[Serum zinc and copper in hypercholesterolemia].

For some authors, absolute or relative copper deficiency, with an elevated plasmatic zinc/copper ratio, could be a risk factor in the etiology of cardiovascular diseases by altering lipid metabolism. Animal or human studies carried out with zinc and/or copper supplemented or deficient diets on biochemical lipid parameters, led to inconsistent results. Nevertheless, no study was already done in hypercholesterolemic patients, concerning possible correlation between serum levels of these trace elements and cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and apolipoprotein B blood levels. 67 patients were distribute…

Zinc and the central nervous system.

The effect of zinc nutriture and metabolism on brain function has been reviewed. Zinc nutriture and its effect on the concentration and metabolism of essential elements (e.g. zinc, copper, manganese, magnesium, sodium, potassium and calcium) and on the concentration and metabolism of toxic elements (e.g. aluminum and lead) are discussed in relationship to brain function. In addition, possible interrelationships between zinc nutriture and metabolism and its effect on a number of diseases including acrodermatitis enteropathica, Pick's disease, Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia, fifth day fits, …

Copper and zinc in pre-eclampsia.

Twenty uncomplicated pregnancies, 10 parturients with mild and 10 parturients with severe pre-eclampsia, all with uncomplicated deliveries, were studied. Maternal and umbilical cord serum were checked for copper and zinc by the proton-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) method; maternal serum protein, hemoglobin and estriol were determined as well. Maternal zinc and copper values were lower, whereas the umbilical cord serum copper level was higher in the group with severe pre-eclampsia as compared with the controls. Maternal zinc was also lower in mild pre-eclampsia than in the controls. The possibl…

Interactions of zinc and arachidonic acid.

To probe the interaction of zinc with polyunsaturated fatty acids we have studied the effect of zinc on the cooxygenation of ferrous iron and arachidonic acid. Zinc inhibited the process of cooxygenation in a concentration dependent fashion. Further evaluation of the interaction of zinc and arachidonic acid gave spectroscopic evidence that zinc, oxygen and arachidonic acid can form an unstable hydroperoxide-like complex similar to that postulated earlier for iron, oxygen and arachidonic acid. However, in the case of zinc the complex will not proceed further to form stable peroxides and the uns…

Vitamin A and zinc metabolism in alcoholism.

Vitamin A and zinc metabolism are affected both by ethanol and by hepatic cirrhosis. Ethanol causes abnormal dark adaptation by acting as a competitive inhibitor with retinol for alcohol dehydrogenase in the eye. In animals oral ethanol intake results in increased losses of zinc by the urinary and fecal routes. Vitamin A malnutrition in cirrhotics may be caused by poor diet, malabsorption, decreased hepatic vitamin A uptake, and decreased hepatic storage capacity for vitamin A. In some cirrhotic patients zinc deficiency and or protein deficiency may limit the ability to respond to vitamin A. C…

Concentration of zinc in the hair of schoolchildren.

The concentration of zinc in the hair of 219 schoolchildren aged between 10 and 11 years was measured and related to height, weight, estimates of consumption of zinc-rich foods, number of children living at home, and rank in family. None of the correlation coefficients between hair zinc and the other variables was significant. Mean concentration of zinc was higher (P less than 0.001) in the girls (146 microgram/g; 2.23 mumol/g) than in the boys (118 microgram/g; 1.81 mumol/g). Eight children (3.7% of the total) had less than 75 microgram/g (less than 1.15 mumol/g) zinc in their hair but only o…

Diets deficient in copper and zinc?

Hospital diets, and, perhaps, diets in general may be low in copper and zinc, with the diets being lower in copper than zinc in comparison to requirements. Several human diseases or pathologic conditions of unknown etiology have similarities to findings in deficient animals. Thus nutritional status and metabolism of copper may be important in anemia, ischemic heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, multiple sclerosis and seborrheic dermatitis. Zinc may be involved in growth failure, acne, difficulties of labor, congenital abnormalities and wound healing. Whether or not dietary amoun…
