Multidrug and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus isolates in different productive stages of a poultry farm.

The poultry industry represents an important economic sector in Argentina. In this study we recovered 26 vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) isolates from different productive stages of a poultry farm located in Tandil, Argentina. Ten isolates were Enterococcus faecium and seven, Enterococcus faecalis. Total resistance to vancomycin (96.2%), erythromycin (80.8%), levofloxacin (57.7%), chloramphenicol (26.7%), penicillin (23.1%), ampicillin (7.7%) was detected and 20 isolates (76.9%) were identified as multidrug-resistant (MDR). With respect to the distribution of glycopeptide resistance ge

Outbreak of Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus in a NICU: Insights into Molecular Detection and Infection Control.

Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) are a major cause of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). However, the clinical significance of VRE colonization and the subsequent risk of VRE infection in hospitalized patients are not fully established. Prolonged hospital stays have been observed in neonates colonized by VRE. The mortality rate in pediatric patients with VRE infections ranges from 0% to 42% in both endemic and outbreak settings, often occurring in VRE-colonized neonates. Host and bacterial factors associated with a worse outcome are not fully understood yet. We describe an outbreak

Enhanced Killing of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus With Ceftaroline or Vancomycin in Combination With Carbapenems.

BACKGROUND: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteremia is associated with high rates of treatment failure, even when antibiotics showing in vitro susceptibility are used. Early optimization of therapy is crucial to reduce morbidity and mortality. Building on our previous research on carbapenem therapy for methicillin-susceptible S aureus bacteremia, we examined the utility of adjunctive carbapenems (ertapenem or meropenem) to enhance the efficacy of ceftaroline or vancomycin for treatment of MRSA. METHODS: The effectiveness of combination therapy versus monotherapy against

Management of Recurrent Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium Bacteremia With Oritavancin: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus causes significant morbidity, mortality, and excess healthcare costs when compared to vancomycin-susceptible isolates. Patients with hematological malignancies, especially those who undergo hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, are at a particularly high risk for infections with vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus, with mortality ranging from 40-100%. Linezolid and daptomycin are the two most commonly used antibiotics for treatment of vancomycin-resistant enterococcal infections, however, there has been recent emergence of resistance to these

Epidemiological profiles and pathogenicity of Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium clinical isolates in Taiwan.

The emerging Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VRE-fm) is an opportunistic pathogen causing nosocomial infections. The identification of VRE-fm is important for successful prevention and control in healthcare settings. VRE-fm clinical isolates obtained from regional hospitals in northern Taiwan were characterized for antimicrobial susceptibility, virulence genes and biofilm production. Most isolates exhibited multi-drug resistance and carried the virulence genes, esp and hyl. While all isolates produce biofilms, those isolates that carried esp exhibited greater biofilm production. Iso

Epidemiology and outcomes of vancomycin-resistant enterococcus infections: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) cause many infections in the healthcare context. Knowledge regarding the epidemiology and burden of VRE infections, however, remains fragmented. We aimed to summarize recent studies on VRE epidemiology and outcomes in hospitals, long-term-care facilities (LTCFs) and nursing homes worldwide based on current epidemiological reports. We searched MEDLINE/PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and Web of Science for observational studies, which reported on VRE faecium and faecalis infections in in-patients published between January 2014 and December 2020. Outcomes were

Molecular characterization of vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolated from bovine milk.

Vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (VRSA) is a zoonotic life-threatening pathogen. Vancomycin exhibits anti-bacterial activity by inhibiting peptidoglycan synthesis by binding to the D-ala-D-ala terminus of the peptidoglycan. But in VRSA, D-ala-D-ala is replaced by D-ala-D-lactate due to the presence of vanA, vanB or vanD genes. This study was intended to identify the molecular prevalence of VRSA in 768 bovine milk samples, risk factor association, antibiogram profile and bioinformatics analysis of VRSA by targeting vanB gene. Out of a total of 248 S. aureus isolates from mastitic milk

Characterization of Multidrug-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Isolates and Comparison of Methods of Susceptibility to Vancomycin.

S. aureus are among the main bacteria causing problems related to multidrug resistance in nosocomial infections. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out a reliable and rapid diagnosis for the identification of the bacteria and characterization of its susceptibility profile, especially vancomycin, which is an alternative treatment against multidrug-resistant (MDR) S. aureus. Thus, the goal of this study was to characterize isolates of S. aureus regarding the resistance and virulence and to check the susceptibility to vancomycin, through different methods, for comparative purposes. Seventeen ant

High frequency and diversity of Vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE) in Algerian healthcare settings.

The spread of vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE) in Algerian hospital settings is poorly reported. Since the first report in 2006, few data have been available on the molecular mechanism of this resistance across the country. In this study, we investigate the frequency and antibiotic resistance mechanisms of Enterococci strains isolated from hospitalised patients in the Tlemcen university hospital. 191 Enterococcus spp. strains were collected from various clinical samples and were identified using MALDI-TOF-MS. The presence of van genes was investigated by standard PCR and sequencing. Resu

Digestive Decolonization of Colorectal Carriage of Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium in a Japanese Adult.

Patients with vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) colonization should be managed in an isolation room with contact precautions. We herein report a patient whose colorectal carriage of VRE was successfully decolonized using concomitant bowel irrigation with polyethylene glycol, probiotics, and oral antimicrobials, linezolid and orally-administered daptomycin, for release from isolation and contact precautions. We therefore would like to suggest a potential strategy for managing patients with VRE colonization.
