Clinical decision-making in gastric taeniasis: risks of endoscopic removal and role of staged therapy.

This case describes a rare presentation of gastric taeniasis in a young woman with chronic atrophic gastritis and subcutaneous lesions consistent with cysticercosis. Stool microscopy confirmed Taenia spp eggs, though species identification was limited by the absence of morphological or molecular confirmation. While clinical evidence strongly suggested Taenia solium, this limitation is acknowledged. The case underscores the importance of clinical judgement in avoiding endoscopic removal, given risks of incomplete extraction, rupture and anaphylaxis. A staged pharmacologic regimen was employed:

Impact of a 3-year mass drug administration pilot project for taeniasis control in Madagascar.

Taenia solium is endemic in Madagascar and presents a significant burden on the population and the health system. The parasite cycles through humans who host the adult tapeworm, and pigs that host the larval stages. Accidental infection of humans may occur with the larval stages which encyst in the nervous central system causing neurocysticercosis, a major cause of seizure disorders and a public health problem. One of the interventions to facilitate the control of the disease is mass drug administration (MDA) of the human population with taeniacide. Here we describe a pilot project conducted i

Prevalence of Echinococcus granulosus taeniasis in stray dogs in the region of Constantine (North-East Algeria).

In North Africa, the domestic dog is regarded as the main reservoir for infection by Echinococcus granulosus of domestic livestock and man. In Algeria, there is very little data on the rate of infestation of dogs, while the prevalence of E. granulosus in the definitive host is a very reliable marker of the potential risk of transmission of cystic tapeworm to humans and livestock. To find out this information, a survey was conducted to assess the prevalence of infection with E. granulosus in stray dogs in the region of Constantine (North-East Algeria). We autopsied and examined 120 stray dogs,

Prevalence and economic implications of Taenia solium taeniasis and cysticercosis in Uttar Pradesh State of India.

From 1980 to 1985, 3550 pigs, 530 cattle, 370 buffalo, 1850 sheep and 2100 goat of different breeds, age and sex from different parts of Uttar Pradesh State (India) were screened for the presence of cysticerci. Economic losses due to condemnation of affected meat were calculated. The overall incidence in pigs was 9.3%. Indigenous breeds brought from rural areas had the highest infection rate (8.9%). Cysticerci were commonly observed in the muscles of fore and hind limbs, tongue, neck and brain but a few cyst were also seen in other organs including heart, kidney and spleen. No statistical diff

A Neurocysticercosis Case from Timor-Leste, A Previously Unidentified Region of Human Taeniasis Endemicity.

Neurocysticercosis, a central nervous system infection caused by the zoonotic parasite Taenia solium, is a leading cause of acquired epilepsy worldwide. It is common in areas with extensive pig farming and pork consumption. This report presents an unusual case of neurocysticercosis in a 28-year-old male from Timor-Leste, a region of nonendemicity for human cases of Taenia solium. The patient, who had experienced seizures precipitated by headaches, was admitted to the hospital on June 15, 2020. Comprehensive examinations, including neuroimaging, identified multiple cystic lesions suggestive of

Control of Taenia solium taeniasis/cysticercosis: The best way forward for sub-Saharan Africa?

Taenia solium taeniasis/cysticercosis is a neglected parasitic zoonosis with significant economic and public health impacts. Control measures can be broadly grouped into community health education, improvements in hygiene and sanitary conditions, proper meat handling at household and community level, improved standards of meat inspection, pig management, treatment of individual patients and possibly human populations, and treatment and/or vaccination of porcine populations. This manuscript looks critically into currently existing control options and provides suggestions on which (combination o

Taenia solium taeniasis/cysticercosis in Papua, Indonesia in 2001: detection of human worm carriers.

A preliminary study to detect human worm carriers of Taenia solium in Papua (Irian Jaya), Indonesia was carried out using stool examinations for the detection of copro-antigens and adult proglottids after chemotherapy, and confirmation by mitochondrial DNA analysis using expelled proglottids and metacestodes developed in NOD/Shi-scid mice from eggs of expelled proglottids. Approximately 8.6% of the local population in Kama (5/58), 1 km from the local capital city centre, Wamena, were confirmed to harbour adult T. solium using these techniques.

[Taeniasis, amebiasis and other intestinal parasitosis in school age children from Michoacan State, Mexico].

