Geographical variations in cardiovascular disease rates have been linked to individual air pollutants. Investigating the relation between cardiovascular disease and exposure to a complex mixture of air pollutants requires holistic approaches. We assessed the relationship between exposure to multiple air pollutants and the incidence of coronary heart disease (CHD) in a general population sample. We collected data in the Lille MONICA registry (2008-2011) on 3268 incident cases (age range: 35-74). Based on 20 indicators, we derived a composite environmental score (SEnv) for cumulative exposure to

Examining the validity of exposure metrics used in air pollution epidemiologic models has been a key focus of recent exposure assessment studies. The objective of this work has been, largely, to determine what a given exposure metric represents and to quantify and reduce any potential errors resulting from using these metrics in lieu of true exposure measurements. The current manuscript summarizes the presentations of the co-authors from a recent EPA workshop, held in December 2006, dealing with the role and contributions of exposure assessment in addressing these issues. Results are presented

Health vulnerability assessments are essential in countries with high pollutant exposure, such as Indonesia. The main objective of this study is to construct a health vulnerability index (HVI) related to air pollution and climate condition and analyze its spatial relationship with industrial activity and traffic congestion using large-scale geospatial data. The study utilized secondary data from satellite images, official statistics, and OpenStreetMap. The index was developed through principal component analysis (PCA), followed by spatial regression to assess its association with the industria

The rapid development in Beijing, the capital of China, has resulted in serious air pollution problems. Meanwhile great efforts have been made to improve the air quality, especially since 1998. The variation in air quality under the interaction of pollution and control in this mega city has attracted much attention. We analyzed the changes in ambient air quality in Beijing since the 1980's using the Daniel trend test based on data from long-term monitoring stations. The results showed that different pollutants displayed three trends: a decreasing trend, an increasing trend and a flat trend. SO

OBJECTIVE: We previously reported that total suspended particulates exposure (a measure of air pollution) at the time of birth was related to increased postmenopausal breast cancer risk. In this study, we examined breast cancer risk in relation to exposure to air pollution from traffic emissions throughout life.
METHODS: We conducted a case-control study of breast cancer. Participants were women, aged 35-79, residents of Erie and Niagara Counties. Cases had incident, primary, histologically confirmed breast cancer. Controls were randomly selected from the population, frequency-matched on age

The presence of pollutants in the earth's atmosphere has a direct impact on human health and the environment. So that pollutants such as carbon monoxide (CO) and particulate matter (PM) cause respiratory diseases, cough headache, etc. Since the amount of pollutants in the air is related to environmental and urban factors, the aim of the current research is to investigate the relationship between the concentration of CO, PM2.5 and PM10 with urban-environmental factors including land use, wind speed and wind direction, topography, traffic, road network, and population through a Land use regressi

BACKGROUND: Transport-related air and noise pollution, exposures linked to adverse health outcomes, varies within cities potentially resulting in exposure inequalities. Relatively little is known regarding inequalities in personal exposure to air pollution or transport-related noise.
OBJECTIVES: Our objectives were to quantify socioeconomic and ethnic inequalities in London in 1) air pollution exposure at residence compared to personal exposure; and 2) transport-related noise at residence from different sources.
METHODS: We used individual-level data from the London Travel Demand Survey (n =

Non-exhaust emissions are rapidly emerging as a major contributor to traffic-related particulate pollution, yet their emission patterns and impacts remain poorly constrained at large spatial scales. Here we present a nationwide, road-network-resolved assessment of tire and road wear particles (TRWP), integrating harmonized field measurements, machine-learning models, traffic activity data, and epidemiological models. China's road network emitted 425 kt of TRWP-derived fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in 2023, nearly 80% originating from modeled vehicle-induced resuspension. These emissions and

BACKGROUND: Air pollution has many negative health effects on the general population, especially children, subjects with underlying chronic disease and the elderly. The aims of this study were to evaluate the effects of traffic-related pollution on the exacerbation of asthma and development of respiratory infections in Italian children suffering from asthma or wheezing compared with healthy subjects and to estimate the association between incremental increases in principal pollutants and the incidence of respiratory symptoms.
METHODS: This prospective study enrolled 777 children aged 2 to 18 …

