[The Subretinal Implant - Clinical Results].

Since the end of the last century, subretinal electronic chips have been used to restore vision in patients blinded by degenerative retinal diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa. Various procedures have been suggested by different international scientific groups. The promising were the retinal-based concepts, for which there are now human data. The two distinct retina-based concepts not only differ in the site of stimulation (epi- or subretinal), but in their physiological concept. Whereas in camera-based systems (epiretinal, transchoroidal), eye movements cannot be used to detect objects, thi

Direct Anterior Approach Provides Superior Prosthesis Adaptability in the Early Postoperative Period of Total Hip Arthroplasty.

OBJECTIVES: Prosthesis awareness is the perception of foreign bodies, which has a critical effect on the function of the prosthetic joint. In total hip arthroplasty (THA), the direct anterior approach (DAA) has more advantages than the posterior approach (PA), including superior rehabilitation outcomes. This study was to evaluate the recovery of "prosthesis awareness" through these two approaches. METHODS: Three hundred and seventy-six patients who received THA with either DAA (n = 41) or PA (n = 335) from January 2016 to December 2017 were retrospectively analyzed. The Forgotten Joint Score-

Multilayered amniotic membrane transplantation for tectonic stabilization and symptomatic relief in pediatric post-traumatic corneal thinning: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT) is a recognized technique in ocular surface reconstruction. Its application in pediatric patients remains less extensively documented across a range of ocular-surface indications. There is a literature gap regarding its use for rehabilitating symptomatic, post-traumatic corneal thinning with surface irregularity, where the goal shifts from visual recovery to achieving a painless, stable ocular surface amenable to prosthetic fitting. We detail the surgical strategy aimed at achieving rapid surface stabilization and highlight the considerations

Radial Head Prosthetic Replacement in Adolescents: A Report of 5 Cases.

BACKGROUND: The management of severe radiocapitellar joint pathologies in young patients is challenging. Radial head arthroplasty (RHA) is a treatment option in the adult population, but most surgeons avoid implementing it in younger patients, and there are no published results for patients younger than 16 years. METHODS: Our retrospective cohort describes 5 patients (4 male 1 female) who underwent cementless modular RHA at an average age of 14 years (range: 13 to 15). The preoperative diagnoses were post-traumatic radiocapitellar incongruity and arthrosis because of previous Salter-Harris ty

Health-related quality of life and visual function in retinoblastoma survivors with ocular prostheses: a cross-sectional study.

Retinoblastoma (RB) survivors who have undergone enucleation and use ocular prostheses may face long-term challenges related to visual function and overall well-being. This study aimed to evaluate health-related quality of life (HR-QoL) and visual function in this population, addressing a gap in knowledge regarding their lived experiences and functional vision. This cross-sectional study included 12 unilateral and 3 bilateral RB survivors (10 girls, 5 boys; mean age 15.5 years, range 6.8-26.5), all treated with unilaterally enucleation and an ocular prosthesis at Sahlgrenska University Hospita

[The recurrence of an atrial myxoma in a patient with a mechanical mitral prosthesis--apropos a case].

Recurrence of cardiac myxoma after surgery is an uncommon situation, particularly if a wide excision of the tissue under the tumour has been done. The authors report a case of a 54-year-old male presenting with a left atrial myxoma near the mitral valve, which had to be replaced by a mechanical prosthetic valve during the removal of the tumour. One year later, he was admitted to hospital with persistent fever, weight loss, and congestive heart failure. After a positive hemoculture, intravenous antibiotherapy was initiated, and twice modified because of relapsing fever. Six weeks later, he was

Breast masses in the augmentation mammaplasty patient: the role of ultrasound.

The detection and evaluation of breast parenchymal abnormalities in the presence of a radiodense implant are often difficult with standard techniques of physical examination and mammography. Breast lesions can be obscured on one or both views by the radiodense implant or concealed within the dense tissue at the prosthesis-breast tissue interface. We investigated the role of ultrasound as an adjunct to mammographic special views, including posterior displacement (Eklund et al.), in previously augmented patients who presented with a clinically palpable mass. The records of 125 consecutive breast

Proposing a novel technique to exclude the left ventricle with an assist device: insights from 4-dimensional flow magnetic resonance imaging.

OBJECTIVES: Left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation has become an effective treatment for end-stage heart failure patients. However, LVAD support disrupts the natural intracavitary blood flow path through the heart, introducing flow patterns potentially associated with thrombosis especially around the inflow cannula. We present initial insights into in vitro 4D flow magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based analysis of flow patterns and an enzyme-activated milk test in a porcine left ventricular (LV) model during LVAD support, in a standard implant technique and in combination with a n

[Experiences with the p-HEMA posterior chamber lens].

We reviewed about 120 p-HEMA intraocular lenses (IOL), which had been implanted during the last 2 years. Neither posterior synechia of the iris with the IOL occurred, nor could severe anterior chamber reactions be encountered. The clinical findings indicated excellent biocompatibility of the p-HEMA material. In some cases we found a moderate diffuse clouding of the IOL, which did not impair the visual acuity. In 21 eyes the IOL was decentered. The low mechanical stability as well as the few clinical experiences prevent the general use of the p-HEMA lens as a routine IOL in our clinic.

Optimizing electrical stimulation parameters to enhance visual cortex activation in retina degeneration rats.

In patients with degenerative retinal diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa and age-related macular degeneration, retinal prostheses offer a promising approach to restoring partial vision. Among these, epiretinal prostheses have shown encouraging preliminary clinical efficacy; however, optimizing stimulation parameters remains essential for improving efficiency and reducing power consumption. In this study, we investigated the effects of key electrical stimulation parameters- phase duration, frequency, and interphase interval (IPI) -on visual cortical electrically evoked potentials (EEPs) in b

Radiological and Clinical Follow-up of Alpha-D Cervical Disk Prosthesis.

BACKGROUND: Fusion surgery is applied to prevent segmental instability after surgery for cervical disk herniation. Motion-sparing surgeries have been developed to prevent adjacent segment disease after fusion surgery. Total disk replacement, one of these methods, has been applied in the cervical region for more than 20 years. We aimed to investigate the medium-term radiological and clinical outcomes of patients who had received Alpha-D disk prosthesis after cervical disk surgery, in terms of incidence of heterotopic ossification (HO) and other complications. METHODS: We included 33 patients (

Intracardiac echocardiography to diagnose pannus formation after aortic valve replacement.

A 66-year-old female, under regular follow-up for 20 years after aortic valve replacement (19-mm Carbomedics), presented dyspnea on effort and hypotension during hemodialysis. A transthoracic echocardiogram showed elevation of transvalvular velocity up to 4 m/s, but the structure around the aortic prosthesis was difficult to observe due to artifacts. Fluoroscopy revealed normal motion of the leaflets of the mechanical valve. Intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) revealed a pannus-like structure in the left ventricular outflow tract. Transesophageal echocardiogram also revealed this structure. IC

Concomitant achondroplasia and developmental dysplasia of the hip.

Achondroplasia (ACH) is the most common form of hereditary dwarfism and presents with multiple musculoskeletal anomalies but is not normally associated with premature hip arthritis. Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a spectrum of disease resulting in shallow acetabular depth and a propensity for chronic femoral subluxation or dislocation; it is among the most common causes of premature arthritis. This case report describes the diagnosis of symptomatic DDH in a patient with ACH and highlights difficulties of primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) as a treatment option. Intraoperative ra