92.3% schoolchildren aged 6-13 years of a mexican rural village, suspected foci of Taenia solium cysticercosis were screened for intestinal parasites with the main purpose to know the infection rate by taeniasis. An stool sample was collected to schoolchildren of the village and 95.4% of a urban private school as comparative group. Laboratory examinations were performed with the most accurate technics, included microscopies with an ocular micrometer. The general parasitation rate was 4 times higher in the rural village, but the percentages of Taenia spp. infection were 0.6% both of them. Entam

Immunity in taeniasis-cysticercosis I. Vaccination against Taenia taeniaeformis in rats using purified antigen.

Artificial immunization of rats against Taenia taeniaeformis was studied using somatic antigen (Som-Ag) and excretory-secretory antigen (ES-Ag). It was found that both Som-Ag and ES-Ag stimulated immediate-type hypersensitivity and delayed-type hypersensitivity reactions of similar levels. Antibody levels rose from the 2nd wk and peaked around the 6th and 7th wk. Both IgM and IgG were detectable from the 2nd wk onwards, with IgG at a considerably higher level compared to IgM. It terms of protection, 90-100% reduction in cyst counts were detected if the rats were challenged 10 days or more afte

Case Report of Taeniasis with Gastric Manifestations on CT and Worm Expulsion Post CT Examination.

INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND: In March 2025, a 31-year-old female patient was admitted to Mangkang County People's Hospital in Tibet, complaining of upper abdominal pain for two days, which worsened after meals. She reported a habit of consuming raw beef. This case is unique as it highlights the diagnostic value of CT imaging in identifying taeniasis, particularly when worms are expelled post-CT examination. Previous imaging studies often lacked specific signs, with many cases only confirmed post-surgery. This case provides a valuable reference for the radiological characteristics of taeniasis. CA

A Rare Cause of Gastrointestinal Bleeding: Taeniasis in a Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Patient.

Taenia infection is a globally distributed parasitic disease that is uncommon in developed countries. Taeniasis typically presents with mild or no symptoms, and anemia is not a usual feature. We report the case of a 50-year-old woman with a history of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass who presented with a history of abdominal pain, asthenia, and melena. Blood tests revealed severe anemia, prompting endoscopic evaluation. EGD showed only postsurgical changes, and lower endoscopy revealed no bleeding source. Video capsule endoscopy demonstrated blood near the Roux-en-Y anastomosis and in the ileum. Enter

Prevalence and distribution of intestinal parasitic infections in taeniasis endemic area of North Sumatera, Indonesia.

A group of helminthic and intestinal protozoa causes intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs), affecting more than 2.5 billion people worldwide. IPIs are diseases closely associated with poor hygiene and sanitation, concentrated in underdeveloped regions and among populations with low socioeconomic status. Consequently, most prevalence is in Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia, with local habits or risk factors that could affect its prevalence. The aim of this study was to determine how hygienic practices, sanitation, and local behavior of eating raw meat (hinasumba) contributed to the prevalence of IPI

Towards a cysticercosis-free tropical resort island: A historical overview of taeniasis/cysticercosis in Bali.

Taeniasis and cysticercosis are known to be endemic in several Indonesian islands, although relatively little recent epidemiological data are available. As most Indonesian people are Muslims, taeniasis/cysticercosis caused by the pork tapeworm, Taenia solium, has a restricted presence in non-Muslim societies and is endemic only among some Hindu communities on the island of Bali. Bali has long been known to be endemic for taeniasis/cysticercosis; almost a century ago levels of cysticercosis of 20-30% were described in cattle and 2-3% in pigs. Few studies of taeniasis/cysticercosis were undertak

Rare case of disseminated cysticercosis and taeniasis in a Japanese traveler after returning from India.

We report disseminated cysticercosis concurrent with taeniasis in a 31-year-old male Japanese, who had visited India three times and stayed for 1 month each time during the previous 1 year. The patient presented increasing numbers of subcutaneous nodules and expelled proglottids, although numerous cysts were also found in the brain in imaging findings, though no neurological symptoms were observed. Histopathological and serological findings strongly indicated cysticercosis. We found taeniid eggs in his stool by microscopic examination and revealed them as the Indian haplotype of Taenia solium

Epidemiology and management of cysticercosis and Taenia solium taeniasis in Europe, systematic review 1990-2011.

BACKGROUND: Cysticercosis is caused by the invasion of human or pig tissues by the metacestode larval stage of Taenia solium. In Europe, the disease was endemic in the past but the autochthonous natural life cycle of the parasite is currently completed very rarely. Recently, imported cases have increased in parallel to the increased number of migrations and international travels. The lack of specific surveillance systems for cysticercosis leads to underestimation of the epidemiological and clinical impacts. OBJECTIVES: To review the available data on epidemiology and management of cysticercos
