Thymoma Staging: An Analysis of the Different Schemas.

Over the last years, a number of changes has taken place in the evaluation of thymomas. More recently, the introduction of a TNM staging system in the assessment of thymic epithelial tumors, in general, has been put forward. Important to highlight is that this TNM system is not based on tumor size, and because of that shortcoming, it was in need to borrow most if not all of the information from the experience derived from other schemas that over the years have been tested with larger series of cases. Also important to recognize is that this TNM system is nothing new as previous authors in the

State of the art of genetic alterations in thymic epithelial tumors.

The rapid advent of technology in recent years has resulted in a substantial increase in our knowledge of the molecular underpinnings of thymic epithelial tumors. In addition to previously described chromosomal aberrations and alterations in DNA methylation, genome sequencing has helped unravel hitherto unknown mutations in these tumors. Attempts are also being made to develop gene signatures to help in the identification of patients likely to benefit from adjuvant therapy. Some of the recently identified genetic alterations have the potential to serve as targets for biological therapy, thus o

Case Report and Literature Review: Intrathyroid Thymic Carcinoma.

This case report details a case of intrathyroid thymic carcinoma (ITTC). ITTC is extremely rare with few reports. Diagnosis is difficult due to a lack of specific features and depends on pathology. A 36-year-old male was diagnosed. His condition and relevant tests are described. The tumor was removed, and he recovered well. This case report also discusses ITTC's characteristics, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis, emphasizing its rarity and the need for a better understanding.

Our experience with robotic-assisted thymic surgery.

Thoracic surgery is increasingly influenced by the development of minimally invasive approaches which have also influenced surgery in the area of the anterior mediastinum. The previously standard approach to the thymus via partial sternotomy was gradually replaced by the videothoracoscopic approach in most cases. In recent years, robotically assisted surgery has been gaining ground worldwide in this area, as well. The aim of our paper is to provide a comprehensive overview of procedures in the field of the thymus, including their indications, and to share our first experience with robot-assist

Cystic thymomas and thymic cysts. A review.

Six cases of large thymic cyst are described; five were cystic thymomas and one was nonneoplastic. Two of the thymomas were not only grossly degenerate but showed severe chronic inflammatory change, so that the diagnosis might be missed. The classification of cysts into congenital, inflammatory, and neoplastic groups is discussed. Cystic teratomata of the thymus, lymphatic cysts, and bronchogenic cysts are classed separately since thymic location does not affect their natural history. Cystic thymomas are still not well known clinically, and the literature on the subject is reviewed. It is prob

Iodine concentration by the thymus in thyroid carcinoma.

A 14-yr-old boy underwent a total thyroidectomy with bilateral neck dissection for a papillary carcinoma with lymph node metastases. Total-body scanning with 3.7 GBq 131I revealed radioiodine accumulation in the anterior mediastinum. CT and MRI demonstrated a mediastinal mass which corresponded to the area of increased radioactivity. Five months later, another therapeutic dose of 131I was followed by a sternotomy and removal of the thymus because a hand-held radiodetecting surgical probe demonstrated that the thymus was the mediastinal structure which concentrated iodine. Thymus histology was

Thymoma With Myasthenia Gravis: A Study of Two Cases.

Thymoma is a rare, primary neoplasm of the thymus gland, commonly presenting in adults and associated with autoimmune diseases, most commonly myasthenia gravis (MG). Despite its generally indolent behavior, the variability in clinical presentation and potential for malignancy necessitates detailed evaluation and management. In this report, we present two cases: a 41-year-old male and a 39-year-old female, both of whom presented with a mediastinal mass with symptoms of myasthenia. Further investigation, including imaging and histopathological examination, confirmed the diagnosis of a type B2 th

Thymic cavernous haemangioma in a dog.

A 12-year-old male neutered Australian Shepherd Dog was presented to Charlotte Animal Referral & Emergency with a history of a thoracic mass. On physical examination, physiological parameters were within the normal ranges, and a complete haemogram and serum biochemistry profile were unremarkable except for mild thrombocytopenia. A computed tomography scan revealed a 21 × 15 × 12.7 cm thoracic mass encompassing the cranial mediastinum and extending to the right caudal thorax. The mass was surgically removed and histopathological evaluation revealed that it comprised remnants of the thymus and a

A rare case of thymic carcinoid presenting with gastrointestinal symptoms and pericardium effusion.

BACKGROUND: Thymic carcinoid is one of an extremely rare type of malignant neuroendocrine tumor with a poor prognosis. Invasion of thymic carcinoid to other organs could lead to devastating consequences. It has been reported that thymic carcinoid mainly invaded to the pleura, lungs, liver, pancreas and bone, while rarely to the cardiac, especially to the ventricle. CASE PRESENTATION: A 53-year-old man presented with gastrointestinal symptoms and persistent pericardial effusion. Multiple imaging tools, including chest computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), 18F-Fluorodeoxyg

Giant solitary fibrous tumour of the liver.

BACKGROUND: Solitary fibrous tumour (SFT) is an uncommon mesenchymal neoplasm that most frequently affects the pleura, although it has been reported with increasing frequency in various other sites such as in the peritoneum, pericardium and in non-serosal sites such as lung parenchyma, upper respiratory tract, orbit, thyroid, parotid gland, or thymus. Liver parenchyma is rarely affected. Clinically, SFTs cause symptoms after having reached a certain size or when vital structures are involved. In recent years, SFTs are more often identified and distinguished from other tumours with a similar ap

[Thymic carcinoma].

Thymic epithelial tumors are mainly consisted of thymoma, thymic carcinoma, and thymic carcinoid. And thymic carcinoma is very rare neoplasm. The classification of thymic carcinoma has remained a subject of controversy for many years. The outline of thymic carcinoma has been clarified by "Atlas of Tumor Pathology: Tumors of the Mediastium (AFIP)" and "Histrogical Typing of Tumours of the Thymus (WHO)" published recently. Squamous cell carcinoma is by far the most common in Japan. Thymic carcinoma is a predilection for male. The peak of age was 40-60 years. Thymic carcinoma already had contiguo

Spindle epithelial tumor with thymus-like differentiation (SETTLE) of the thyroid.

BACKGROUND: Tumors of the so-called intrathyroidal epithelial thymoma type are a rare group of thyroid neoplasm tumors. Of this type of tumor, spindle epithelial tumor with thymus like differentiation (SETTLE) has been reported only 17 times in English literature. METHODS: An 18-year-old woman was initially seen with a 6-cm left thyroid mass that was resected with a left thyroidectomy. Histopathologic features of the excised left thyroid tumor together with an immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy led us to a diagnosis of SETTLE. RESULTS: Most of the specimen was composed of highly ce
