The impacts of extreme weather events on health services and systems: A systematic review of reviews.

OBJECTIVES: Beyond health impacts, Extreme Weather Events (EWEs) disrupt health services and systems, an aspect often overlooked in favour o … lished in the past 10 years. We evaluated the impact of floods, storms, heatwaves, cold spells, and wildfires on different components, from pre-hospital care to primary care and pharmacies. Results were thematically analysed to categorise impacts by hazard type, affected component, and impact type. RESULTS: A total of 114 reviews were included, detailing E …

Impact of the Climate Crisis on Childhood Health.

As climate change accelerates, pediatricians are increasingly confronted with its impact on child health. Rising global temperatures, shifting precipitation patterns, and intensifying extreme weather events pose urgent and growing threats to the physical and mental well-being of children. Children are vulnerable to heat-related illnesses and mortality as heat waves become more frequent and severe. Flooding and displacement from tropical storms and hurricanes lead to trauma, disruption of care, and increased risk of respiratory and mental health conditions. Declining air quality from wildfires …

Fire risk to structures in California's Wildland-Urban Interface.

The destructive impacts of wildfires on people, property and the environment have dramatically increased, especially in the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) in California. In these areas structures are threatened by both approaching flames and lofted embers which spread fire into and within communities. While independent factors influencing structure fire protection are well known, their combined effects remain largely unquantified, limiting the accuracy of risk assessments and mitigation strategies. Here, we examine five major historical WUI fires-2017 Tubbs, 2017 Thomas, 2018 Camp, 2019 Kincad…

Assessment of forest fire emissions in Uttarakhand State, India, using Open Geospatial data and Google Earth Engine.

In the recent past, forest fires have increased due to the changing climate pattern. It is necessary to analyse and quantify various gaseous emissions so as to mitigate their harmful effects on air pollution. Satellite remote sensing data provides an opportunity to study the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The multispectral sensor of the Tropospheric Monitoring Instrument (Sentinel-5) is capable of recording the reflectance of wavelengths vital for measuring the atmospheric concentrations of methane, formaldehyde, aerosol, carbon monoxide, etc., at a spatial resolution of 0.01°. The presen

N2O5 reactive uptake kinetics and chlorine activation on authentic biomass-burning aerosol.

We examined the reactive uptake of dinitrogen pentoxide (N2O5) to authentic biomass-burning aerosol (BBA) using a small chamber reservoir in combination with an entrained aerosol flow tube. BBA was generated from four different fuel types and the reactivity of N2O5 was probed from 30 to 70% relative humidity (RH). The N2O5 reactive uptake coefficient, γ(N2O5), depended upon RH, fuel type, and to a lesser degree on aerosol chloride mass fractions. The γ(N2O5) ranged from 2.0 (±0.4) ×10-3 on black needlerush derived BBA at 30% RH to 6.0 (±0.6) ×10-3 on wiregrass derived BBA at 65% RH. Major N2O5

Burned habitats facilitate predation and lead to long-term reductions in prey success.

Intensifying wildfire regimes under global change are expected to shift species interactions through changes in habitat structure and composition, vegetation productivity, and sensory cues. Yet there is little evidence of how burn-induced changes in habitat composition and structure modify predator-prey relationships. We investigated how wildfires influence relationships between mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) and cougars (Puma concolor) in the US Intermountain West using high-resolution telemetry data, kill site locations, and annual measures of mule deer fawn production. Burned habitats expe…

Discrepant Global Surface Ozone Responses to Emission- and Heatwave-Induced Regime Shifts.

Heatwaves have substantial but poorly quantified impacts on surface ozone photochemical regimes. As heatwaves of increasing severity occur, communities face more serious exposure to ozone, necessitating a more comprehensive understanding of the impact of heatwaves on the nonlinear response of ozone to its precursors for guiding policies in emission reductions. Here we estimate the spatiotemporal evolution of global ozone chemistry based on machine learning and in situ observations and show that emission changes and heatwaves alter ozone photochemical regimes, leading to diverse ozone changes a

What influences Hg uptake and movement in tree rings?

Tree rings are useful archives of local source mercury (Hg) emissions and regional/global trends in atmospheric elemental mercury (Hg0) concentrations. Archives that record trends in atmospheric Hg deposition include sediment, peat, and ice cores. Despite the fact these archives record different processes, trends in Hg concentrations compare favorably. High temperatures and relative humidity, water vapor deficit, and low soil moisture can decrease atmospheric Hg0 uptake by foliage, and thus, reduce Hg uptake into tree rings formed under those conditions. Soil nitrogen promotes Hg0 uptake in le

Nitrogen dynamics 35 years after stand-replacing fire: Aboveground pools grow as surface soil pools remain unchanged.

