N-acetylaspartate reductions in the mediodorsal and anterior thalamus in men with schizophrenia verified by tissue volume corrected proton MRSI.

OBJECTIVE: Deficits in the mediodorsal and anterior nuclei of the thalamus may contribute to the psychopathological symptoms of schizophrenia. These thalamic nuclei have been found to be abnormal in schizophrenia and have close connections with other brain structures implicated in the disorder. We therefore examined schizophrenia-related alterations in brain metabolite levels specifically in the mediodorsal and anterior thalamic subregions. METHOD: We used in vivo proton magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging ((1)H MRSI) to measure N-acetylaspartate (NAA), choline-containing compounds (Cho)…

Parallel pathways of seizure generalization.

Generalized convulsive status epilepticus is a life-threatening emergency, because recurrent convulsions can cause death or injury. A common … trosplenial cortex, and insular cortex also contained tdTomato-labelled neurons. In addition, motor thalamic nuclei such as anterior and ventromedial, midline, reticular, and posterior thalamic nuclei were also activated. Furthermore, circuits proposed to be crucial for systems consolidation of memory: entorhinal cortex, retrosplenial cortex, cingulate gyrus, mid …

[Bilateral paramedian thalamic infarction: a case with MRI and gamma-emission tomography].

A 41-year-old woman presented with a history of sudden onset of a dementia with frontal signs and antero-retrograde amnesia. CT showed a bilateral paramedian thalamic infarct which was confirmed by MRI. The study of regional cerebral blood flow showed a decrease in both frontal regions. Results of imaging suggested lesions of the ventro-oral, latero-polar and intralaminar nuclei as well as of the mammillo-thalamic tract. The dorso-median nucleus appeared to be relatively spared.

The association between neurodegeneration and local complement activation in the thalamus to progressive multiple sclerosis outcome.

The extent of grey matter demyelination and neurodegeneration in the progressive multiple sclerosis (PMS) brains at post-mortem associates w … in the medial nuclei near the ventricular margin, whilst neuronal loss was greatest in the lateral thalamic nuclei. The extent of thalamic neuron loss was not associated with thalamic demyelination but correlated with the burden of white matter pathology in other forebrain areas (Spearman r = 0.79, p < 0.0001). Only thalamic neuronal loss, and not that seen in o …

Nucleus-specific thalamic involvement in seizure networks differentiates neuromodulation outcomes.

Closed-loop neuromodulation via responsive neurostimulation (RNS) of the thalamus has emerged as a promising therapy for drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE), particularly in patients with broad or multifocal onset. However, response to thalamic RNS is inconsistent, and there is a crucial need to identify factors that distinguish responders from non-responders. Given the heterogeneous composition of the thalamus, the specific contributions of individual thalamic nuclei during seizures may explain the variability in outcomes between patients and could potentially serve as biomarkers for guiding target…

Lesions of the paraventricular thalamic nucleus attenuates prepulse inhibition of the acoustic startle reflex.

The paraventricular thalamic nucleus (PVT) is a midline nucleus with strong connections to cortical and subcortical brain regions such as the prefrontal cortex, amygdala, nucleus accumbens and hippocampus and receives strong projections from brain stem nuclei. Prepulse inhibition (PPI) is mediated and modulated by complex cortical and subcortical networks that are yet to be fully identified in detail. Here, we suggest that the PVT may be an important brain region for the modulation of PPI. In our study, the paraventricular thalamic nuclei of rats were electrolytically lesioned. Two weeks after…

Motor neglect following left thalamic hemorrhage: a case report.

We present a report on a patient who developed unilateral motor neglect of the right hemibody after a left thalamic hemorrhage. He presented with pure motor neglect without aphasia, ideomotor apraxia, or unilateral spatial neglect due to a lesion in the centromedian parafascicular (CMPF) and ventrolateral (VL) nuclei of the left thalamus. Although unilateral motor neglect is usually associated with right hemispheric lesions, a left thalamic lesion may also result in isolated motor neglect.

