The functional modulation of lymphatic vessels may be closely associated with intact structures of the vagus nerve. Ten patients with chronic duodenal ulcer underwent posterior truncal vagotomy combined with anterior seromyotomy of lesser curvature of the stomach (Taylor's procedure). Perioperative acid secretory studies (Horlland test) and gastric emptying tests were performed. Postoperative recovery was uneventful in all patients. The acid secretory studies showed decreased BAO, MAO and PAO (P < 0.01). The postoperative gastric emptying was significantly delayed, and the patients are all symptom free. Follow up gastroscopy revealed ulcer healing in 7 patients.

An analysis of 175 organ preserving operations for duodenal ulcer is presented. Lethality was 1.24%; intraoperative complications--2.48%; postoperative complications--6.83%. Long-term results were followed in 61.5% of the patients. They are analyzed according to the kind of vagotomy and draining operations used. The author recommends to use drainage of the stomach more often, combined vagotomy should be chosen as the kind of vagotomy.

Epidemiologic studies have suggested that vagotomy increases subsequent colorectal cancer risk. This hypothesis was investigated in the rat 1,2 dimethylhydrazine (DMH) colorectal carcinogenesis model. Eighty-five rats were divided into four groups having either truncal vagotomy and Heineke-Mickulicz pyloroplasty, pyloroplasty alone, laparotomy alone, and anesthesia alone. An experimental study investigated the effect of truncal vagotomy and pyloroplasty (TV + P) alone or combined with cholecystectomy on bile reflux into the stomach. The amount of bile reflux was estimated by measuring the concentration of bile phospholipids in the gastric contents. During each test, reflux was measured over a continuous period of 6 hours.
