Multispectral infrared-to-full-color upconversion expanding human vision.

The human visual system is inherently blind to infrared radiation due to the insufficient energy of infrared photons to trigger the photoisomerization of the retinal chromophore, resulting in the loss of over half of the solar spectrum. Here, we report a colloidal quantum dot (CQD)-based infrared-to-visible upconverter that enables ultrasensitive upconversion of multispectral infrared light radiation as full-color visible vision. The photon-energy-selective excitonic transitions in quantum-confined states and the photon flux, respectively, enable infrared wavelength- and intensity-dependent nu

Eye movements in visual impairment.

This Special Issue describes the impact of visual impairment on visuomotor function. It includes contributions that examine gaze control in conditions associated with abnormal visual development such as amblyopia, dyslexia and neurofibromatosis as well as disorders associated with field loss later in life, such as macular degeneration and stroke. Specifically, the papers address both gaze holding (fixation), and gaze-following behavior (single saccades, sequences of saccades and smooth-pursuit) that characterize active vision in daily life and evaluate the influence of both pathological and si

Body Balance Analysis in the Visually Impaired Individuals Aged 18-24 Years.

BACKGROUND: Proper body balance is maintained by both sensory, i.e., vision, hearing, vestibular, and proprioception, and motor nervous systems. Visual control facilitates balance both in a static position, as well as during movement. Visual dysfunctions can adversely affect balance and stability control. METHODS: The study comprised a group of 30 individuals visually impaired from birth aged 18-24 years. The control group consisted of 50 persons in the same age range as the study group. The trial was performed as four separate tests: two on a stable surface platform, and two on an unstable s

Vision therapy improves binocular visual dysfunction in patients with mild traumatic brain injury.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate benefits of binocular vision and ocular motility training in patients with long-term sequelae after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). METHODS: Twenty-eight mTBI (concussion) patients from 25 to 61 years of age with oculomotor dysfunction were selected by optometric examination. The vision therapy was designed to improve convergence, pursuit and saccades as well as to increase fusional reserves. The vision therapy was conducted by a neurooptometrist and a speech therapist, and took place weekly for 1 hour during 10 continuous weeks. Between vision training sessions, pa

Vision and vertigo: some visual aspects of vestibular disorders.

This review deals with two syndromes, oscillopsia and visual vertigo. Oscillopsia is the illusion of oscillation of the visual surroundings. For diagnosis purposes one should ask, when does the oscillopsia occur? If oscillopsia is only present during head (or whole body) movements, the likely underlying cause is a bilateral defect in the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR). The more common causes are post meningitic vestibular damage, gentamicin ototoxicity or bilateral idiopathic vestibular failure. When oscillopsia develops after specific head positions, it is usually due to a positional nystagmus

Presbyopic drivers' vision through a convex rear view mirror.

BACKGROUND: Monovision is a commonly used modality for the presbyope who wants to wear contact lenses. If the add for near vision is in the left eye, driving an automobile creates a circumstance whereby the lens wearer cannot obtain a clear image in that eye of distant objects seen in the driver's side outside rear view mirror. METHODS: We have discovered that a stick-on convex mirror eliminates this problem by neutralizing either some or all of the power of the add. RESULTS: The driver wearing an add in the left eye can then obtain a clear image in that eye of objects behind and to the side

Effect of monocular visual loss upon stability of gaze.

Using the eye-coil/magnetic field method, we measured horizontal and vertical movements of both eyes in four patients with monocular loss of vision while they attempted steady, binocular fixation of a visual target. We also measured gaze stability in two normal subjects while they fixed upon a target monocularly, and in one patient with congenital, bilateral blindness. In the patients with monocular visual loss, gaze instability was greater in the blind eye, both vertically and horizontally, compared either with their seeing eye or with nonviewing eyes of control subjects. Gaze instability due

Ocular toxicity following carboplatin chemotherapy for neuroendocrine tumour of the bladder.