Thalamic degeneration.

A man of 61 died after an illness of 20 years duration. The clinical picture displayed progressive dementia, loss of memory, apathy, inertia, emotional lability, temporal and local disorientation, visual hallucination and apraxia. Neuropathological findings predominated in the thalamus and displayed extensive nerve cell loss and gliosis in the anterior, medial, and posterior formations, whereas the lateral formations were somewhat better preserved. The lateral amygdala were severely affected. The cortex showed widespread moderate damage in the third or fourth layer which are interpreted as tra

Developmental anatomy of the thalamus, perinatal lesions, and neurological development.

The thalamic nuclei develop before a viable preterm age. GABAergic neuronal migration is especially active in the third trimester. Thalamic axons meet cortical axons during subplate activation and create the definitive cortical plate in the second and third trimesters. Default higher-order cortical driver connections to the thalamus are then replaced by the maturing sensory networks, in a process that is driven by first-order thalamic neurons. Surface electroencephalographic activity, generated first in the subplate and later in the cortical plate, gradually show oscillations based on the inte…

The expression of SEIPIN in the mouse central nervous system.

Immunohistochemical staining was used to investigate the expression pattern of SEIPIN in the mouse central nervous system. SEIPIN was found to be present in a large number of areas, including the motor and somatosensory cortex, the thalamic nuclei, the hypothalamic nuclei, the mesencephalic nuclei, some cranial motor nuclei, the reticular formation of the brainstem, and the vestibular complex. Double labeling with NeuN antibody confirmed that SEIPIN-positive cells in some nuclei were neurons. Retrograde tracer injections into the spinal cord revealed that SEIPIN-positive neurons in the motor a…

Cerebellar and thalamic stimulation treatment for epilepsy.

The present chapter describes the most important available experimental and clinical evidence on the role of electrical stimulation of the cerebellum or the thalamus in the control of epilepsy. Cerebellum serves as an integrator of sensory information and regulator of motor coordinating and training. The sole output of the cerebellum is inhibitory Purkinje cell projections to deep cerebellar nuclei in the brainstem. Cerebellar stimulation in animal models of epilepsy has given mixed results. Nevertheless, more than 130 epileptic patients have been subjected to cerebellar stimulation and the re

Subcortical aphasia.

We critically review the literature on subcortical aphasia, suggest that a number of traditional concepts regarding mechanisms of aphasia are inconsistent with now abundant data, and propose several new hypotheses. The absence of aphasia in 17 reported cases of dominant hemisphere striatocapsular infarction and the finding of nearly every conceivable pattern of language impairment in 33 different reported cases of striatocapsular infarction provide strong evidence against a major direct role of the basal ganglia in language and against disconnection or diaschisis as mechanisms of nonthalamic s

Mating call phonotaxis in female American toads: lesions of central auditory system.

Female American toads were tested for mating call phonotaxis (prostaglandin-induced) after brain lesions. The pretrigeminal nucleus, all of the telencephalon (except the preoptic area and immediately adjacent septal area), the dorsal thalamus (including all of the anterior nuclei and most of the central nuclei), the optic tectum, and the dorsal and medial parts of the torus were removed without interferring with the hormonal sensitization, acoustic triggering, or production of phonotaxis. These lesions removed most of the forebrain and much of the midbrain auditory areas. These data are compar

The vestibulothalamic projections in the cat studied by retrograde axonal transport of horseradish peroxidase.

Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was injected or iontophoretically ejected in various thalamic nuclei in 63 adult cats. In 11 other animals HRP was deposited outside the thalamic territory. The number and distribution of labelled cells within the vestibular nuclear complex (VC) were mapped in each case. To a varying degree all subgroups of VC appear to contribute to the vestibulothalamic projections. Such fibres are distributed to several thalamic areas. From the present investigation it appears that generally speaking, there exist three distinct vestibulothalamic pathways with regard to origin as…
