BACKGROUND: Subacute thyroiditis is often misdiagnosed owing to its nonspecific symptoms, which can mimic other conditions. Accurate diagnosis relies heavily on thorough physical examination and careful interpretation of laboratory tests.
CASE INFORMATION: A 53-year-old female of Iranian (Persian) ethnicity was initially misdiagnosed with sinusitis after presenting with persistent anterior neck pain, fever, and worsening fatigue. As her symptoms progressed, she was later diagnosed with pyelonephritis, further delaying the recognition of her underlying condition. After multiple visits, a compr

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Subacute thyroiditis which is typically characterized by cervical pain and fever is caused by viral infection and is seen after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. Here we report a post-vaccination subacute thyroiditis after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination.
ABSTRACT: Subacute thyroiditis (SAT) is possibly caused by a viral infection and is typically characterized by cervical pain and fever. SAT associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection or SARS-CoV-2 vaccination has been reported, albeit in limited numbers. A 34-year-old woman was referred to our clinic with typical SAT symptoms. The diagnosis was

PURPOSE: Subacute thyroiditis(SAT) is a destructive thyroiditis associated with viral infections. Several SAT cases associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection/vaccination were recently reported. We aimed to evaluate prospectively all cases applied to our tertiary center and their relationship with SARS-CoV-2 during 16 months of the pandemic. Cases during similar pre-pandemic period were recorded for numeric comparison.
METHODS: Prospective study took place between March 2020 and July 2021. SAT was diagnosed by classical criteria. Swabs for SARS-CoV-2 and a wide respiratory viral panel (RV-PCR) were

We present the case of a 38-year-old male with a history of acute chest pain associated with electrocardiographic ST-segment elevation and levels of myocardial damage markers. Few studies have evaluated chest pain and elevated troponin T during subacute thyroiditis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the reported case of myopericarditis associated with increased thyroid hormones in the bloodstream and accompanied by a significant increase in troponin T and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging findings of myopericarditis during the acute phase of subacute thyroiditis.

SUMMARY: There is emerging evidence of an association between COVID-19 vaccination and subacute thyroiditis. We present the case of a 42-year-old female healthcare worker who was diagnosed with subacute thyroiditis 4 days after receiving her second dose of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. Her clinical course followed the classical pattern for thyroiditis with spontaneous return to euthyroidism at 6 months post-presentation. The autoimmune/inflammatory syndrome induced by adjuvants has been implicated as a cause of autoimmune conditions post-vaccination and is a potential mechanism for subacute thyroid

The frequency of recurrence of subacute thyroiditis (SAT) is rather high, reaching 20⁻30%. The reason for SAT relapse is still unknown. Recently, we have demonstrated the association between SAT and the presence of HLA-B*18:01, DRB1*01, and C*04:01, apart from the previously known HLA-B*35. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the correlation between SAT-associated HLA haplotypes and the risk of SAT recurrence. HLA-A, -B, -C, -DQB1 and -DRB1 were genotyped using a next-generation sequencing method in 49 SAT patients. The patients were divided into the following HLA groups: 1. HLA-B*35

A 68-year-old woman who underwent distal pancreatectomy combined with resection of the celiac axis had an abdominal wall recurrence and resection 2 years after the first surgery. She was treated with S-1 at an outpatient clinic following the surgery. She returned to the clinic with a high fever after the S-1 administration and was diagnosed with febrile neutropenia. However, treatment for febrile neutropenia including antibiotics and G-CSF did not improve her symptoms. Her history of chronic severe neck pain and painful enlargement of her thyroid gland suggested thyroiditis. After blood tests

BACKGROUND: High resolution ultrasonography features have also been described as having a useful supporting role in the diagnosis of subacute granulomatous thyroiditis (ST), and images are generally characterized by heterogeneous hypoechoic areas of the affected tissue with lack of flow on color Doppler US.
PURPOSE: To determine the sonographic features of subacute granulomatous thyroiditis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of patients referred at the Endocrine and Metabolic Unit of our Institution between January 2010 and December 2011.
RESULTS: A total of 7520 patient

Subacute thyroiditis (SAT) is an extremely rare complication of influenza vaccination. Several infectious agents have been related with SAT. It is also well known the association between HLA-B35 and the development of SAT. We describe a case of subacute thyroiditis and dyserythropoesis occurring shortly after administration of an influenza vaccine in a 55-year-old man with history of diabetes and psoriasis, family history of autoimmunity without clinical evidence of acute viral infection prior to the onset of symptoms. We propose that, the events occurring in the patient may be explained as re

OBJECTIVE: Subacute thyroiditis (SAT) is a transient inflammatory disease of the thyroid. We evaluated the clinical characteristics based on laboratory and imaging studies in patients with SAT before treatment.
PATIENTS: We reviewed the medical records of 852 patients (107 men and 745 women) with SAT who visited our thyroid clinic at Kuma Hospital from 1996 through 2004.
RESULTS: SAT developed most often in female patients aged 40 to 50 years, with significant seasonal clusters during summer to early autumn. While the rates of any virus infections and diseases did not differ from those in th

Thyrotropin secreting tumors constitute 0,9 to 2,8% of all pituitary tumors. Thus, it is very rare tumor of this endocrine gland. Standards of the diagnosis of TSH-omas are based on me lack of inhibition of TSH levels in the presence of increased free thyroid hormones and abnormal, neoplastic intrasellar or parasellar mass. The additional criterion is lack of response of TSH after TRH stimulation. The proper treatment is surgical excision (selective adenomectomy) by the transsphenoidal route. In this paper we report the case presenting TSH-oma and consecutive subacute thyroiditis.

To determine if subacute thyroiditis (SAT) is associated with changes in the regional perfusion of the thyroid gland, we performed Tc-99 m sestamibi scans on eleven patients with SAT who had painful goiter and clinical thyrotoxicosis. Eleven patients had Tc-99 m pertechnetate and Tc-99 m sestamibi scintigraphy during the acute stage of SAT. The thyroid uptake ratio of sestamibi was compared with the laboratory data and color Doppler ultrasonography. Tc-99 m pertechnetate scintigraphy in the thyroid was markedly reduced during the acute stage of SAT. Conversely, Tc-99 m sestamibi showed diffuse

INTRODUCTION: We report the preliminary results of a study on the importance of juxtajugular and supraisthmian lymph node enlargement at US as a sign of occult subacute thyroiditis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We examined patients submitted to thyroid US for noninflammatory thyroid conditions and for positive familiarity and studied the presence of supraisthmian and juxtajugular lymph node enlargement. The patients were then divided into two groups: the clinical history, antibody titer and symptoms were studied in group A (patients with enlarged lymph nodes) and the antibody titer, symptoms and US

A 34-year-old woman with chronic hepatitis C received interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) therapy. Her thyroid function was normal and thyroid autoantibodies were negative before treatment. Four months after the beginning of the therapy she presented a clinical course of thyroiditis with a transient thyrotoxicosis. The diagnosis of subacute thyroiditis was confirmed by laboratory, ultrasonography, radioiodine scanning and fine needle aspiration findings. Thyroid autoantibodies were persisting negative. She suspended IFN-alpha therapy and she started non steroidal anti-inflammatory agents and beta-blo
