Real-time in vivo assessment of the nerve microenvironment with coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering microscopy.

BACKGROUND: Current analysis of nerve injury and repair relies largely on electrophysiologic and ex vivo histologic techniques. In vivo architectural assessment of a nerve without removal or destruction of the tissue would greatly assist in the grading of nerve injury and in the monitoring of nerve regeneration over time. Coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering microscopy is an optical process with particular sensitivity for high-lipid-containing molecules such as myelin. This in vivo nonthermal technique offers high-resolution images that the authors aim to evaluate in both normal and injured n

Frequency of radiculopathies in motor vehicle accidents.

This retrospective study compared the frequency of electrodiagnostically confirmed cervical and lumbar radiculopathies in a motor vehicle accident (MVA) population to that of a non-MVA population in 24,651 consecutive initial electrodiagnostic reports. The frequency of cervical radiculopathy was slightly but significantly increased in 8% of the MVA compared to 6% of the non-MVA patients. The frequency of plexopathy was significantly increased in the MVA (3%) compared to the non-MVA patients (2%). The frequency of lumbar radiculopathy was not significantly increased (12% for both groups). Ninet

[Peripheral neuropathy caused by incongruous posture in shoe manufacture workers].

Nine cases of local neuropathy are described in shoe-manufacture workers. Clinical and electrophysiological examination excluded diseases such as toxic polyneuropathies due to n-hexane. Specific lesions of the ulnar nerve were located near the elbow where the forced and uncomfortable posture facilitated the compression of the nerve in the cubital tunnel. The severity of the neuropathies ranged from relatively slight, with paresthesia of some of the fingers, to evident hypotrophy of the inter-osseous muscles of the hand. All the 9 cases sewed shoe uppers using sewing machines operating 25 cm ab

Scapular notch resection for suprascapular nerve decompression in 12 horses.

Supraspinatus and infraspinatus muscle paralysis with atrophy was treated by partial osteotomy of the scapula, deep to the suprascapular nerve. The horses had various gait abnormalities, which were corrected by the surgery, but regeneration of the muscles varied from partial to complete, depending on the duration of the condition and the degree of atrophy before surgery.

[Differential diagnostic aspects of forensically relevant findings in the brain stem].

Because of the extreme dense accumulation of vital structures (compared with other regions of the central nervous system), in the brainstem even small lesions may cause serious clinical symptoms. Judging the forensic relevance of macroscopically visible lesions requires the knowledge of the respective possible diagnosis. As shown in three case reports (67 years, teleangiectasis; 35 years, cavernoma; 49 years, secondary hemorrhage following trauma) this demands apart from the knowledge of the normal and pathological anatomy of the brainstem always the use of histological methods.

Autoimmune Autonomic Dysfunction Syndromes: Potential Involvement and Pathophysiology Related to Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Silicone Breast Implant-Related Symptoms and Post-COVID Syndrome.

The pathophysiological mechanisms involved in chronic disorders such as complex regional pain syndrome, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, silicone breast implant-related symptoms, and post-COVID syndrome have not been clearly defined. The course of the pain in some of the syndromes, the absence of evident tissue damage, and the predominance of alterations in the autonomic nervous system are shared similarities between them. The production of autoantibodies following a trigger in the syndromes was previously described, for instance, trauma in complex regional pain syndrome, infectious age

Presentation, etiology, diagnosis, and management of camptocormia.

Camptocormia (bent spine syndrome, cyphose hystérique) is an abnormality characterized by severe forward flexion of the thoracolumbar spine which typically increases during walking or standing and completely disappears in supine position. Camptocormia can be due to central nervous system diseases, such as Parkinson's disease, dystonia, multisystem atrophy, or Alzheimer's disease, due to peripheral nervous system diseases, such as primary myopathy, secondary myopathy, motor neuron disease, myasthenia, or chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, due to side effects of drug treatment, d

Occult craniocervical dissociation on cervical CT: an under-appreciated presentation of craniocervical trauma requiring occipital cervical fusion.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Craniocervical dissociation is a rare and life-threatening injury that results from a significant hyperflexion-hyperextension force. Occult craniocervical dissociation is defined as an unstable craniocervical injury in the absence of atlanto-occipital joint space widening or other skull base line abnormality. The early and accurate diagnosis of craniocervical dissociation is crucial since the early diagnosis and subsequent stabilization with occipital-cervical fusion has been shown to reduce neurologic morbidity and mortality. Several normative skull base lines have bee

Neuro-ophthalmic deficits after head trauma.

Head trauma can injure the afferent and/or efferent visual systems, resulting in neuro-ophthalmic deficits. When assessing afferent pathway injuries, a stepwise approach to evaluating visual acuity, pupils, color perception, and visual fields is critical. Traumatic optic neuropathy is of especial importance and its management must be tailored on a case-by-case basis. Efferent pathway injuries should be assessed with attention to abnormalities of ocular alignment and motility, which may occur as isolated deficits or as part of a recognizable syndrome. Concussion or diffuse axonal injuries may a

[Dynamics of neural connection remodeling in rat superior cervical ganglion after dosated preganglionic trunk compression].

The objective of this study was to obtain a quantitative characteristic of posttraumatic regeneration of neural connections in the superior cervical ganglion (SCG) using the ratio of ganglionic neurons (N) to preganglionic myelinated axons (A) in the cervical sympathetic trunk (N/A) as an index of this process. Light and electron microscopy methods were used to study albino male rats which were divided into three groups: intact animals (7 months-old), age control group (19 months-old animals) and experimental group (1 year after compression of sympathetic trunk at SCG base made at the age of 7

Spatiotemporal Expression of Poly(rC)-Binding Protein PCBP2 Modulates Schwann Cell Proliferation After Sciatic Nerve Injury.

Poly(C)-binding proteins (PCBPs), also known as RNA-binding proteins, interact in a sequence-specific fashion with single-stranded poly(C). It was reported that PCBP2 contributed to gastric cancer proliferation and survival through miR-34a, and knockdown of PCBP2 inhibited glioma proliferation through inhibition of cell cycle progression. In addition, PCBP2 might play a critical role in the regulation of cortical neurons apoptosis induced by hypoxia or ischemia. Because of the essential role of PCBP2 in nervous system and cell growth, we investigated the spatiotemporal expression of PCBP2 in a

Human nasal olfactory epithelium as a dynamic marker for CNS therapy development.

Discovery of new central nervous system (CNS) acting therapeutics has been slowed down by the lack of useful applicable biomarkers of disease or drug action often due to inaccessibility of relevant human CNS tissue and cell types. In recent years, non-neuronal cells, such as astrocytes, have been reported to play a highly significant role in neurodegenerative diseases, CNS trauma, as well as psychiatric disease and have become a target for small molecule and biologic therapies. We report the development of a method for measuring pharmacodynamic changes induced by potential CNS therapeutics usi

Dynamic changes of ICAM-1 expression in peripheral nervous system following sciatic nerve injury.

The injuries of the peripheral nerve are the results of trauma, disease, and surgical procedures that require section of peripheral nerves to gain access to the surgical site. Unlike elements of the central nervous system, peripheral nerves can regenerate when damaged. Recent studies provide evidence that intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) is involved not only in inflammation, but also in cell recruitment during Wallerian degeneration after peripheral nerve injury. In our studies, two different injury models (crush and transect) for peripheral nerve regeneration were used. We investiga
