In order to obtain sufficient quantities of pure populations of cells or a single cell from surrounding tissue for analytical investigation, we have developed an ultrasonic microdissection system. The system utilizes a vision-based method for detecting the contact between the microdissection needle tip and a target surface. A multilayer stack piezoelectric actuator is employed to generate ultrasonic vibrations for histological isolation. PURPOSE: The paper describes some thin layer chromatographic procedures that allow simple and rapid separation and identification of penicillins and cephalosporins from complex mixtures.

OBJECTIVES: Clinically significant minor depression is among the most common mental disorders in the elderly individuals and is associated with considerable medical and psychosocial morbidity. Despite its clinical impact, the biological basis of minor depression in the elderly individuals remains poorly understood. Self-organized and strained CdSSe quantum dot (Q-dot) thin films have been grown on ITO-coated glass substrates by novel wet chemical route. The Q-dots are (002) oriented faceted pyramids with average particle size of 7.5 nm. The X-ray diffraction results reveal the formation of a solid solution of CdSSe. Atomic force microscopy is used to investigate the morphology of the nanocrystalline thin films. The energy dispersive X-ray analysis spectrum confirms the presence of Cd, S, and Se in the films. Optical absorption and photoluminescence spectra show the blue shift for quantum dot thin films.

The finding of familial haematuria without a history of deafness or renal impairment is often assumed to indicate a benign prognosis. However, we describe three families in whom Alport and thin basement membrane nephropathy were separately identified within the same pedigree. Our findings illustrate the importance of fully investigating families with haematuria, even if thin basement nephropathy has been diagnosed in one member.
