Effect of middle ear pathology on selected psychoeducational measures following surgical treatment.

24 children surgically treated for pathology of the middle ear and 24 matched control children having histories without problems with ears or school were compared on the Slosson Intelligence Test, Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test, the Block Design subtest of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Form R, the Spelling subtest of the Wide Range Achievement Test, the Spelling and Reading Recognition subtests of the Peabody Individual Achievement Test, and the Goldman-Fristoe-Woodcock Test of Auditory Discrimination. The surgical group scored similarly to the control children on six of the e…

[Unsolved problems in research on difficulties of lexical access: a programme for the future].

Difficulties of lexical retrieval are a complex syndrome which is hard to delimit. The syndrome implies an unexpected failure in word identification, access to meaning, pronunciation and spelling. It affects individuals with normal intelligence and interferes significantly with academic achievement and with everyday tasks that involve the ability to read. It is estimated that 4% of school age children in the USA suffer from it, compared to 2% in Spain. The chronic nature of dyslexia and the social and emotional problems that it brings about are of considerable concern to education professional

Efficacy of the Teaching Early Literacy and Language Curriculum With Preschoolers From Low-Income Families.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to test the efficacy of the Teaching Early Literacy and Language (TELL) curriculum package for improv … s on all code-related CBMs and two code-related distal measures as well as receptive and expressive vocabulary CBMs. No significant differences were found on distal measures of oral language/vocabulary or listening comprehension. CONCLUSIONS: Results of the present study, paired with findings from an earlier TELL RCT with children with developmental speech …

Language and academic outcomes of children with cochlear implants in an inclusive setting: Evidence from 18 years of data.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined outcomes in core and pragmatic language, receptive vocabulary, and academic skills in children with cochlear implants (CIs) enrolled in an inclusive educational setting. METHODS: Eighty-eight children with CIs were included in the analyses. Data was collected over an 18-year period, at six-month intervals for core language, vocabulary, and pragmatic skills and in kindergarten and second grade for academic skills. Kaplan-Meier analyses were used to estimate the median time to achieve age-appropriate scores. RESULTS: Results indicated the median time to obtain ag…

The role of readability in effective health communication: an experiment using a Japanese health information text on chronic suppurative otitis media.

OBJECTIVES: This study identifies the most significant readability factors and examines ways of improving and evaluating Japanese health information text in terms of ease of reading and understanding. METHODS: Six different Japanese texts were prepared based on an original short text written by a medical doctor for a hospital web site intended for laypersons regarding chronic suppurative otitis media. Four were revised for single readability factor (syntax, vocabulary, or text structure) and two were modified in all three factors. Using a web-based survey, 270 high school students read one of…

Bilingual children with nonsyndromic cleft lip and/or palate: language and memory skills.

PURPOSE: Research shows that monolingual children with cleft lip and/or palate (CLP) have a higher incidence of cognitive-linguistic deficits, but it is not clear whether bilingual preschool children with CLP are especially vulnerable because they need to acquire 2 languages. We tested the hypothesis that bilingual children with CLP score lower than bilingual children with typical development (TD) on receptive vocabulary, verbal memory, and visuospatial memory. METHOD: Participants were 86 bilingual CLP children and 100 TD children 3-6 years of age, dominant in English or Mandarin. Each child…

Expressive language skills in Finnish two-year-old extremely- and very-low-birth-weight preterm children.

OBJECTIVE: Preterm children with low birth weight are at greater risk of experiencing speech and language difficulties than full-term childr … orded in semistructured free-play sessions with their mothers. From these video samples, expressive vocabulary size and maximum sentence length (MSL) were analyzed. In addition, the possible effect of children's gender on language measures as well as associations between different language measures were examined. RESULTS: The results showed that there was n …

Verbal working memory and story retelling in school-age children with autism.

PURPOSE: This study examined verbal working memory and language ability in 15 school-age children with autism using 3 verbal working memory … 3 verbal memory tasks was independent of articulation ability. For the group with autism, receptive vocabulary was associated with sentence imitation and story recall but not with nonword repetition or digits span. Sentence imitation was related to story recall, but the relationship disappeared when the effect of vocabulary was removed. CONCLUSIONS: Vocabul …

Flexible use of conserved motifs constrains genome access in cell type evolution.

Cell types can be organized into related families, but the regulatory mechanisms that define and maintain these families across deep evolutionary time remain unknown. Here, combining single-nucleus multi-omic sequencing with deep learning to analyse the accessible genomes of two groups of vastly divergent animals including flatworms and vertebrates, we find that hundreds of accessibility-dictating sequence motifs partition into distinct yet conserved sets, or 'vocabularies', each associated with a specific cell type family. However, combinatorial relationships among these motifs preferred by i

Comprehension and production of English plural morphology by school-age deaf and hard-of-hearing children.

Deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) preschoolers have difficulty comprehending and producing English plural morphology. This study investigated t … ome morphophonological contexts proved challenging for both groups. Performance was correlated with vocabulary size. This suggests that, if DHH children have sufficient vocabulary, they may perform like primary school NH peers in plural comprehension and production.

Development of literacy skills for Japanese deaf and hard-of-hearing children.

We compared the reading development of 77 deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) Japanese children, aged 5-7 (40 females), with 139 of their hearing peers (74 females) in 2018. We assessed each group's phonological awareness (PA), grammar, vocabulary, and reading of hiragana (Japanese orthography children learn first). DHH children showed significant delays in grammar and vocabulary but only a slight delay in PA. Younger DHH children scored better than their hearing peers in reading. Although PA predicted reading for hearing children, reading predicted PA for DHH children. PA partially explained gramm…

WAIS characteristics of non-pathological obsessive and hysteric styles.

Tested traditional clinical hypotheses about the cognitive functioning of individuals (N = 16) with an obsessive or an hysteric style in a non-pathological population using selected subtests of the WAIS. Individuals identified as having an obsessive style displayed the predicted patterns (Information and Vocabulary greater than Comprehension), while their hysteric counterparts displayed only a trend toward certain predicted patterns (Comprehension greater than Information and Vocabulary). Predicted between-group differences were significant. Higher base rates of obsessive features in a college…

The effects of vestibular dysfunction on balance and self-concept in children with cochlear implants.

OBJECTIVES: Children with cochlear implants (CCI) have an increased rate of vestibular dysfunction. Vestibular dysfunction is associated with decreased balance and dynamic visual acuity ability. Hearing loss alone is associated with reduced speech perception and vocabulary in children. In adults, vestibular dysfunction is associated with reduced quality of life; however, similar relationships have not been studied in children with vestibular dysfunction. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of hearing loss and vestibular dysfunction on self-concept in CCI (n…

Brief Report: Speech and Language Therapy in Children with ASD in an Aquatic Environment: the ASLT (Aquatic Speech and Language Therapy) Program.

Our findings show that ASLT results in significantly greater improvement of vocabulary measures, thus providing direct evidence of water-based intervention's beneficial effects on language skills in ASD.
