The authors recommend the only type of movement of the toothbrush: along the vertical axis of the tooth with the maximal involvement of the gingival mucosa. The duration of the process depends not on its time, but on the number of the cleaning movements made. Twenty paired movements with the toothbrush are sufficient to remove completely the bacterial coating of the incisors, 25 movements to make so for the canines and premolars, and 30 movements for the molars. Use of this mode of tooth-brushing by subjects of various age groups has demonstrated its high efficacy for the prevention of dental

BACKGROUND: Mechanical tongue cleaning may be an effective method for decreasing oral levels of volatile sulfur compounds, or VSC, and oral malodor. The authors conducted a study to compare the effectiveness of a specially designed tongue cleaner (One Drop Only Tongue Cleaner, One Drop Only, Berlin), a tongue scraper and a toothbrush in reducing oral VSC levels.
METHODS: In this balanced, crossover study, 30 subjects had four morning appointments each with a waiting period of one week between appointments. At each appointment, a dental professional performed a single standardized tongue clean

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effects of radiofrequency (RF) energy, applied through a power toothbrush, on the structural morphology of dental plaque and its bacteria components. Previous studies showed that a toothbrush powered by RF (ToothWave) effectively reduces extrinsic tooth stains, plaque, and calculus. However, the mechanism by which it reduces dental plaque deposits is not fully established.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Multispecies plaques at sampling time points of 24, 48, and 72 hours were treated with the application of RF using ToothWave with the toothbrush bristles 1 mm above the

BACKGROUND: Halitosis is used to describe any disagreeable odour of expired air regardless of its origin. Mouthwashes which disguise oral malodor are more socially acceptable and generally more popular than tongue scrapers.
OBJECTIVES: To provide reliable evidence regarding the effectiveness of tongue scraping versus other interventions (including mouthwashes) to control halitosis.
SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the following databases: Cochrane Oral Health Group Trials Register (to 15th September 2005); the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (The Cochrane Library, Issue 3 2005); M

BACKGROUND: Periodontal (gum) disease and dental caries (tooth decay) are the most common causes of tooth loss; dental plaque plays a major role in the development of these diseases. Effective oral hygiene involves removing dental plaque, for example, by regular toothbrushing. People with intellectual disabilities (ID) can have poor oral hygiene and oral health outcomes.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects (benefits and harms) of oral hygiene interventions, specifically the mechanical removal of plaque, for people with intellectual disabilities (ID).

BACKGROUND: The presence of dental caries impacts on children's daily lives, particularly among those living in deprived areas. There are successful interventions across the United Kingdom for young children based on toothbrushing with fluoride toothpaste. However, evidence is lacking for oral health improvement programmes in secondary-school pupils to reduce dental caries and its sequelae.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the clinical and cost effectiveness of a behaviour change intervention promoting toothbrushing for preventing dental caries in secondary-school pupils.
DESIGN: A multicentre, scho…

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have reported an association between toothbrushing frequency and systemic health. Plaque control, achieved through frequent brushing, is known to prevent dental caries and periodontal disease, potentially reducing the risk of systemic diseases. However, individuals with good oral health behaviours may also exhibit healthier lifestyle habits which could impact systemic health. In examining the relationship between oral health behaviours and systemic health, it is important to consider the influence of factors that mediate the relationship between them. This study cond…

BACKGROUND: This study explores the perceptions of nursing students specializing in geriatrics when performing toothbrushing for dependent older adults. It aims to highlight the emotional and technical responses associated with this care activity, which is often underestimated in clinical practice, and to emphasize its importance for the overall health and quality of life of older people.
METHODS: A descriptive qualitative design was adopted. Thirty-four nursing students participated in a pedagogical exercise integrated into the geriatrics module. After performing toothbrushing on an older ad…

A previous clinical screening study demonstrated that a cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) essential oil mouthrinse inhibited plaque regrowth to a significantly greater extent than a negative control or a triclosan/copolymer rinse when used without toothbrushing. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the same ingredient combination as a pre-brushing rinse over a 6-week period. The study employed a 4 group parallel design with a minimum of 50 subjects per group. Subjects with a minimum baseline plaque index of 1.95 were recruited. The formulations employed were two variations of a CPC/essential…

BACKGROUND: Effective self-performed oral hygiene is fundamental to the prevention and control of dental biofilm-induced gingivitis. While reinforcement strategies and behavioural interventions (including technologies/digital adjuncts) may improve adherence, advances in oral hygiene devices may enhance the mechanical efficacy of plaque removal. This systematic review evaluated the effects of (1) enhanced oral hygiene instruction, (2) behavioural/motivational/technology interventions and (3) oral hygiene devices on gingival inflammation in adults with gingivitis.

The occurrence of gingival recession was investigated in adults by age and gender and in relation to their dental status and frequency of toothbrushing. A total of 258 dentate subjects were clinically examined. Their mean age was 46 years and they had an average of 19.4 natural teeth. Gingival recession was recorded as present if any root surface was clearly visible without retraction of the gingival tissue. Recession was found on at least one tooth surface in 68% of subjects. Mean number of surfaces with recession was 7.2 for women and 10.4 for men. Subjects with gingival recession had fewer …

BACKGROUND: Mechanical tongue cleaning is an important oral hygiene procedure; it is known that a significant cause of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), a major component of bad breath, is due to the bacteria coating the tongue. This study was conducted to identify the effect of mechanical tongue cleaning on reducing bad breath and tongue coating.
METHODS: Various mechanical tongue-cleaning methods were studied, including removing tongue coating using a toothbrush, removing tongue coating using a tongue scraper, and removing tongue coating using a toothbrush and a tongue scraper together. The
