Vertical orbital dystopia--surgical correction.

The surgical correction of vertical malpositions of the human eye has been made relatively safe and reliable by recent surgical techniques. The authors define this condition as vertical orbital dystopia and review the etiology of this deformity in 38 recent consecutive cases that were surgically treated at the Craniofacial Anomalies Center of The University of Virginia. Some new and useful tests are described that are of value to the plastic surgeon in analysis of the facial deformity and in planning the appropriate surgical procedure to correct the vertical dystopia of one or both eyes. Deep overbite correction by intrusion.

Not all patients with deep overbite should be treated with the same mechanics. Some patients require intrusion of the anterior teeth, while others require primarily extrusion. This article has discussed the principles of incisor and canine intrusion and has demonstrated the use of intrusion springs that are capable of intruding incisors with minimal side effects on the posterior teeth. Six principles must be considered in incisor or canine intrusion: (1) the use of optimal magnitudes of force and the delivery of this force constantly with low-load-deflection springs; (2) the use of a single po

Self-assessment of profile and body image among orthognathic surgery patients before and two years after surgery.

Ninety patients undergoing surgery at two major university hospitals completed self-ratings of their profile, perceived deviations from the ideal profile, and a measure of body image. Identical measures were obtained presurgically and two years following surgery. Patients diagnosed with mandibular hypoplasia perceived themselves significantly more prognathic on the maxillary dimension and most retrognathic on the mandibular dimension; their self-drawings reflected a shorter vertical dimension. These perceptions approached the normal range at the postsurgical assessment. Patients treated for ma…

A cephalometric comparison of black open-bite subjects and black normals.

Orthodontic surveys of the adolescent and adult population of the United States have shown that the incidence of anterior open bite is three to four times higher in blacks than in whites. A cephalometric comparison of black subjects with and without an open bite was used to identify skeletal and dental differences between the two groups. Statistically significant differences were found in the vertical skeletal dimensions and incisor proclination. The open-bite group had a significantly longer anterior lower facial height and total facial height. The mandibular plane was rotated down relative t

Three-dimensionally printed, noninvasive restorations in the treatment of localized tooth wear using the Dahl approach: A preliminary clinical trial.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Localized tooth wear compromises function and esthetics, while conventional restorative options often require invasive preparation. Evidence on the long-term stability of 3-dimensionally (3D) printed restorations applying the Dahl concept is limited. PURPOSE: The purpose of this preliminary clinical trial was to evaluate the clinical feasibility and long-term stability of 3D printed, noninvasive restorations implementing the Dahl concept for managing localized tooth wear while preserving tooth structure and restoring vertical dimension of occlusion. MATERIAL AND METHODS…

Colloid Deposit Morphology and Clogging in Porous Media: Fundamental Insights Through Investigation of Deposit Fractal Dimension.

Experiments reveal a wide discrepancy between the permeability of porous media containing colloid deposits and the available predictive equations. Evidence suggests that this discrepancy results, in part, from the predictive equations failing to account for colloid deposit morphology. This article reports a series of experiments using static light scattering (SLS) to characterize colloid deposit morphology within refractive index matched (RIM) porous media during flow through a column. Real time measurements of permeability, specific deposit, deposit fractal dimension, and deposit radius of gy

Three-Dimensional Assessment of Temporomandibular Joint Morphology and Facial Asymmetry in Individuals with Different Vertical Skeletal Growth Patterns.

The aim of the current study was to investigate, by means of Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT), condyle−fossa relationship, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) morphology and facial asymmetry in subjects with different vertical skeletal growth patterns. CBCT of 56 patients (112 TMJs) were categorized into three groups according to the mandibular plane angle (MP): Hypodivergent (MP ≤ 23°), Normodivergent (23° < MP < 30°), and Hyperdivergent (MP ≥ 30°). TMJ spaces, width and depth of the condyle and thickness of the fossa were measured. Horizontal and vertical measurements were used to assess facia

A diagnostic and treatment planning checklist for vertical problems in orthodontic patients.

Vertical discrepancies in orthodontics represent a complex and multifactorial diagnostic challenge. Traditional approaches often lack a consistent correlation between facial patterns, overbite, and occlusal vertical dimension, limiting a comprehensive treatment planning. This article proposes a diagnostic checklist structured around five key factors-lower anterior facial height, incisor display at rest, posterior dental height, overbite, and occlusal wear-to assess vertical problems across macro-, mini-, and microesthetic levels. The amount of incisor display at rest serves as the guiding para…

An analysis of the retinal afferents to the cat's medial interlaminar nucleus and to its rostral thalamic extension, the "geniculate wing".

The retinal afferents to the medial interlaminar nucleus and to its rostro-dorsal extension at the edge of the pulvinar have been studied in cats by fiber degeneration and autoradiographic methods. Fiber degeneration following section of one optic nerve shows two distinct retinal inputs: One is coarse-fibered and goes to the medial interlaminar nucleus itself; the second, which is fine-fibered, goes to the rostral and medial borders of the medial interlaminar nucleus and continues into the pulvinar. The regions in receipt of these fine fibers have been called the "geniculate wing". The topogra

A cephalometric analysis of underlying components of deep overbite malocclusion.

BACKGROUND: Deep overbite is a critical parameter in orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning, reflecting the excessive vertical overlap of anterior teeth. It not only affects facial esthetics but may also contribute to functional disturbances. It is influenced by a complex interplay of skeletal, dental, and angular factors. Understanding the relative association of these components is critical for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment planning. So, this study aims to determine which skeletal and dental components most significantly affect deep overbite. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The st

The effect of serial extractions compared to enucleations on skeletal, dental, and soft tissues: a longitudinal evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Tooth size-arch length deficiencies (TSALD) malocclusions can be treated either with or without extractions in growing patients. The extraction treatments are usually recommended in severe crowding and involve the serial extractions (SEs) or the enucleation (EE) therapies. The aim of the present retrospective study was to compare the skeletal and dental effects of serial extraction and enucleation treatments in subjects with severe crowding in mixed dentition phase. METHODS: Lateral cephalograms from patients who underwent orthodontic treatment involving serial extractions (SE gro
