Long-term tooth loss in periodontally compromised but treated patients according to the type of prosthodontic treatment. A retrospective study.

If prosthodontic treatment is considered after periodontal therapy, the questions arise i) does prosthodontic treatment affect the treatment outcome of the dentition in general and ii) which type of prosthesis is related to best treatment outcome of abutment teeth? Our goal was to compare long-term tooth loss after comprehensive periodontal therapy in patients with or without prosthodontic treatment. Ninety patients' charts with a total of 1937 teeth who had received comprehensive periodontal treatment 5-17 years ago by the same periodontist were retrospectively evaluated. Sixty-five patients …

Analysis of cathepsin-K activity at tooth and dental implant sites and the potential of this enzyme in reflecting alveolar bone loss.

BACKGROUND: Cathepsin-K is an enzyme involved in bone metabolism which may make this feature important for both natural teeth and dental implants. The aims of the present study are to comparatively analyze the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF)/peri-implant sulcus fluid (PISF) cathepsin-K levels of natural teeth and dental implants, and to assess the potential relationship between this biochemical parameter and alveolar bone loss around natural teeth and dental implants. METHODS: Probing depth, bleeding on probing, gingival index, and plaque index clinical parameters were assessed, and GCF/PISF

The influence of thyroid hormones on periodontitis-related bone loss and tooth-supporting alveolar bone: a histological study in rats.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Recent studies have pointed to potentially periodontal risk indicators, however no information is available on the impact of changes in thyroid hormone levels on the progression of periodontitis and on the quality of alveolar bone. Thus, the aim of the present study was to evaluate histologically, in rats, the influence of thyroid hormones on the rate of periodontal bone loss resulting from ligature placement and on the quality of tooth-supporting alveolar bone. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty-six male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to the following groups: healthy

Pre-Deployment Audit of Actionability and Equity in Severe Tooth Loss Prediction Using Constrained Algorithmic Recourse and Temporal Validation.

BACKGROUND: Predictive performance does not establish whether model-identified risks correspond to feasible, equitable pathways. We assessed the actionability and equity of a severe tooth loss prediction model using constrained algorithmic recourse and same-source temporal validation. METHODS: An Explainable Boosting Machine was trained using 2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data from 433,772 adults. High-risk adults underwent recourse auditing incorporating immutability locks, behavioral directionality, physiological safety floors, and at most three feature changes. Recourse r…

From Virtual Maxillomandibular Relationship Determination to Clinical Implementation for Digital Functional-Esthetic Rehabilitation in Severe Generalised Tooth Surface Loss.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to present a digital workflow to resolve functional-esthetic conflicts in severe generalised tooth surface loss (TSL). CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS: Key challenges in TSL involved compromised structural integrity of the dentition, necessitating precise occlusal rehabilitation to achieve a stable mandibular position and occlusion. The virtual patient-derived protocol introduced two technical advancements: (1) maxillomandibular relationship (MMR) determination through jaw kinematics capture, and (2) dynamic anterior guidance optimization via jaw motion track

Risk Factors for Tooth Loss in Patients with ≥25 Remaining Teeth Undergoing Mid-Long-Term Maintenance: A Retrospective Study.

Tooth loss represents a diffused pathologic condition affecting the worldwide population. Risk factors have been identified in both general features (smoking, diabetes, economic status) and local tooth-related factors (caries, periodontitis). In this retrospective study, we examined the data of 366 patients with a large number of remaining teeth (≥25) undergoing maintenance therapy in order to identify specific risk factors for tooth loss. The number of remaining teeth, number of non-vital teeth, and number of occlusal units were investigated for their correlation with tooth loss. The mean fol…

Decision-making deficits associated with disrupted synchronization between basolateral amygdala and anterior cingulate cortex in rats after tooth loss.

Human studies have shown that multiple teeth loss was significantly associated with cognitive impairment, dementia and Alzheimer's disease. However, the causal relationship between tooth loss and cognitive deficits has not been clarified. Rodents demonstrate human-like cognitive faculties. In this study by performing rat gambling task (RGT), we reported that prolonged tooth loss condition by extracting all left molars in the rats led to an increase in the proportion of poor decision-makers, and decrease in the proportion of good decision-makers compared with controls. No influence was detected…

Behavioral responses to tooth loss in wild ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta) at the Beza Mahafaly Special Reserve, Madagascar.

Severe dental wear and tooth loss is often assumed to impede the processing, breakdown, and energetic conversion of food items, thereby negatively impacting individual health, reproduction, and survival. Ring-tailed lemurs at the Beza Mahafaly Special Reserve demonstrate exceptionally high frequencies of severe dental wear and antemortem tooth loss, yet often survive multiple years with these impairments. To test the hypothesis that these lemurs mitigate tooth loss through behavioral adjustments, we collected 191 h of observational data from 16 focal subjects, eight without tooth loss and eigh…

Link between tooth loss and health expectancy: findings from a prospective Singaporean population-based cohort study of older adults.

BACKGROUND: We evaluated the impact of the number of teeth on health expectancy, measured as years of life without limitations in activities of daily living (ADLs) and physical function, among adults aged ≥60 years. METHODS: Data from 3384 older adults in a nationally representative longitudinal study in Singapore were analysed. Health expectancy was estimated using an inverse probability-weighted multistate life table approach with microsimulation. Number of teeth (time-varying) was the exposure, and baseline removable dental prostheses use was the modifier. RESULTS: Among older adults with

Association between tooth loss and kidney function: indirect roles of oxidative stress and systemic inflammation in NHANES 2001-2020.

BACKGROUND: Tooth loss and chronic kidney disease (CKD) are globally prevalent conditions with substantial impacts on overall health. Previous evidence suggests an association between tooth loss and CKD, but its characteristics and potential biological pathways remain unclear. This study examined the association between tooth loss and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR)-related CKD and explored potential indirect associations of systemic oxidative stress, quantified by the oxidative balance score (OBS), and the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII). METHODS: We conducted a cross-se…

Tooth Loss as a Risk Factor of Declining Intrinsic Capacity Domains in Later Life: Evidence From NHANES 2009-2014.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization (WHO) defined intrinsic capacity (IC) as the combination of physical and mental resources essential for healthy aging. Currently, the role of oral health in relation to IC remains underexplored. OBJECTIVES: To examine the associations among the number of remaining teeth and IC domains. METHODS: From the 30 468 subjects of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2009-2014, we included 787 participants aged ≥ 60 years with available dental/IC-related data, representing a weighted population of approximately 8.35 million U.S. older

Tooth Loss, Nutrition, and Oral Health-Related Quality of Life in Older Adults: Evidence from a Structural Equation Model.

BACKGROUND: Oral health problems, particularly tooth loss, may impair nutrition and reduce oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in older adults. However, the pathways linking these conditions remain unclear. METHODS: We analyzed data from 112 older adults (≥60 years). We measured OHRQoL using the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI) and nutritional status using the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), and used tooth loss as a clinical indicator. Bivariate analyses used Spearman's correlation, and structural equation modeling (SEM) with robust estimation was applied to assess d…

Association between tooth loss rate and risk of mild cognitive impairment in older adults: a population-based longitudinal study.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a symptomatic predementia phase of the trajectory of cognitive decline, and its prevalence increases with age. Although the relationship between oral health and MCI have been explored previously, it is uncertain whether individuals with different tooth loss rates have altered MCI risks. We hereby conducted a longitudinal study by using data from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey to investigate the association. Tooth loss rate was defined as the difference of teeth between two interview waves divided by years of interval; participants were then…