Road traffic accidents are a pervasive feature of everyday life, killing 36,500 people, injuring 4.5 million and, overall, generating costs to the American society of $340 billion in 2019. Understanding the underlying factors can improve the design of prevention strategies. We use all road traffic collisions in New York City between 2013 and 2021 (N = 1,269,600) and match each individual collision to the nearest weather and air pollution station. Our study uses highly disaggregated data using an hourly frequency of collisions at a fine spatial level incorporating various air pollutants and wea

The short term vulnerability of sections of the population to the harmful effects of chemical pollutants in the urban atmosphere represents an important unresolved problem of public health. These groups include young children, the elderly, asthmatic patients, and patients with chronic bronchitis and cardio-respiratory insufficiency. A recently ratified French law on air and rational energy use is aimed at resolving this problem in the context of recognizing that everybody has a right to breathe air which is not damaging to their health. In order to achieve this objective and direct the measure

INTRODUCTION: Air pollution is a worldwide problem affecting human health via various body systems, resulting in numerous significant adverse events. Air pollutants, including particulate matter < or = 2.5 microns (PM2.5), particulate matter < or = 10 microns (PM10), ozone (O3 ), nitrogen dioxide (NO2 ), and traffic-related air pollution (TRAP), have demonstrated the negative effects on human health (e.g., increased cerebrovascular, cardiovascular, and respiratory diseases, malignancy, and mortality). Organ transplant patients, who are taking immunosuppressive agents, are especially vulnerable

Mixing ratios of atmospheric ammonia (NH3), nitric oxide (NO), carbon monoxide (CO), nonmethane hydrocarbons (NMHCs), and methane (CH4) were measured to investigate the vehicular emissions, which are a dominant source of atmospheric NH3 in urban sites of Delhi, India from January 2013 to December 2014. The annual average mixing ratios of NH3, NO, CO, NMHCs, and CH4 were 21.2 ± 2.1 ppb, 21.2 ± 6.1 ppb, 1.89 ± 0.18 ppm, 0.67 ± 0.21 ppm and 3.11 ± 0.53 ppm, respectively. Considering NO as a tracer of vehicular plume, ambient NH3 was correlated with NO during peak traffic hour in the morning (7:00

Air pollution is responsible for more than 9 million premature deaths a year, including 48,000 in France. Fine particles (PM2.5), derived mainly from urban traffic, penetrate deeply into the lungs and trigger oxidative stress and inflammation, their key mechanisms of toxicity. They contribute to cardiorespiratory and systemic damage, increasing the risk of asthma attacks, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbations, and respiratory infections. It is therefore essential, using experimental models, to decipher the mechanisms underlying these infection-related vulnerabilities, the

High-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) is an effective non-pharmacological tool for improving physiological responses related to health. When HIIE is performed in urban centers, however, the exerciser is exposed to traffic-related air pollution (TRAP), which is associated with metabolic, anti-inflammatory imbalance and cardiovascular diseases. This paradoxical combination has the potential for conflicting health effects. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the effects of HIIE performed in TRAP exposure on serum cytokines, non-target metabolomics and cardiovascular parameters. Fifteen

Leukemia is the most frequent malignant disease affecting children. To date, the etiology of childhood leukemia remains largely unknown. Few risk factors (genetic susceptibility, infections, ionizing radiation, etc.) have been clearly identified, but they appear to explain only a small proportion of cases. Considerably more uncertain is the role of other environmental risk factors, such as indoor and outdoor air pollution. We sought to summarize and quantify the association between traffic-related air pollution and risk of childhood leukemia, and further examined results according to method of

This study investigates long-term air quality variability in Dhaka, Bangladesh, across pre-lockdown, lockdown, and post-lockdown phases of the COVID-19 pandemic (2017-2023). Unlike prior pollutant-specific or satellite-based analysis, this work integrates ground-based pollutant records with meteorological datasets to extricate anthropogenic influences from climatic variability. A methodological framework combining meteorological adjustment with multiple linear regression (MLR) modeling was applied to evaluate the relative effects of traffic activity and atmospheric conditions on major urban po

While air quality is usually an environmental condition patients can little do about, there are a few options and decisions that modify the personal exposure and risk. Location - in particular the residence - time and activity are the key determinants of personal exposure. Traffic-related primary pollutants such as ultrafine particles or diesel soot are highly concentrated along busy roads but reach urban background concentrations already some 100 - 200 meters off. Morbidity and mortality follow this spatial pattern, which is usually attributed to these pollutants. Depending on ventilation sys
