Exploring nurses' experiences of the presence of a wound care specialist: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Wound care is a critical aspect of nursing practice, yet nurses often face challenges related to limited knowledge, lack of structured training, and insufficient organizational support. The integration of specialist wound care nurses has been suggested to enhance clinical outcomes, continuity of care, and professional competence among nursing staff. This study aimed to explore nurses' experiences with a specialist wound care nurse in a hospital setting and to identify the impact of this role on clinical practice and team performance. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive-exploratory

From Damage Control Resuscitation to Prolonged Care in Ukraine: Evolution of a Small Unit Training Program, 2023-2025.

INTRODUCTION: Following the immediate application of the principles of Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC), Damage Control Resuscitation (DCR) is central to reducing preventable death in large-scale combat operations (LSCO), particularly where evacuation to damage control surgical capability is delayed. Beginning in 2023, the College of Remote and Offshore Medicine (CoROM) and Tactical Medicine North (TacMed North) implemented the Damage Control Resuscitation Ukraine (DCR-U) course to upskill Ukrainian frontline medics across the continuum from point of injury through prolonged casualty care

Optimizing acute pain management in trauma care: the role, structure and core principles of acute trauma pain services.

Trauma injuries, both accidental and violence-related, account for a significant number of fatalities and non-fatal injuries annually, with pain being a predominant symptom affecting trauma patients. Despite its prevalence, pain is often undertreated in emergency settings, leading to adverse outcomes such as delayed recovery, impaired respiratory function, and increased risk of chronic pain and post-traumatic stress disorder. An Acute Trauma Pain Service (ATPS) is designed to address these issues through a multidisciplinary approach, involving anesthesiologists, pain nurses, and trauma special

Limited implementation of measures to reduce nosocomial spread of COVID-19 in hip-fracture patients in the North West of England.

Hip-fracture patients are vulnerable to the outcomes of COVID-19. We performed a cross-sectional survey to determine measures employed to limit nosocomial spread of COVID-19 in 23 orthopaedic trauma departments in the North-West of England. Nineteen (87%) hospitals admitted patients to a ward prior to a negative swab, and only 9 (39%) patients were barrier nursed. Hip-fracture patients were operated in non-COVID-19-free theatres in 21 (91%) hospitals. Regular screening of doctors working in trauma and elective areas for COVID-19 was undertaken in three (13%) and five (22%) hospitals, respectiv

Abusive head trauma: a case study.

Abusive head trauma (AHT) has greater mortality and morbidity than any other form of physical abuse. Therefore, early recognition and accurate diagnosis are essential for comprehensive investigation and appropriate treatment of infants who present with this devastating traumatic injury. Advanced practice nurses need to have a thorough understanding of AHT in order to promptly and accurately assess and manage these infants. Using a case-based approach, the epidemiology, pathophysiology, mechanisms of injury, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of AHT are described. This article also

"Barefoot and bleeding": Emergency nurses' experiences caring for Palestinian working children presenting to emergency departments in the West Bank-A qualitative descriptive study.

INTRODUCTION: Hazardous child labor is an important cause of preventable injury requiring emergency care. In the occupied West Bank, children as young as 11 work in agricultural settlements under hazardous conditions beyond Palestinian labor law enforcement. Emergency nurses are often the first healthcare professionals to assess these injuries, identify safeguarding concerns, and initiate care, yet their experiences remain absent from the literature. METHODS: This qualitative descriptive study employed semi-structured interviews with 19 emergency nurses purposively recruited from six hospital

Using PEACE to target helmet legislation involving nonmotorized wheeled sports in Canada.

Current Canadian helmet bylaws focus mainly on bicycle helmet use. In this way, law makers are ignoring head injuries associated with other wheeled sports. Cycling, in-line skating, skateboarding, and scootering can all cause serious injury to participants if proper protective gear is not worn. Legislation has been shown to work in promoting helmet use and decreasing injuries. Nurses, using theory and research to guide practice, can be key players in advocating for healthy public policies and amendments to provincial legislation. Nurses have the opportunity to play an active leadership role th

Compassion fatigue among nurses in neonatal intensive care units.

BACKGROUND: Nurses in the neonatal intensive care units face continuous emotional demands as they care for critically ill infants and support distressed families. Repeated exposure to trauma and parental grief can lead to compassion fatigue - a state of emotional exhaustion that reduces the ability to empathize. The purpose of the study was to explore how nurses experience compassion fatigue while working in neonatal intensive care units. METHODS: Qualitative, exploratory design. Eleven individual interviews with nurses and nurse specialists were conducted in August and September in 2023, at

Acute lower limb ischemia: a case study.

Acute ischemia of the lower extremity is a limb and life-threatening situation that demands prompt recognition and immediate treatment. The leading cause of acute limb ischemia is typically an arterial embolus of cardiac origin. Other significant causes are thrombosis of an atherosclerotic vessel and arterial injury/trauma. This case study examines complexities of diagnosis and treatment of acute ischemia while focusing on nursing care of a patient with an acute embolic occlusion.

The Use of Ultrasonography in the Emergency Department to Screen Patients After Blunt and Penetrating Trauma: A Clinical Update for the Advanced Practice Provider.

Use of bedside ultrasonography to identify life-threatening injuries for patients with blunt and penetrating trauma is the standard of care in the emergency department. The "FAST" examination-focused assessment with sonography for trauma-ultrasound scan of the chest and abdomen allows clinicians to assess critical regions for free fluid without use of invasive procedures as quickly and as often as needed. In addition, ultrasonography has a high degree of sensitivity and specificity and is safe during pregnancy. For patients requiring evaluation of the pleura, the "eFAST" (or extended FAST) may

[Nursing Accountability in Protecting Children and Adolescents at Risk of Depression or Suicide: From Campus to Medical Care].

Ensuring the holistic health of children and adolescents is a responsibility shared by families and society. In recent years, protection issues related to children and adolescents have garnered increasing public attention due to several major social incidents such as abuse, assault, school bullying, and filicide-suicide. These concerns necessitate the implementation of collective prevention efforts. Clinical healthcare professionals and frontline community nurses serve as guardians of holistic health, and their ability to remain vigilant, identify risks early, and provide timely referrals or i

'They all stay with me'-An interpretive phenomenological analysis on nurses' experiences resuscitating children in community hospital emergency departments.

AIM: To understand the lived experiences of nurses resuscitating children in community hospital emergency departments. BACKGROUND: Emergency department nurses exposed to paediatric resuscitations are at a high risk of developing post-traumatic stress. This may be especially true in community hospital emergency departments, where nurses have less exposure to, knowledge about, and resources for managing these events. Interventions to proactively prevent nurse trauma in these contexts remain largely uninvestigated. To inform such interventions, a detailed understanding of the largely unknown liv