INTRODUCTION: Carboplatin is a commonly used platinum analogue chemotherapeutic agent that is similar to cisplatin but is known to be better tolerated. This case report outlines a case of ocular toxicity following carboplatin chemotherapy used for the management of a neuroendocrine tumour of the bladder. CASE REPORT: A 70-year-old man with a history of neuroendocrine bladder cancer underwent chemotherapy with carboplatin and etoposide. He presented 4 weeks following his fourth chemotherapy cycle with a 1-week history of right eye blurriness. The patient had suffered a similar episode 2 weeks

Ocular Lesions in Brucella Infection: A Review of the Literature.

Ocular lesions due to Brucella infection are uncommon and easily overlooked in clinical management, but must be differentiated from non-infectious eye diseases and treated promptly to protect the patient's vision. We reviewed the relevant literature and identified 47 patients with ocular complications of Brucella infection. Among them, 28 showed ocular neuropathy, 15 presented with uveitis, and four patients displayed other ocular symptoms. Ocular symptoms accompanying Brucella infection require prompt diagnosis and treatment. The main methods of diagnosis are intraocular fluid tests and blood

Questionnaire survey on complications during 24-h measurement of intraocular pressure-related patterns with a contact lens sensor.

PURPOSE: We investigated glaucoma patients' complications, subjective symptoms, and side effects of continuous 24-h measurement of intraocular pressure (IOP)-related patterns with a contact lens sensor (CLS). We asked the patients to complete a questionnaire about their subjective symptoms after wearing the CLS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was an observational single-facility study. We analyzed 56 patients (35 men, 21 women) who underwent 24-h continuous measurement of their IOP-related patterns with a Triggerfish® CLS. The four questionnaire items asked whether blurred vision, ocular pain, c…

Age-dependent ocular dominance plasticity in adult mice.

BACKGROUND: Short monocular deprivation (4 days) induces a shift in the ocular dominance of binocular neurons in the juvenile mouse visual cortex but is ineffective in adults. Recently, it has been shown that an ocular dominance shift can still be elicited in young adults (around 90 days of age) by longer periods of deprivation (7 days). Whether the same is true also for fully mature animals is not yet known. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We therefore studied the effects of different periods of monocular deprivation (4, 7, 14 days) on ocular dominance in C57Bl/6 mice of different ages (25 d

[Results of surgical treatment of Stilling-Türk-Duane retraction syndrome].

BACKGROUND: The typical signs of the retraction syndrome (Stilling-Türk-Duane) are abnormal head posture, marked limitation of abduction, slight limitation of adduction and convergence, which are always accompanied by retraction of the globe, narrowing of the palpebral fissure, vertical deviation and increased intraocular pressure upon adduction. All signs are explicable by the co-contraction of the horizontal muscles or the failing relaxation of the lateral rectus muscle. Abnormal synergistic innervation occurs when in aplasia of the abducens nerve the lateral rectus muscle receives abnormal

Visual, refractive, and keratometric results of radial keratotomy. Five-year follow-up.

This article presents five-year findings on the first 156 radial keratotomies in our series. Results are compared with findings on these same eyes at one and three years and with results from other studies. Follow-up at five years was on 123 eyes (79%). Before surgery, the mean spherical equivalent was -5.0 diopters (D). Five years after surgery, the mean change in the spherical equivalent was 5.17 D, and 53% of eyes were within 1 D of emmetropia. Uncorrected visual acuity was 20/200 or worse in 96% of eyes before surgery. At five years, 36% had 20/20 acuity or better, and 75% were 20/40 or be

Ocular Toxocara in siblings of two families. Diagnosis confirmed by ELISA test.

To my knowledge this study of two families with ocular Toxocara is the first in the literature to report involvement of more than one sibling. All four children had far-advanced disease with irreversible loss of macular vision in the affected eye. The clinical findings were confirmed by the ELISA test. With laboratory confirmation of the clinical findings, I expect to find not only more patients in the population at large with ocular Toxocara, but also expect to find numerous siblings in a particular family to be involved as well. Therefore, when ocular Toxocara is found in a child, every sibl
