Tattoo-associated panuveitis: A 10-year follow-up.

INTRODUCTION: There has been an increasing number of tattoo-related uveitis without evidence of systemic sarcoidosis. This finding may indicate a possible association of tattoos with uveitis. CASE DESCRIPTION: This report is a 10-year follow-up of a single case of tattoo-related uveitis with no proven systemic sarcoidosis. CONCLUSION: Literature review suggests possible pathogenesis and the patient's management is discussed. This case highlights the importance of a good systemic history and physical examination, especially with regard to tattoos.

Vibrio vulnificus septic shock due to a contaminated tattoo.

We present a case of Vibrio vulnificus septic shock and cellulitis in a patient with chronic liver disease that occurred after obtaining a leg tattoo with subsequent seawater exposure in the Gulf of Mexico. Initial suspicion for V. vulnificus was high and he was started on empiric doxycycline and ceftriaxone at admission. Blood and wound cultures grew oxidase positive and comma-shaped Gram-negative rods ultimately confirmed to be V. vulnificus. Despite aggressive initial treatment, the patient developed septic shock and died. This case highlights the association of chronic liver disease and hi

Severe type IV hypersensitivity to 'black henna' tattoo.

A 16-year-old Bangladeshi girl presented with a 9-day history of an extensive pruritic, erythematous, papulovesicular skin eruption to both forearms. Appearance was 5 days following application of a home-made henna preparation. Examination revealed ulceration and scabbing along the whole henna pattern and early keloid formation. A diagnosis of type IV delayed hypersensitivity reaction superimposed by infection was initially made. As in this case, home-made henna preparations commonly combine commercial henna with black hair dye, paraphenylenediamine (PPD). PPD, widely known as 'black henna', d

Allergic reactions to henna-based temporary tattoos and their components.

Temporary henna-based tattoos, particularly popular among western tourists holidaying in exotic places, can expose to the risk to develop allergic reactions. Although hypersensitivity to henna is extremely rare, para-phenylenediamine, which is sometimes added to henna to obtain a dark, blackish color, is a frequent contact sensitizer. The purpose of this article is to review the literature about allergic reactions to temporary henna tattoos and outline the causes, clinical aspects and complications of this practice that should not be regarded as innocuous and risk-free.

Reactions to the different pigments in tattoos: a report of two cases.

Tattoos are defined as the intentional or accidental deposit of pigment into the skin. These pigments have been associated with various dermatoses such as allergic contact dermatitis, lichenoid dermatitis, photoinduced reactions, and granulomatous, sarcoid and pseudolymphomatous reactions. The objective of this report was to describe the various types of reactions to pigments and the importance of recognizing them clinically. Two cases are reported: one of lichenoid dermatitis resulting from a reaction to the red pigment of a tattoo and the other of a pseudolymphoma resulting from a reaction t

Allergic contact dermatitis from temporary henna tattoo.

Temporary henna tattooing has been very popular during recent years. Henna (Lawsonia inermis) is a plant from the Lythraceae family. For henna tattooing, henna dye is used. It is a dark green powder, made from the leaves of the plant, used for hair dyeing and body tattooing. Very often, para-phenylenediamine (PPD) is added to henna dye to make color blacker and to speed up dyeing. PPD may be a very potent contact sensitizer. We report a 9-year-old boy with allergic contact dermatitis due to temporary henna tattooing. Patch testing showed a positive reaction to PPD. After the treatment with top…

Inflammation in green (chromium) tattoos during patch testing.

We report three patients with permanent tattoos and chronic dermatitis. During patch testing, the patients' dermatitis worsened, and the previously quiescent green-colored portions of the tattoos became inflamed. All three patients were patch-tested and had positive reactions to potassium dichromate 0.25% in petrolatum. Avoidance led to the resolution of both the dermatitis and the tattoo inflammation. We recommend assessment of permanent tattoos for inflammation in all patients undergoing patch testing, for additional diagnostic correlation.

[Temporary henna tattoos: Sometimes serious side effects].

Temporary henna tattoos are becoming increasingly popular among Western tourists during summer holidays, especially children, teenagers and … necessarily strong reactions and sensitization to PPD. In the absence of any legal control of henna tattooing practices, prevention requires the annual provision of information to Western consumers, especially young people and their parents.

Treatment of traumatic tattoo with the Q-switched Nd:YAG laser.

Traumatic tattoos are undesirable tattoos caused by different foreign bodies such as fireworks' particles, sand, metals, glass, gunpowder, asphalt, dust, or petroleum products embedded forcefully in the dermis. We report the case of a 54-year-old man who presented with sand and asphalt tattooing on his face following a bomb explosion 15 years ago. Q-switched Nd:YAG laser at a wavelength of 1064 nm with a spot size of 4 mm and a fluence of 7.96 J/cm(2) were applied to treat the patient. The patient tolerated the treatment very well. Most of the blue dots became whitened immediately after the pr…

[Contact dermatitis caused by labile henna skin tattoo].

BACKGROUND: Contact dermatitis to henna are rarely reported. Most of the time, they are related to additives, especially scented oils or paraphenylene diamine. This latter substance is added to shorten the time of application and to enhance the darkness of the color. We report one case of an allergic contact dermatitis to henna skin tattoo, probably related to a paraphenylene diamine derivative. CASE REPORT: A 25-year-old woman developed an allergic contact dermatitis at the site of application of two henna skin tattoos on her right arm. She never dyed her hair and wore dark clothing without

Treatment of traumatic tattoos with the Q-switched neodymium:YAG laser.

BACKGROUND: Treatment for traumatic tattoos often results in incomplete removal of the pigment or produces unacceptable scars or textural changes. Successful results using Q-switched ruby lasers have been reported. The Q-switched neodymium:YAG laser, with a wavelength of 1064 nm and a pulse duration of 5 to 7 nanoseconds, penetrates deeper into the skin and has less interaction with melanin than the Q-switched ruby laser. OBSERVATIONS: The present study documents 32 cases of traumatic tattoos involving 51 sites of the face, trunk, and extremities in patients ranging in age from 6 to 58 years.

Inflammatory reactions from organic pigments in red tattoos.

Two different red pigments used for tattooing were found to give rise to inflammatory reactions in the skin. No inorganic component was found in the pigments. NMR and MS analyses elucidated the molecular structures of two different organic compounds. A bright red pigment was found to be an aromatic azo-derivative, and a red-violet pigment was found to be linear quinacridone. A strong exposure to UV-light was reported in most cases prior to the onset of the inflammation.
