Persistent left cranial vena cava in a dog.

A 10-year-old golden retriever was presented for the evaluation of exercise intolerance. Physical examination and laboratory tests showed no abnormalities except for mild anaemia. Standard transthoracic echocardiography revealed dilated coronary sinus, raising suspicion of a persistent left cranial vena cava, and the persistency of this anomaly was confirmed by agitated-saline study. Right ventricular echocardiographic parameters did not change significantly, while conventional parameters and global longitudinal strain analysis revealed left ventricular systolic dysfunction. Moreover, post-sys

Acute inferior vena cava thromboembolism in pregnancy.

A multigravida in her late 20s was diagnosed with inferior vena cava thrombosis (IVCT) and PE at 26 weeks of pregnancy after a routine prenatal care visit. The patient denied any diseases that could cause IVCT, as well as the presence of any symptoms. Progressive thrombocytopenia was diagnosed in the period until the implantation of the inferior vena cava filter (IVCF). Due to a rupture of foetal membranes and chorioamnionitis, labour was induced at 32 weeks of pregnancy. The IVCF remained in place and anticoagulants were continued through the postpartum period for up to 6 months.

Pacemaker-Induced Superior Vena Cava Syndrome.

Superior vena cava (SVC) syndrome is a result of impaired blood flow from the SVC to the right atrium, leading to venous congestion in the head and neck. It can be caused by clotting disorders or compressive tumors of the head and neck but has become more prevalent in the setting of implantable devices such as pacemakers. As such, managing these patients can present challenges for physicians who have to account for SVC syndrome as well as their underlying condition requiring an implantable cardiac device. Our case represents one such patient who developed SVC syndrome as a result of pacemaker

Superior vena cava syndrome presenting as chylothorax.

Chylothorax caused by superior vena cava (SVC) syndrome is a rare but potentially life-threatening complication requiring a multidisciplinary diagnosis and management approach. We present a case of a 27-year-old female with end-stage renal disease who developed chylothorax secondary to SVC syndrome caused by venous stenosis from a tunneled hemodialysis (HD) catheter. The patient had a history of ongoing hemodialysis through a tunneled catheter placed in the right internal jugular vein approximately seven months before presentation. She presented with dyspnea, chest pain, and a large left-sided

Superior Vena Cava Syndrome: An Umbrella Review.

Superior vena cava syndrome (SVCS) is a medical emergency that encompasses an array of signs and symptoms due to obstruction of blood flow through the superior vena cava (SVC). It poses a significant healthcare burden due to its associated morbidity and mortality. Its impact on the healthcare system continues to grow due to the increasing incidence of the condition. This incidence trend has been attributed to the growing use of catheters, pacemakers, and defibrillators, although it is a rare complication of these devices. The most common cause of SVCS remains malignancies accounting for up to

[Aneurysm of the inferior vena cava : A case report].

Venous aneurysms in general, and of the inferior vena cava in particular (IVC), are rarely reported in the literature because they are generally asymptomatic and detected incidentally following complications such as thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, an Inferior vena cava (IVC) aneurysm is detected by imaging examinations performed for other causes. We report a case of IVC aneurysm classified as type I according to Gradman and Steinberg discovered incidentally during a follow-up CT scan in an asymptomatic woman followed for endometrial adenocarcinoma treated 6 years ago.

Back to the Basics: Inferior Vena Cava Filters.

Inferior vena cava filters are an important therapeutic option for patients with venous thromboembolism and contraindication to anticoagulation. Indications for filter placement have varied over the previous decades. This article discusses the history of inferior vena cava filter use, with a basic overview of technology and specific devices. Finally, this article reviews emerging filter design and technology. Understanding the basics of inferior vena cava filters is critical to building more robust clinical data for the purpose of improving patient outcomes.

Fracture of a Temporary Inferior Vena Cava Filter.

