients with a history of myocardial infarction. The inflammatory state has been associated with activation of neutrophils as well as with regulatory T-cell (Treg) deficiency. The role of Tregs in the regulation of neutrophil survival has been postulated recently. Here, we investigated neutrophil apoptosis along with the potential impact of Tregs on neutrophil apoptosis in patients with postmyocardial infarction chronic coronary syndrome, compared with healthy controls.
METHODS: Twenty patients and 19 controls were included. N

Cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) may aggravate tissue injury by promoting oxidative stress, inflammation and cell death after ischemic injury. This study aimed to identify cerebral I/R-associated hub genes and to reveal the underlying mechanism on ischemic I/R. Differential expressed genes (DEGs) were identified from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database, and hub genes were screened from a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network. The I/R rat model was constructed using the middle cerebral artery occlusion and reperfusion (MCAO/R), and Hmox1 was silenced to investigate its effects on

The human calcium-sensing receptor gene (CASR) has 8 exons, and localizes to chromosome 3q. Exons 1A and 1B encode alternative 5'-untranslated regions (UTRs) that splice to exon 2 encoding the AUG initiation codon. Exons 2-7 encode the CaSR protein of 1078 amino acids. Promoter P1 has TATA and CCAAT boxes upstream of exon 1A, and promoter P2 has Sp1/3 motifs at the start site of exon 1B. Exon 1A transcripts from the P1 promoter are reduced in parathyroid tumors and colon carcinomas. Studies of colon carcinomas and neuroblastomas have emphasized the importance of epigenetic changes-promoter met

Ischaemia-reperfusion injury (I/RI) is a common cause of acute kidney injury (AKI). The molecular basis underlying I/RI-induced renal pathogenesis and measures to prevent or reverse this pathologic process remains to be resolved. Basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF2) is reported to have protective roles of myocardial infarction as well as in several other I/R related disorders. Herein we present evidence that FGF2 exhibits robust protective effect against renal histological and functional damages in a rat I/RI model. FGF2 treatment greatly alleviated I/R-induced acute renal dysfunction and lar

INTRODUCTION: Huntington's Disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative ailment characterized by progressive motor, cognitive, and psychiatric decline, linked with mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation. Few effective treatments are available for Huntington's. Additionally, the therapeutic effects of natural polysaccharides against neurodegenerative disorders have not yet been fully explored. This study aimed to investigate the neuroprotective potential of Aloe Polysaccharides (APs) against 3-Nitropropionic Acid (3- NPA)-initiated HD-like symptoms in rats.

Areas where Plasmodium falciparum transmission is holoendemic are characterized by high rates of pediatric severe malarial anemia (SMA) and associated mortality. Although the etiology of SMA is complex and multifactorial, perturbations in inflammatory mediator production play an important role in the pathogenic process. As such, the current study focused on identification of inflammatory biomarkers in children with malarial anemia. Febrile children (3 to 30 months of age) presenting at Siaya District Hospital in western Kenya underwent a complete clinical and hematological evaluation. Children

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury disrupts the brain-gut axis, which involves the activation of the toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)/myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88)/nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) pathway and gut microbiota dysregulation. Acorus tatarinowii Schott (AT) and Panax notoginseng saponins are traditional Chinese medicines with neuroprotective potential, yet the mechanism underlying their combined action remains elusive.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 144 Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into groups including: sham, model (transient middle cerebral artery occl

BACKGROUND: In airway epithelium, thymus and activation-regulated chemokine (CCL17) and macrophage-derived chemokine (CCL22) are induced by defective epithelial barriers such as E-cadherin and attract the effector cells of Th2 immunity. However, the association between the epithelial barrier and CCL17 expression has not been studied in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyp (CRSwNP). Thus, we aimed to evaluate the expression of CCL17 and its regulation by Th cytokines in nasal polyp (NP) epithelial cells.
METHODS: The expression and distribution of CCL17, CCL22, E-cadherin and/or epidermal g
