BACKGROUND: The surface epithelium of the human ovary simulates the mullerian form in tumor formation. In experimental animals, however, such a phenomenon has not previously been observed.
METHODS: A chemical carcinogen, 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA), was heated, and the central portion of a 3-0 silk suture was immersed in the melted carcinogen. After vaginal cytology, the DMBA-coated silk was inserted into the ovaries of 40 Wistar strain rats age 7 weeks. An elderly woman had an appendicovaginal fistula. Within the appendix was a well differentiated mucin-producing cystadenocarcinoma that extended through the fistula and onto the vaginal mucosal surface. The development of this fistula was probably related to the tumor and a previous hysterectomy, which allowed close proximity of the tip of the appendix to the vaginal vault.

Due to their rarity, benign masses of the periurethral tissues and anterior vaginal wall are poorly understood. Arriving at the proper evaluation and treatment is challenging because many of these masses have similar presenting signs and symptoms, as well as overlapping differential diagnoses. An 80-year-old white woman developed vulvar melanosis and malignant melanoma of the labia majora and clitoris and underwent a simple vulvectomy. She subsequently developed melanosis of the urinary bladder and presented 3 years later with multifocal malignant melanoma involving the vagina, urethra, and urinary bladder in a background of extensive melanosis with variable degrees of atypia. She underwent radical surgery but died 18 months later with liver metastases and liver failure. Malignant melanoma is uncommon in the vulva and vagina and is rare in the urinary bladder. Seventy nonpregnant women with extensive condylomata of the vagina were treated either with intravaginal 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) cream or the CO2 laser. Treatment results were correlated with the morphologic type of condylomata, ie, papillary acuminata (58 patients), and flat condylomata (12 patients). Ten and 31% of women with Condylomata acuminata had persistent disease within nine months after a single course of 5-FU and laser therapy, respectively. Total failure rates after a second either 5-FU or laser treatment were 3.4%. The failure rates for flat condylomata were 50 and 16.6% after 5-FU

We report an18-year-old girl with a four-year history of a slow-growing labial mass with a sudden increase in size in the last year. Examination revealed a large fleshy 20 cm perineal mass centering on the left labia majora and attached to it by a 1cm pedicle. It was associated with pain, ulceration and discharge.
