Ulnar nerve compression at the elbow (UNE) frequently affects people of working age. Surgically treated patients may not immediately return to work (RTW) postoperatively. In 2008, the Swedish Social Insurance Agency reformed the national insurance policy. We aimed to examine RTW postoperatively for UNE, variations among surgical methods, and potential risk factors for prolonged RTW (sick leave > 6 weeks). Surgically treated cases of UNE (n = 635) from two time periods (2004-2008 and 2009-2014) and two healthcare regions (Southern and South-eastern) were studied retrospectively regarding age, s

A 79-year-old woman was admitted complaining of progressive weakness and numbness of the right hand. The patient was otherwise healthy. The patient's history was unremarkable. Clinical and electrophysiological examination revealed a compression of the ulnar nerve in the ulnar sulcus and in Guyon's canal. Ultrasound evaluation showed a suspicious tumour proximal to the elbow close to the ulnar nerve. The ulnar sulcus was then released and an epineural and perineural lesion 3-4 cm proximal to the sulcus was excised under microscope. The histopathology confirmed the lesion as non-caseating sarcoi

Fifty cadaver hands were dissected to better delineate the extensor tendon anatomy to the little finger. The extensor digitorum communis was present in 35. Of 15 hands without an extensor digitorum communis, 12 had a junctura present. Three hands lacked both extensor digitorum communis and juncturae. Transfer of the extensor digiti minimi tendon in these hands could cause loss of extension to the little finger. Ten hands had a direct attachment of the extensor digiti minimi tendon on the abductor tubercle. Twenty-two hands had either an attachment of the extensor digiti minimi on the abductor

OBJECT: The palmar cutaneous branch of the ulnar nerve (PCUN) has received little attention in the literature, and to the authors' knowledge, has received no attention in the neurosurgical literature. The present study was performed to help the surgeon minimize postoperative complications of nerve decompression at the wrist.
METHODS: Forty cadaveric upper limbs underwent dissection of the ulnar nerve in the forearm, at the wrist, and in the palm. The PCUN was investigated and when identified, measurements were made and relationships documented between this cutaneous branch and the ulnar arter

The rate of failure or recurrence after ulnar nerve release at the elbow is up to 25%. Various biomaterials have been developed to protect nerves from postoperative adhesions. The aim of this study was to review a case series of 40 surgical revision procedures of the ulnar nerve at the elbow, protected by a collagen membrane (Cova™ ORTHO). Forty patients who had this revision surgery between January 2013 and December 2017 were reviewed: 34 were evaluated in person, 6 were evaluated over the phone. The operation consisted in release of the ulnar nerve, anterior subcutaneous transposition and ne

We report a rare anatomical variation of an anomalous supernumerary muscle in a male cadaver. It was crossing Guyon's canal, superficial to the ulnar nerve and ulnar artery, and inserted into the aponeurosis of the little finger. This muscle could potentially cause entrapment of the ulnar nerve in Guyon's canal.

Among the entrapment neuropathies, ulnar neuropathy at the elbow is second only to carpal tunnel syndrome in frequency; however, diagnosis and management are considerably more difficult in ulnar lesions than in carpal tunnel syndrome. Electrodiagnosis is the most important means of identifying and localizing ulnar neuropathies at the elbow, but even sophisticated techniques may sometimes fail to confirm diagnosis and localization preoperatively. Mild lesions are best managed conservatively. More severe lesions require surgical intervention. Simple decompression is now preferred over transposit

Peripheral nerve lesions are uncommon but serious injuries which may delay or preclude an athlete's safe return to sports. Early, accurate anatomical diagnosis is essential. Nerve lesions may be due to acute injury (e.g. from a direct blow) or chronic injury secondary to repetitive microtrauma (entrapment). Accurate diagnosis is based upon physical examination and a knowledge of the relative anatomy. Palpation, neurological testing and provocative manoeuvres are mainstays of physical diagnosis. Diagnostic suspicion can be confirmed by electrophysiological testing, including electromyography an

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective Cohort Study.
OBJECTIVES: Cervical radiculopathy and peripheral entrapment neuropathies often have overlapping symptoms that are difficult to distinguish on physical examination. Small-scale studies have attempted to report the incidence of this phenomenon, often called double crush syndrome (DCS), with varying results. The present study aims to determine the incidence of concomitant cervical radiculopathy and peripheral nerve compression and to determine if the DCS hypothesis, which states that compression of a nerve at one site leaves it more susceptible to compr

BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE WORK: Hypothenar Hammer Syndrome is a relatively rare disease process caused by repetitive stress or injury to the hypothenar eminence leading to chronic injury to the ulnar artery. Our study reports an unusual case.
METHODS: A 57 years old Plumber presented in April 2016 with a history of constant pain and recurrent paresthesia involving the fingers of the right hand for several months, over the previous 1 year, his hand had become more intolerant of exposure to cold temperatures. Angio-RNM and electromyography were performed and showed a severe double compression o

We describe the acute development of ulnar nerve compression following carpal tunnel release in a patient with an accessory palmaris longus muscle. Although anomalous muscles in the wrist are relatively common and may produce ulnar nerve compression, this particular occurrence following carpal tunnel release has not been previously described in the literature. We theorize that the compression of the ulnar nerve proximal to Guyon's canal was caused by increased tension along the long axis of the anomalous accessory palmaris longus muscle as a consequence of transverse carpal ligament division.

Compressive neuropathy of the ulnar nerve in the upper limb is a common problem that frequently results in severe disabilities. At the elbow, Lundborg concluded that the nerve was "asking for trouble" because of its anatomic course through confined spaces and posterior to the axis of elbow flexion. Normally, the ulnar nerve is subjected to stretch and compression forces that are moderated by its ability to glide in its anatomic path around the elbow. When normal excursion is restricted, irritation ensues. This results in a cycle of perineural scarring, further loss of excursion, and progressiv

Keloid scarring of the distal upper extremity is very rare. We report a Caucasian woman who presented with aggressive keloids of the hand and wrist causing De Quervain's syndrome, superficial radial-nerve entrapment and ulnar-nerve compression at the wrist. Multiple operations were required to alleviate her symptoms. A number of management conundrums arose, requiring defensive planning to pre-empt the possible complications of recurrent keloid scarring as a result of the surgical procedures.

Two cases of ulnar tunnel syndrome at the wrist are described. In both cases an anomalous hypothenar muscle, flexor digiti minimi brevis accessorius, was in part the causative factor. Contributing to the symptoms of nerve compression was swelling associated with rheumatoid disease and Colles' fracture, respectively. Decompression of the nerve including subtotal removal of the anomalous muscle effected complete recovery. Its phylogeny, morphology and clinical significance are discussed in relation to previously described anomalies of the hypothenar muscles.

Neck pain, headaches, upper thoracic pain, and dystonic scalene muscles are common findings in patients who have severe entrapment neuropathies of the upper extremities. This problem was taken to the laboratory in an attempt to discover the correlation between distal entrapment neuropathies, brachial plexus entrapments, and prominent scalenus muscles. When increased pressure (over 40 mmHg) was applied to the median and ulnar nerves in the forelimbs of eight goats, increased electromyographic activity was noted in the ipsilateral scalenus muscle. Pressures ranging from 100 to 150 mmHg caused in
