The chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) is a widely used model in medical research and fulfils the requirements laid out in the 3 R's. The CAM, contains a dense network of blood vessels, essential for embryo development but also makes the chick embryo an invaluable resource for the study of angiogenesis and the haemotoxicity of substances. Non-neurotoxic snake venom is responsible worldwide for numerous deaths but also has been found to have a vast range of medicinal benefit. This study combines evaluating the time of onset and intensity of effects of three whole viper venoms (Bitis aritans,

Adjuvant emulsions are widely used to enhance the antibody response of the animals used as immunoglobulin source for producing antivenoms. Usually, the adjuvant activity of emulsions is attributed both to their ability to trigger "danger" signals from cells in which they induce death, and to form depots from which immunogens are slowly released. However, there is contradictory evidence suggesting that adjuvant activity of emulsions is independent of the dispersion type and the rate of immunogen release. In order to test how physical properties of emulsions, composed of mineral oil and water, a

We report a recent case of common adder (Vipera berus) envenoming causing paralytic signs and symptoms. A 12-year-old girl was bitten by the nominate subspecies of the common adder (V. berus berus) in eastern Hungary on May 2, 2012, 22 km away from where the first neurotoxic V. berus berus envenoming was reported in 2008. The patient developed unambiguous cranial nerve disturbances, manifested in bilateral impairment characterized by oculomotor paralysis with partial ptosis, gaze paresis, and diplopia. Drowsiness and photophobia were her additional symptoms; both occurred only during the first

Heparin, which was widely used thirty years ago for the treatment of viper envenomations, is now contra-indicated during the acute phase, which is at risk for hemorrhage and death. We report a case of pulmonary embolism, a rare situation in the context of viper envenomation. By means of this case report, we want to discuss the pathophysiological links between envenomation and thromboembolic disease, and on the other hand, the potential heparin usefulness, not during the acute, hemorrhagic phase, but as a prophylactic treatment when hemorrhagic risk has been replaced by an inflammatory syndrome

BACKGROUND: Vipera palaestinae is the commonest venomous snake in Israel. V. palaestinae-specific antivenom is indicated for both systemic effects and marked progressive local signs. In our experience, clinicians are often not aware of the morbidity associated with the local effect of the venom and consequently do not administer the antivenom in envenomations with local effects only.
OBJECTIVE: To describe unusual local complications of inadequately treated V. palaestinae envenomation.
CASE SERIES: Three cases of V. palaestinae bites involving distal parts of the limbs are reported. Within 3

A 7-year-old boy presented to the emergency department with severe hypotension and lethargy after a rattlesnake bite. He developed anaphylaxis to antivenom and required intubation, epinephrine, antihistamines, and steroids. Severe rhabdomyolysis and myoglobinuric kidney failure developed over 24 hours, with a peak creatine phosphokinase level of 214,500 units/L. Severe hypocalcemic tetany was treated with replacement therapy. Local wound swelling was never severe and the patient had no coagulopathies. Marked motor weakness improved with antivenom administration. Because of the myotoxic and neu

Snake genomes attract significant attention from multiple disciplines, including medicine, drug bioprospection, and evolutionary biology. However, genomic research within the Viperidae family has mostly focused on the subfamily Crotalinae, while the true vipers (Viperinae) have largely been overlooked. European vipers (Vipera) have been the subject of extensive research due to their phylogeographic and ecological diversification, as well as their venoms. Nevertheless, phylogeography and systematics in this genus have primarily relied on biased information from mitochondrial genes, which fail t…

C-type lectins are the major non-enzymatic protein constituents in Viperidae venoms. Neuwlectin, a novel member of the C-type lectin family, was purified to homogeneity from Bothrops neuwiedi venom and characterized as a 32.2 kDa homodimer of 16.2 kDa subunits by MALDI-TOF. In this study, we investigated its effect on platelet aggregation triggered by cancer cells and on angiogenesis. Each subunit contains 135 amino acids with eight cysteine residues and shares high sequence similarity to homologous snake venom Ca2-dependent C-type lectins. Neuwlectin induced agglutination of rabbit and human …

Snake venoms have surged as model systems in evolutionary biology thanks to the dynamic diversification and accelerated evolution of many toxin families. Among these, phospholipase A2 (PLA2) constitute a prime example as they are ubiquitous across the venomous snake radiation and have evolved a wide variety of pathophysiological activities. This is especially true in vipers (family Viperidae), one of the most successful and medically significant venomous snake lineages worldwide. In this study, we gathered publicly available sequences of viper venom PLA2s to recreate the molecular phylogeny an…

CONTEXT: The vast majority of the 2.5 million annual worldwide venomous snakebites are attributed to Viperidae or Elapidae envenomations. Of the nearly 2000 Colubridae species described, only a handful are known to cause medically significant envenomations. Considered medically insignificant, Heterodon nasicus (Western Hognose Snake) is a North American rear-fanged colubrid common in the legal pet trading industry. Previously reported cases of envenomations describe local pain, swelling, edema, and blistering. However, there are no reported cases of systemic or hematologic toxicity.

Human sparganosis is a zoonotic disease caused by infection with larval forms (procercoid/plerocercoid) of Spirometra spp. The purpose of this study was to identify Spirometra spp. of infected snakes using a multiplex PCR assay and phylogenetic analysis of mitochondrial DNA sequence data from the spargana of terrestrial snakes obtained from Korea and China. A total of 283 snakes were obtained that included 4 species of Colubridae comprising Rhabdophis tigrinus tigrinus (n=150), Dinodon rufozonatum rufozonatum (n=64), Elaphe davidi (n=2), and Elaphe schrenkii (n=7), and 1 species of Viperidae, …

We investigated levels of plasma progesterone (P4), 17β-estradiol (E2), testosterone (T), and corticosterone (CORT) during gestation and post-birth periods in wild-collected female copperhead snakes (Viperidae; Agkistrodon contortrix). We also sought to determine whether CORT levels at (or near) birth dramatically increase and were correlated with duration of labor and litter size. Specifically, pregnant subjects (N = 14) were collected during early- to mid-gestation, held in the laboratory, and repeatedly bled to obtain plasma for steroid analyses. Progesterone showed significant changes duri…
