Biodegradable food packaging is sustainable and has a great application prospect. PLA is a promising alternative for petroleum-derived polymers. However, PLA packaging suffers from poor barrier properties compared with petroleum-derived ones. To address this issue, we designed bilayer films based on PLA and Pickering emulsions. The aim of this study is to assess the long-term results of Ethibloc injection in aneurysmal bone cysts (ABC). Thirty-three patients with ABC were treated with computed tomography-guided percutaneous injection of Ethibloc into the cyst cavity. Twenty-two patients had Ethibloc injection as primary treatment and 11 patients had presented to us with recurrence after previous procedures including steroid injection, bone marrow injection, curettage bone grafting and various other surgical procedures. Between November 1983 and July 1988 28 patients with haemoptysis were treated by transcatheter embolisation. Clinical follow-up of 22 patients revealed that 5 patients rebled within 21 days after embolization. Haemoptysis ceased completely in the remaining 17 patients. However, 2 patients rebled after 4 and 12 months, respectively. We observed two transient spinal cord injuries, most likely related to spinal cord ischaemia. PURPOSE: To assess the efficacy and long-term results of Ethibloc treatment in aneurysmal bone cysts (ABC).
METHODS: Thirteen patients with ABC were treated with direct percutaneous Ethibloc injection. Four patients had only one injection and the other nine patients from two to four injections. No severe complications were observed; in two patients a local leakage of Ethibloc from the cyst into the soft tissues occurred but it was temporary and the consequent inflammation self-healed without residua and sequelae. A 4-year-old boy developed progressive neck pain and an expansile osteogenic lesion of C2; the diagnosis was an aneurysmal bone cyst. An image-guided biopsy with 3D CT planning was performed followed by Ethibloc injection into the aneurysmal bone cyst. Subsequent CT and MR images demonstrated embolization material in the vertebrobasilar system, and the patient died of brain stem and cerebellar infarction 23 hours after the intervention. The course of events and technical considerations are discussed.
