Changes in oral cavity during period of intensive vomiting in patient with somatoform autonomic dysfunction - description of the case.

INTRODUCTION: The most important endogenous causes of erosion are eating disorders, gastro-oesophageal reflux (GERD), alcoholism and syndromes involving lowered saliva secretion. AIM: The aim of this work is to study a patient with symptoms of somatoform autonomic dysfunction, in which significant erosive loss occurred through chemical influence of gastric acid on oral cavity. METHODS: Seventeen years old girl was sent to Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry due to persistent nausea and vomiting, which occurred over a period of about 10 months. Because of this she was repeatedly adm

Aplasia of the parotid gland in Down syndrome.

Salivary gland aplasia has not to our knowledge been previously reported in association with Down syndrome. We present a case of bilateral parotid aplasia in a patient with Down syndrome. Clinically he had aplasia of the major salivary glands and symptoms of xerostomia. Thirteen other family members over three generations were examined, and all had functional parotid glands. We reviewed publications about Down syndrome and salivary aplasia, together with the data regarding his other clinical problems and family background. His oral problems were inadequate plaque control, dental caries, and er

Perimylolysis of the permanent dentition in an adolescent.

During a routine dental appointment at a dental school clinic, a fifteen-year-old black male patient was diagnosed with severe erosion of the dentition together with several carious lesions and a crowded dentition. During treatment of the carious lesions, severe erosion (perimylolysis) of the maxillary and mandibular teeth were observed, which at first alerted the attending clinician to a preliminary diagnosis of anorexia and/or bulimia. Because of the age, gender and social and medical history of the patient, these preliminary diagnoses were discounted, with a hypothesis of gastrointestinal d

Infiltration of salivary proteins into dentin during erosive processes.

OBJECTIVE: Ultrastructural analyses showed that during erosion under oral cavity conditions, dentin is infiltrated by a substrate morphologically similar to salivary proteins. This in-situ study aimed to investigate the presence of salivary proteins in demineralized dentin. METHODS: Bovine dentin specimens were attached to individual maxillary splints (n = 1 per subject and condition) and worn intraorally by four subjects for 1 min. During intraoral exposure, the subjects rinsed with 10 ml of either sterile water or 1 % citric acid. Additional specimens were eroded in-vitro as controls (n = 2

Drugs that promote dental caries.

Dental caries result from erosion of tooth enamel or cementum by acidic substances produced by bacteria found in dental plaque. Caries can lead to pulp necrosis and tooth loss. Risk factors include certain dietary habits, poor oral hygiene, and dry mouth. Diabetes and Sjogren's syndrome can also promote dental caries. Psychotropic substances such as cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and cannabis can promote dental caries. Many medicinal drugs facilitate the formation of dental caries, through various mechanisms; they include formulations with a high sugar content; drugs that cause dry mouth (es

Erosive hand osteoarthritis: latest findings and outlook.

Osteoarthritis (OA) most commonly affects knee joints, and the next most commonly affected sites are the hands and hips. Three distinct hand OA phenotypes have been described: erosive hand OA (EHOA), nodal hand OA - also known as non-erosive hand OA (non-EHOA) - and first carpometacarpal joint OA. EHOA predominantly affects women and is the most aggressive form of hand OA, characterized by a severe clinical onset and progression, leading to joint damage, disability and reduction of quality of life. Clinical signs of inflammation associated with EHOA include the acute onset of pain, swelling an

Thickness and nanomechanical properties of protective layer formed by TiF4 varnish on enamel after erosion.

The layer formed by fluoride compounds on tooth surface is important to protect the underlying enamel from erosion. However, there is no investigation into the properties of protective layer formed by NaF and TiF4 varnishes on eroded enamel. This study aimed to evaluate the thickness, topography, nanohardness, and elastic modulus of the protective layer formed by NaF and TiF4 varnishes on enamel after erosion using nanoindentation and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Human enamel specimens were sorted into control, NaF, and TiF4 varnish groups (n = 10). The initial nanohardness and elastic modul

Decreased levels of Cx43 gap junctions result in ameloblast dysregulation and enamel hypoplasia in Gja1Jrt/+ mice.

Coordinated differentiation of the ameloblast cell layer is essential to enamel matrix protein deposition and subsequent mineralization. It has been hypothesized that this process is governed by Cx43-based gap junctional intercellular communication as oculodentodigital dysplasia (ODDD) patients harboring autosomal-dominant mutations in Cx43 exhibit enamel defects typically resulting in early adulthood tooth loss. To assess the role of Cx43 in tooth development we employ a mouse model of ODDD that harbors a G60S Cx43 mutant, Gja1(Jrt)/+, and appears to exhibit tooth abnormalities that mimic the

Factors Influencing Tooth Sensitivity: Insights From the Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia Using Bootstrap-Enhanced Ordinal Regression.

Introduction Tooth sensitivity, or dentin hypersensitivity (DH), is characterized by sharp, sudden pain in response to stimuli such as cold, heat, sweet, or acidic foods and drinks. In Malaysia, there is limited understanding of the epidemiological aspects of tooth sensitivity, necessitating focused research. The condition results from the exposure of dentinal tubules transmitting stimuli to nerves within the pulp, with contributing factors including gingival recession, enamel erosion, and periodontal disease. This study aims to investigate the factors associated with tooth sensitivity among p

Interplay between experimental dental pellicles and stannous-containing toothpaste on dental erosion-abrasion.

The interaction between stannous-containing dentifrice slurry and experimentally formed pellicles was investigated on enamel and root dentin using an erosion-remineralization-abrasion cycling model. The remineralizing solutions contained no proteins (negative control), mucin, casein, mucin + casein or albumin, for experimental pellicle formation. Toothbrushing was performed with fluoride toothpaste, with (TP + Sn) and without (TP) 3,500 ppm Sn. TP + Sn reduced surface loss for both enamel and root dentin (p < 0.05). The association between TP + Sn and albumin resulted in a significantly lower

[Phytosphingosine, a new ingredient for oral care products?].

Despite the availability of a wide range of (fluoridated) oral care products, there is a constant search under way for new substances that contribute to a healthy mouth. Laboratory research shows that the lipid phytosphingosine forms a molecular layer on hydroxyapatite and protects it against acid-induced demineralization and bacterial adhesion. In the future, phytosphingosine may be used in the future as a new ingredient in oral care products for the prevention of tooth erosion and biofilm-related disorders, such as caries, gingivitis and periodontitis.