Anticoagulation is recommended for the treatment of pulmonary embolism (PE) and deep vein thrombosis (DVT). In some cases, an inferior vena cava (IVC) filter is used to prevent PE. We report the case of a 70-year-old woman who developed non-massive PE and proximal DVT, which were treated using an IVC filter; two filters were placed owing to the fracture of the filters. Few previous reports have discussed IVC fractures and the difficulty in detecting such fractures on computed tomography before retrieval. Based on our experience, we suggest that a temporary IVC filter for DVT treatment should b

Treatment strategies for inferior vena cava aneurysms.

OBJECTIVE: An inferior vena cava (IVC) aneurysm is a rare but potentially life-threatening entity. We successfully embolized an IVC aneurysm in a patient with history of blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome, a rare syndrome with multiple venous malformations. This new case was added to a literature review of previously reported cases, to analyze the management algorithm. METHODS: A PubMed search for all English-language articles and abstracts of IVC aneurysm were conducted. A comprehensive descriptive analysis, including etiology, presentation, classification, comorbidities, and treatment options

An expert spotlight on inferior vena cava filters.

Introduction: Inferior vena cava (IVC) filters are mechanical filtration devices designed as an alternative to surgical ligation/plication of the IVC. Their use has been controversial, especially with the introduction of retrievable filters and expanded/prophylactic indications.Areas covered: Authors discuss the types of available IVC filters, indications for placement, evidence on their effectiveness in general and specific patient populations, procedural considerations, off-label use, complications, and filter retrieval. This review is based on manuscripts/abstracts published from 1960 to 20

Superior vena cava stenosis presenting with bendopnea.

Bendopnea, or dyspnoea with bending forward, is a recently described symptom of heart failure that is associated with elevated ventricular filling pressures. Here, we describe a case of superior vena cava (SVC) stenosis that presented with bendopnea and resolved with SVC recanalisation. We suggest that SVC stenosis be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients who experience bendopnea.

Splenomegaly and hypersplenism in hepatic vena cava syndrome.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Hepatic vena cava syndrome (HVCS) is a bacterial infection-induced obliterative disease of the inferior vena cava at the site of the hepatic vein openings that causes chronic liver disease with a high incidence of liver cirrhosis and a moderate incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). HVCS typically manifests clinically as recurrent mild jaundice and/or a mild elevation of transaminases or ascites as a result of hepatic venous outflow obstruction. This study is an investigation of the complications and treatment results of a large cohort of HVCS patients with an emphasi

Inferior Vena Cava Syndrome: A Rare Complication.

UNLABELLED: Inferior vena cava syndrome is rare and often difficult to diagnose because of its rarity and consequent low suspicion. We describe the case of a 28-year-old female patient with a history of nephroblastoma of the right kidney, stage IV, with a favourable histology with epidural metastasis (D5-D9), diagnosed at 3 years of age. The patient underwent treatment with surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The patient suffered from sudden low back pain worsening over 2 weeks, with progressive inability to walk. The pain radiated to the front of the thighs. Concomitantly, oedema of the l

Surgical Tips for Inferior Vena Cava Thrombectomy.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this review is to describe the preoperative evaluation, surgical techniques, and postoperative management of patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC) undergoing radical nephrectomy (RN) and inferior vena cava (IVC) thrombectomy. RECENT FINDINGS: RN and IVC thrombectomy remains the standard management option in non-metastatic RCC patients with IVC thrombus. A comprehensive preoperative workup, including high-quality imaging, blood works, and appropriate consultations are required for all patients. The aim of the surgery is complete resection of all tumor burden, w

Superior vena cava syndrome and pulmonary adenocarcinoma.

We report a large-cell adenocarcinoma of the lung in a tobacco smoker with classical superior vena cava syndrome and digital clubbing. Computed tomography and nuclear magnetic resonance revealed the involvement of the vena cava and metastases in the left adrenal gland and central nervous system. Biopsy samples of the mass yielded the diagnosis. The patient underwent a schedule of palliative chemotherapy and brain radiotherapy.
