The positive diagnosis of tricuspid insufficiency is simple: it consists in demonstrating in pulsated Doppler, the presence of retro-tricuspid systolic turbulence in the right atrium. The best views for this diagnosis are the 4 cavities apical section and the mitro-tricuspid section. This criterion appears to be extremely specific and only exceptional left ventricle-right atrium communications are capable to also generate right intra-atrial turbulences. In a series of 514 consecutive cholecystectomy specimens excised for biliary disease, 1.4% exhibited early carcinoma and 4.5% advanced. On the other hand benign tumors and pseudotumors were observed in 2.0% of cholesterol polyps, 0.8% adenomas, 1.0% inflammatory polyps and 10.8% adenomyomatosis. On the basis of these finding in this series, diagnostic usefulness and difficulties of ultrasound were discussed. Sonography can provide critical diagnostic information for preoperative identification of small polypoid lesion and irregular wall thickness.

Six infants with hypertrophic pyloric stenosis and 20 control infants were studied ultrasonically on four occasions during the first year of life. At each examination the total diameter and muscle wall thickness of the pylorus were measured. Initially the pylorus was significantly (P less than 0.05) larger in the hypertrophic pyloric stenosis group but returned to normal values by 6 months postoperation. The control group showed a small increase in size of the pylorus over the 12 month period.

Gastric wall structure cannot be visualized neither by conventional ultrasonography nor by endoscopy alone. Using a newly developed ultrasonic endoscope (Olympus GF- UM1 / EUM1 Prototype III) twenty-two patients were examined with the stomach filled with 300-500 cc of de- aired water. Ultrasonographic appearance of the normal gastric wall consists of four layers of different echogenicity. Sonograms of 72 patients with pain and swelling in the groin due to intravenous drug abuse were reviewed, together with 2 cases which were due to trauma. There were 27 abscesses, 36 cases of cellulitis or thrombophlebitis, 7 cases of lymphadenopathy, 3 hematomas, and 1 pseudoaneurysm. Most abscesses presented as distinct masses, while cellulitis was seen most often as soft-tissue swelling.
