A 25-year-old man presented with decreased vision in both eyes, approximately 4 years following bilateral bright ocular cosmetic iris implantation. On examination, he was found to have bilateral elevated intraocular pressures, anterior chamber cells and flare, chronic peripheral anterior synechiae and significantly reduced endothelial cell counts. PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine the proportion of patients requiring alteration in management based on the findings of the day-1 postoperative visit after pars plana vitrectomy, and to identify clinical characteristics that predict the need for unexpected intervention.

BACKGROUND: In order to minimise postoperative intraocular pressure (IOP) rise, after routine uncomplicated cataract surgery, prophylaxis may be adopted. Currently, there are no specific guidelines in this regard resulting in wide variation in practice across the UK. We sought to document these variations through a questionnaire survey.

Renal reabsorption of bicarbonate was studied in Merino ewes during carbonic anhydrase inhibition. Bicarbonate reabsorption was directly proportional to plasma bicarbonate concentration. No tubular maximum for bicarbonate was demonstrated. Elevation of arterial PCO2 or depression of arterial pH caused slight increases in bicarbonate reabsorption. Five sulfonamide inhibitors of carbonic anhydrase inhibited parathyroid hormone-induced resorption of bone in organ culture. The relative activities of the sulfonamides as resorption inhibitors were such as to suggest the presence of a functional carbonic anhydrase system in bone linked to the mechanism of bone resorption.