Natural disturbances induce variable recovery pathways, and long-term studies are key to understanding how that variability affects ecosystem function over time and across space. In subalpine forests, high-severity wildfires produce high variability in postfire tree density, but how this variability relates to nitrogen (N) cycling remains unclear. We resampled lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta var. latifolia) stands 35 years after stand-replacing fire and asked (1) how N concentrations, pools, and mineralization changed with increasing lodgepole pine biomass from 15 to 35 years postfire; (2) how …

From global burned-area products to higher-resolution regional forest fire monitoring: a Landsat-based machine-learning reconstruction for northern Moroccan forests.

Wildfires are a major disturbance in Mediterranean forests, yet long-term burned-area accounting remains uncertain in fragmented landscapes where coarse-resolution global products may smooth burn perimeters and miss small scars. This study presents a forest-constrained regional reconstruction of annual forest burned area at 30 m resolution for northern Morocco over 1984-2025, excluding 2012, using the Landsat archive, spectral change metrics, and supervised machine learning. Annual mapping was constrained by Landsat-derived forest-domain masks anchored to an official 2018 forest inventory. Bur…

Climatic and Hydrological Changes Drive Contemporary Fire Regime Transitions in the World's Largest Wetland.

Tropical wetlands have historically been resilient to fire, but ongoing climate and hydrological changes are undermining this stability. Here, we provide robust multi-decadal evidence (1985-2024) of structural changes in the contemporary fire regime of the Pantanal, the world's largest wetland, associated with hydroclimatic disruption. We investigated changes in burned area, mean fire size, and fire seasonality using hydrological, climatic, and fuel-condition predictors. To identify the major drivers of fire dynamics, we applied trend analyses and Elastic Net models across multiple temporal an

Prognostic factors in bushfire-affected koalas-Kangaroo Island bushfire response 2020.

This study presents a retrospective analysis of clinical records data from koalas presenting for treatment following the large-scale bushfire event on Kangaroo Island 2019-2020. The aim of the study was to identify prognostic factors for koalas affected by bushfire. Koalas (n = 199) were grouped based on their burn status in combination with their burn bandaging requirement at triage; those with no burns, with burns that did not require bandaging and with burns that did require bandaging. Overall, 59.8% of koalas had positive outcomes, but this reduced to only 13% of koalas in the most severel

A novel controlled wood smoke exposure model to evaluate physiological responses to smoke-derived air pollution in dairy calves.

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) from wildfire smoke is a major air pollutant in dairy-producing regions of the United States. However, knowledge of direct causative effects of wildfire-derived pollutants on calf health is lacking because of a reliance on observational studies from natural wildfire smoke exposures. Calves represent an important population in a dairy herd and improving their health is especially critical during the vulnerable pre-weaning window, as respiratory diseases during this period can affect performance later in life. The objective of this study was to evaluate the acute

Anticipating El Niño-related health risks in Latin America and the Caribbean: from climate information to public health preparedness.

El Niño is a recurrent mode of tropical Pacific climate variability with major public health implications for Latin America and the Caribbean. Its development is partly driven by the Bjerknes feedback, a coupled ocean-atmosphere process in which weakened equatorial trade winds reduce coastal upwelling and allow warm surface waters to shift eastward. Warming of the central and eastern tropical Pacific can reshape regional rainfall and temperature patterns, increasing the likelihood of floods, droughts, wildfires, food-system disruption, and health-service interruption in locations with establis…

Systemic immunological responses are dependent on sex and ovarian hormone presence following acute inhaled woodsmoke exposure.

BACKGROUND: Rural regions of the western United States have experienced a noticeable surge in both the frequency and severity of acute wildfire events, which brings significant challenges to both public safety and environmental conservation efforts, with impacts felt globally. Identifying factors contributing to immune dysfunction, including endocrinological phenotypes, is essential to understanding how hormones may influence toxicological susceptibility. METHODS: This exploratory study utilized male and female C57BL/6 mice as in vivo models to investigate distinct responses to acute woodsmok

Overview of Climate Change, Pollution, and Sustainability in the Rheumatic and Autoimmune Diseases.

Most rheumatic and autoimmune diseases evolve over years from gene-environment interactions. Here, we consider the roles of climate change and pollution in this process and how we can minimize disease risks, enhance prevention, and promote sustainable activities to combat environmental degradation. The warming planet-with resultant increased heat effects, extreme weather events, wildfires, ultraviolet radiation, vector borne and zoonotic diseases, psychosocial stress, and pollution of water, food, and air-is likely increasing the rates and severity of these diseases. More research and coordina…
