A 20-year-old woman presented with a 1-month history of positional vertigo, occipital headaches, and progressive gait ataxia. Neuroimaging demonstrated a 3.7 × 4.2 × 3.3 cm heterogeneously enhancing mass in the left cerebellar hemisphere with fourth-ventricle compression, approximately 8 mm tonsillar herniation, and obstructive hydrocephalus. Urgent resection was performed through a midline suboccipital approach with neuronavigation and fluorescein guidance, achieving gross total removal. Histopathology showed an undifferentiated high-grade neuroepithelial malignancy with brisk mitotic activit

Follicular dentritic cell sarcomatous neoplasms originate from dendritic cells contained within the lymph nodes. In extranodal location, these neoplasms, are rare clinical entities, and even more so, their location in the head-neck region is extremely rare. Only 17 cases of primary dendritic cell sarcoma of the tonsil are reported in the literature at present. Being such a rare entity, histopathological diagnosis can be complex and requires great expertise and proper immunohistochemical analysis [1]. We present a case of a 48-year-old young man diagnosed with follicular dendritic cell sarcoma

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV)-positive tonsil cancer has a better prognosis than HPV-negative tonsil cancer. Deintensification strategies to reduce or avoid radiotherapy (RT) for patients with HPV-associated tonsil cancer have been suggested. This study investigated the treatment outcomes of patients with HPV-associated tonsil cancer and suggested RT deintensification strategies.
METHODS: A cohort of 374 patients with HPV-associated tonsil cancer treated with primary surgery or RT between 2008 and 2020 was retrospectively evaluated. Survival and locoregional control rates after prima

A 66-year-old man with a history of squamous cell carcinoma of the right tonsil presented to the emergency department with two life-threatening episodes of haemoptysis 9 months after completion of chemoradiation. He was evaluated to rule out recurrent malignancy, and was determined to have osteoradionecrosis of his hyoid bone that had led to an oropharyngeal fistula. Given the proximity to branches of the external carotid, he was offered tracheostomy and resection of the protruding necrotic bone with ultrasonic bone aspirator, which was placed down the shaft of the laryngoscope to minimise dam

Follicular lymphomas (FL) are among the most common non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) in adults. However, they are rare in children making up less than 3% of paediatric NHL cases. They occur most commonly in the head and neck region, lymph nodes or tonsils, with occasional extra-nodal occurrences. Distinction of FL from potentially clonal but, reactive follicular hyperplasia is important. We report a case of a 6-year-old male child presenting with night stridor since 6 months. Clinical examination revealed asymmetrical enlargement of the left tonsil. Routine left tonsillectomy was performed and the

We review a unique case of NUT midline carcinoma that presented in a young girl with an initial diagnosis of tonsillar abscess. We stress the importance of assaying poorly differentiated carcinomas in young patients for the t(15;19) translocation. Our patient presented with tonsillar enlargement and cervical lymphadenopathy mimicking acute tonsillitis. The clinical suspicion for malignancy arose after an aspirate from the tonsil did not yield any pus, and biopsy of a cervical lymph node demonstrated undifferentiated carcinoma. Further analysis by fluorescence in situ hybridization was positive

A 63-year-old woman with confusion and disorientation was referred to the Pulmonary Medicine Department of Afyon Kocatepe University. She was uncooperative and her peripheral oxygen saturation was 75%. She was on diuretic therapy for heart failure. An emergency intubation was planned due to the development of respiratory acidosis and hypoxemia, but the patient could not be intubated. After several attempts, intubation was successful only by digital manipulation of a lateral pharyngeal mass noticed incidentally. She was inadvertently extubated on the third day of intubation and an emergency tra

We describe a 49-year-old man who presented with a cervical mass of a week's evolution, which clinically mimicked a tumoral expansion. Physical examination showed a left cervical mass of 6 x 4 x 2 cm, associated to a left ulcerated tonsillar tumor. The presumptive diagnosis was a tonsillar cancer with lymph node involvement. An amygdalectomy and a frozen section biopsy of the cervical tumor were performed. The biopsy displayed a reactive lymphadenopathy with follicular and interfollicular hyperplasia rich in plasma cells, epithelioid areas, and an outstanding parcel fibrosis of subcapsular, in

UNLABELLED: Tonsillectomy is one of the most commonly performed procedures of the head and neck. It is performed for a wide variety of indications in both adults and children. It is common to send the material achieved in the surgery to routine histopathologic exam, as to analyze suspected material or for a medical-legal documentation.
OBJECTIVE: Analyze the utility and cost of routine histopathologic diagnosis for tonsillectomy.
METHODOLOGY: retrospective study of the histopathologic result of all tonsillectomies between 1978 and 2004 in a university hospital and analyzed the files of the p

We describe a case of a giant fibrovascular polyp arising from the oropharynx and causing vague clinical symptoms. To our knowledge, this is the first description of an oropharyngeal fibrovascular polyp reported in the medical literature. The diagnosis was based on MR imaging findings, which showed the size and configuration of the polyp as well as the site of attachment. The patient underwent surgery, and the diagnosis was confirmed histologically.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV)-positive tonsil and base of tongue (BOT) cancers have been considered together. However, important differences may exist.
METHODS: Demographic and tumor characteristics, and survival, were compared by oropharyngeal cancer subsite from 2004 to 2016 in the National Cancer Database (NCDB). Trends in tonsillectomy from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2014 were examined.
RESULTS: HPV-positive BOT (N = 13 081) were older than HPV-positive tonsil patients (N = 16 874; mean 61.5 vs. 58.4 years, p < 0.001), and individuals 70+

Canine non-tonsillar oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is generally regarded as locally invasive with low rates of metastasis. Two cases of canine non-tonsillar OSCC with occult tonsillar squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC) detected with tonsillar biopsies are reported. Tonsillar biopsies and detection of occult TSCC changed the therapeutic plan and may have contributed to long-term tumor control.

RATIONALE: Lung cancer has the highest mortality of all malignant tumors and is becoming the leading cause of death in China. Surgical resection is the best treatment for early non-small-cell lung carcinoma. But postoperative tumor recurrence is very common. Brain, bone and liver are the most common metastatic sites of lung cancer.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 59-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital finding a lung nodule in physical examination. No other obvious symptoms were obsessed in this patient. No remarkable abnormality was detected in preoperative laboratory tests and physical examinati

BACKGROUND: Ipsilateral radiotherapy is an established technique for treating well-lateralised tonsillar tumours. Concerns exist regarding the risk of contralateral nodal failure, particularly in patients with ipsilateral nodal involvement at presentation. In this study, we retrospectively reviewed the clinical outcomes of patients treated with ipsilateral radiotherapy aiming to identify factors that predispose to a higher risk of contralateral nodal recurrence.
METHODS: Retrospective case note review of all patients with tonsillar cancer who were treated using ipsilateral radiotherapy betwee
