OBJECTIVE: To acknowledge the clinical significance of anxiety in depressed patients, DSM-5 included criteria for an anxious distress specifier for major depressive disorder. In the present report from the Rhode Island Methods to Improve Diagnostic Assessment and Services (MIDAS) project, we modified our previously published depression scale to include a subscale assessing the DSM-5 anxious distress specifier.
METHOD: From December 1995 to August 2013, 773 psychiatric outpatients with major depressive disorder completed the Clinically Useful Depression Outcome Scale (CUDOS) supplemented with

BACKGROUND: Although depression is linked to an increased risk of dementia, the association between late-onset depression (LOD) and amyloid burden remains unclear. This study aimed to determine amyloid deposition in patients with LOD compared to healthy controls (HC) using amyloid-beta (Aβ) positron emission tomography (PET) images and neuropsychological assessments.
METHODS: Forty patients first diagnosed with major depressive disorder after the age of 60 (LOD) and twenty-one healthy volunteers (HC) were enrolled. Depression and anxiety were evaluated using the 17-item Hamilton Depression Sc

BACKGROUND: Sleep distrurbances involves daytime preoccupation about sleep, which plays a critical role in perpetuating sleep disturbances. Recent cognitive models highlight the importance of daytime processes, like processing sleep-related information and interpretations during waking hours, in influencing sleep quality and quantity. The Sleep Preoccupation Scale (SPS) quantifies this daytime cognitive activity related to sleep. This study aimed to translate and validate an Arabic version of the SPS for assessing sleep preoccupation among Arabic speakers.
METHODS: 523 Arabic speakers (mean a

OBJECTIVE: Dysphagia affects 2.3 %-16 % of the general population and increases with age. It can lead to malnutrition, weight loss, aspiration pneumonia, and emotional symptoms such as anxiety and depression. Mental health disorders impact appetite and muscle mass, further worsening dysphagia. Additionally, cultural and economic factors influence anxiety and depression, which can either result from or contribute to dysphagia. Studies on the relationship between anxiety, depression, and swallowing function using FEES are limited in Asian populations. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (H

The authors examined the effect of state anxiety on the personality test scores of 56 patients receiving treatment for panic disorder and agoraphobia. The tests were administered before treatment and again 6 weeks later. For the 40 patients who improved by 5 or more points on the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale, significant changes in personality measures were observed at week 6, including increased emotional strength and extraversion and decreased interpersonal dependency. The authors conclude that state anxiety, like depression, is a possible confounding factor in personality measurement, and

INTRODUCTION: One of the most common applications of transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) at low current intensity is to induce a relaxed state or reduce anxiety. With technical advancement, different waveforms, montages, and parameters can be incorporated into the treatment regimen. We developed a novel protocol to treat individuals with anxiety disorders by transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS).
METHODS: A total of 27 individuals with anxiety disorders underwent tACS treatment for 12 sessions, with each session lasting 25 min. tACS at 5 Hz was applied to F4 (1.0 mA), P4 (

To assess the severity of self-reported anxiety in psychiatric adult outpatients (> or = 18 yr. old) who were diagnosed with psychotic disorders, the Beck Anxiety Inventory was administered to 55 (50%) women and 55 (50%) men who were diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, schizoaffective, or delusional disorders. The internal consistency of the scores was high (coefficient alpha=.92), and the scores were not significantly correlated with sex, being Euro-American, or age. Furthermore, the mean cores of the three diagnostic groups were comparable. Based on the interpretive cut-off score guidelin

BACKGROUND: Increasingly researchers and clinicians have called for perinatal mental health depression screening to be broadened to also screen for significant levels of anxiety. This study therefore aimed to compare the screening performance during pregnancy of four self-report anxiety measures, as well as a generic mood question.
METHOD: The measures tested were two measures of general anxiety (the anxiety subscales of the Edinburgh Depression Scale and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), and two measures of pregnancy specific anxiety by Huizink and colleagues, and Rini and colleagu

Cognitive models of social anxiety posit that there are several types of maladaptive beliefs responsible for persistent social anxiety. Although these beliefs are theoretically important, currently there is no validated measure of these beliefs in Japan. In the present study, we translated into Japanese a well-validated measure of these beliefs, the Self-Beliefs Related to Social Anxiety (SBSA) Scale. The psychometric properties of the scale were also examined in two nonclinical samples ( ns = 401 and 30). Using confirmatory factor analysis, the Japanese version of the SBSA was found to have a

BACKGROUND: The perception of symptoms is a cornerstone in asthma management, but studies concerning this aspect provide conflicting evidence. The visual analog scale has been proposed as a useful tool for assessing perception of respiratory symptoms. The present study investigated whether visual analog scale assessment of perception of asthma symptoms was correlated to lung function or clinical features.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study enrolled 388 subjects with asthma (159 males; mean age 39.7 y). Perception of asthma symptoms was assessed by the visual analog scale; lung function was m
