[Speech intelligibility in noise at presbycusis].

Evaluation of speech recognition is possible by presenting testing material in sentence form with presence of competitive noise. We developed new test of sentence intelligibility in noise in the Czech language. This article demonstrates results of the influence of the babble noise on sentence intelligibility in hearing impaired listeners with presbycusis. The time characteristics of babble noise are similar to human voice. That is the reason why this noise masking is more enhanced at the central hearing level than any other noise masking. A group of 423 persons was divided into younger group (

Influence of phonetic context on the dysphonic event: contribution of new methodologies for the analysis of pathological voice.

Widely studied in terms of perception, acoustics or aerodynamics, dysphonia stays nevertheless a speech phenomenon, closely related to the phonetic composition of the message conveyed by the voice. In this paper, we present a series of three works with the aim to understand the implications of the phonetic manifestation of dysphonia. Our first study proposes a new approach to the perceptual analysis of dysphonia (the phonetic labeling), which principle is to listen and evaluate each phoneme in a sentence separately. This study confirms the hypothesis of Laver that the dysphonia is not a consta

Auditory signal processing in communication: perception and performance of vocal sounds.

Learning and maintaining the sounds we use in vocal communication require accurate perception of the sounds we hear performed by others and feedback-dependent imitation of those sounds to produce our own vocalizations. Understanding how the central nervous system integrates auditory and vocal-motor information to enable communication is a fundamental goal of systems neuroscience, and insights into the mechanisms of those processes will profoundly enhance clinical therapies for communication disorders. Gaining the high-resolution insight necessary to define the circuits and cellular mechanisms

Hyperhomocysteinemia induced locked-in syndrome in a young adult due to folic acid deficiency.

'Locked-in syndrome (LIS)' is a neurological disorder, often missed initially and can have grave consequences. A rare case of LIS caused due to folic acid deficiency-induced hyperhomocysteinemia is being described here. A 16-year-old boy presented with complaints of sudden onset weakness of all the four limbs with loss of voice for one day. All the tendon reflexes were increased, bilateral planters were extensor and sensory system was intact. Patient was conscious and responded to verbal commands by ocular movements in vertical direction. Hence, a diagnosis of LIS was made. Magnetic resonance

The Characteristics of Intelligence Profile and Eye Gaze in Facial Emotion Recognition in Mild and Moderate Preschoolers With Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Childhood autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can easily be misdiagnosed, due to the nonspecific social and communicational deficits associated with the disorder. The present study attempted to profile the mental development and visual attention toward emotion among preschool children with mild or moderate ASD who were attending mainstream kindergartens. A total of 21 children (17 boys and 4 girls) diagnosed with mild or moderate ASD selected from 5,178 kindergarteners from the Xi'an city were recruited. Another group of 21 typically developing (TD) children who were matched with age, gender, and c

Memory Monitoring Recognition Test (MMRT), a new measurement of stimular source monitoring: Software and comprehension.

BACKGROUND: Reality monitoring allows the evaluation and monitoring of reality through the assignment of information to internal or external sources, which is crucial to differentiate real events from imaginary ones. In schizophrenics, monitoring seems to be related to an error in the allocation processes, giving rise to false perceptions such as visual hallucinations, which are associated with a poor prognosis. This error can appear almost imperceptibly at an early age in life, making carrying out predictive or evaluation tests with paper and pencil unattractive. The computerization of techni

The auditory environment drives superior temporal sulcus depth in the neonatal period.

Premature birth impacts the development of superior temporal brain regions, including the superior temporal sulcus (STS), a key cortical area for language, voice recognition, and music processing. Using three distinct newborn imaging datasets, we examined the impact of premature birth on STS morphology at term-equivalent age. In the large cohort of the Developing Human Connectome Project (dHCP), we observed a linear relationship between gestational age at birth and STS depth, with earlier birth associated with a shallower STS. We hypothesized that this effect may have resulted from reduced str…

Thyroid B-Cell Lymphoma in the Background of Hashimoto's Thyroiditis: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Primary thyroid lymphoma (PTL) is a rare type of thyroid cancer, comprising less than 5% of all thyroid cancer cases. PTL includes subtypes like diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma (MALT). The connection between PTL and autoimmune diseases of the thyroid, particularly Hashimoto's thyroiditis, has gained recognition in recent years. Studies have indicated an increased incidence of PTL among individuals with Hashimoto's thyroiditis. However, effectively recognizing and managing PTL in the context of autoimmune thyroid diseases remains challenging.

Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) and COVID-19 Pandemic in Africa: Special Focus on Control Strategies.

Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) are a group of twenty (20) chronic, communicable, infectious diseases endemic to the tropics and sub-tropics climate countries, which are intimately associated with poverty, poor sanitation, limited clean water, and healthcare delivery; and dwellers live in proximity to pathogens and diseases vectors. The pathogens are protozoans, bacteria, helminths, fungi, and viruses. NTDs currently affect about one billion people globally, out of which 500 million are Africans living in rural settlements with low political voice and support. In recent years, NTDs have rec

The role of androgens in women's health and wellbeing.

Androgens in women, as well as in men, are intrinsic to maintenance of (i) reproductive competency, (ii) cardiac health, (iii) appropriate bone remodeling and mass retention, (iii) muscle tone and mass, and (iv) brain function, in part, through their mitigation of neurodegenerative disease effects. In recognition of the pluripotency of endogenous androgens, exogenous androgens, and selected congeners, have been prescribed off-label for several decades to treat low libido and sexual dysfunction in menopausal women, as well as, to improve physical performance. However, long-term safety and effic

Automated cleft speech evaluation using speech recognition.

Perceptual evaluation remains the gold-standard evaluation of cleft speech, but with any human interpretation, there can be bias. Eliminating bias, allowing comparison of speech data between units, is labor and time intensive. Globally, there is a shortage of listeners. We have developed a computer learning system to evaluate cleft speech. Our automated cleft speech evaluator interprets resonance and articulatory cleft speech errors. Speech recognition engines typically ignore voice characteristics and speech errors of the speaker, but in cleft speech evaluation, these features are paramount.

Post-intubation subglottic stenosis in children. Diagnosis, treatment and prevention of moderate and severe stenosis.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Subglottic stenosis is one of the most common causes of upper airway obstruction. Almost 90% of them result from endotracheal intubation. Therapy depends on the degree of stenosis, among other factors. Therapeutic approaches range from watchful waiting, in mild stenosis, to complex surgery for severe cases. We report our experience on the surgical management of post-intubation subglottic stenosis in children, emphasising the need for recognition and prevention of predisposing factors of post-intubation stenosis. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 71 patients wi

40 Hz auditory steady state response to linguistic features of stimuli during auditory hallucinations.

The auditory steady state response (ASSR) may reflect activity from different regions of the brain, depending on the modulation frequency used. In general, responses induced by low rates (≤40 Hz) emanate mostly from central structures of the brain, and responses from high rates (≥80 Hz) emanate mostly from the peripheral auditory nerve or brainstem structures. Besides, it was reported that the gamma band ASSR (30-90 Hz) played an important role in working memory, speech understanding and recognition. This paper investigated the 40 Hz ASSR evoked by modulated speech and reversed speech. The spe
