A comparative crossover study on the treatment of heartburn and epigastric pain: Liquid Gaviscon and a magnesium--aluminium antacid gel.

Forty-four patients with symptoms of gastro-oesophageal reflux were randomly assigned in a crossover trial to treatment for 15-day periods with Liquid Gaviscon (a reflux suppressant) or an antacid gel containing magnesium and aluminium hydroxide. Good relief of symptoms was reported by 84% of patients during therapy with Liquid Gaviscon compared to only 23% during antacid therapy. Relief of symptoms was obtained within 15 minutes by 68% of patients during therapy with Liquid Gaviscon compared to only 9% during antacid treatment. The beneficial effect lasted for more than 4 hours in 75% of pati

Localized microenvironment-modulating AgQ@GSC hydrogel microneedles for transdermal acne therapy.

Acne vulgaris is driven by Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) colonization, oxidative stress, and inflammatory dysregulation within the pilosebaceous unit, while effective topical therapy is limited by the stratum corneum barrier and short residence time on the skin surface. Herein, we developed AgQ@GSC-MNs, an electron-beam-crosslinked hydrogel microneedle (MN) platform composed of gelatin, sodium alginate, and carboxymethyl chitosan (GSC) for co-delivery of silver nanoparticles and quercetin nanocrystals. The quercetin nanocrystals showed a mean hydrodynamic diameter of 74.1 ± 9.81 nm, and t

A living hydrogel platform for wireless light-controlled microbial therapy in the stomach.

Engineered microbial therapies provide a promising strategy for in situ production of therapeutic molecules at disease sites; however, their clinical translation remains limited by insufficient retention at target tissues and the lack of external control after administration. Here, we develop a wearable bioelectronic-assisted living hydrogel platform that enables rapid in situ immobilization and remote regulation of engineered bacteria. Optogenetically engineered bacteria capable of green-light-induced anti-interleukin-6 (anti-IL-6) secretion were encapsulated within a photoresponsive Gelatin

Apparent weight loss and surface modification of household waste-derived mixed PE/PP microplastics by Bacillus pumilus and fungal isolates.

Microplastics are persistent contaminants of terrestrial and aquatic environments, creating a need for carefully validated remediation approaches. This laboratory study examined apparent weight loss and surface modification of household waste-derived mixed polyethylene/polypropylene (PE/PP) microplastics by Bacillus pumilus, Aspergillus niger, and Trichoderma harzianum. The isolates were incubated separately in carbon-deficient mineral salt medium containing microplastics as the only added carbon source. Apparent gravimetric weight loss, microbial growth, and pH were assessed, and Bacillus pum

[Bioactive components of holothurians: Molecular bases and mechanisms of geroprotective action.].

Modern gerontology views aging as a plastic process, opening opportunities for its modulation through nutritional and pharmacological interventions. This review focuses on a comprehensive analysis of a unique marine biological source - holothurian (sea cucumber) tissues - considered as a promising multicomponent basis for the development of novel geroprotective agents. Key bioactive compounds, primarily isolated from the body wall, are examined in detail: low-molecular-weight matrikine peptides and a unique spectrum of triterpene glycosides. Their ability for synergistic, multitargeted action

Fast and versatile ice-template-assisted photocrosslinking of methacryloylated gelatin-based nanofiber sponges for regenerative wound healing.

Nanofiber sponges have emerged as promising materials for regenerative wound healing, yet their fabrication remains constrained by the use of conventional chemical crosslinkers. Herein, we report a fast ice-template-assisted photocrosslinking (ITAP) strategy for constructing methacryloylated gelatin (GelMA)-based nanofiber sponges. By coupling ice templating with photocrosslinking, this strategy drives the preferential enrichment and in situ fixation of a small amount of GelMA around nanofiber junctions, thereby enabling effective bonding between fibers while preserving the highly porous fibro

Evaluation of the Potential of a Fast-Curing Polymer Bioadhesive Hydrogel for Corneal Defect Repair.

Corneal defects are a major cause of vision loss and require rapid, biocompatible, and effective sealing methods to restore ocular integrity and prevent infection. Current clinical adhesives, such as cyanoacrylate and fibrin glue, are limited by problems such as poor biocompatibility and inadequate stability. This study presents the design and evaluation of a fast-curable polymer bioadhesive hydrogel, a corneal glue formulated for efficient sealing of corneal defects. Hydrogels were synthesized from natural and synthetic polymers, including polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), sodium alginate (SA), and ca

Gel Foam Loaded with Oxygen-Consuming Bacterial Communities for the Coupled Inhibition of Lignite Spontaneous Combustion.

To improve the durability of microbial inhibition of coal spontaneous combustion, oxygen-consuming bacterial communities from mining environments were immobilized in gel foam to construct a bioactive carrier for lignite protection. Two previously screened aerobic communities, D2 and D3, were loaded into four candidate gel-foam systems and evaluated in terms of carrier stability, water retention, bacterial compatibility, and functional retention. The sodium alginate-based Y1 formulation exhibited the best overall carrier performance and maintained sustained microbial oxygen consumption. Importa

Bioinspired Interfacial Hitchhiking: 3D Hierarchical Nanopesticide Aggregates via Heterointerface-Confined Coassembly for Spatiotemporal Foliar Deposition and Translocation In Vivo.

Efficient foliar delivery of agrochemicals requires precise spatiotemporal control over both foliar deposition and translocation in vivo. Drawing inspiration from natural systems, such as biomolecular recognition and vesicular transport across cellular membranes, the work proposes a heterointerface-confined coassembly (HICA) strategy that leverages emulsion interfaces to construct programmable three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical nanopesticide aggregates, thereby substantially enhancing the bioavailability and efficacy of active ingredients (AIs). At the molecular level, π-π stacking between a

A photoinitiated catalytic self-degrading composite material for efficient and stable Cu(II) directional adsorption was constructed based on the bridging synergy strategy.

The rapid development of industry has led to increasingly serious copper ion pollution caused by the discharge of copper-containing wastewater. Traditional adsorption materials have the risk of secondary pollution due to the fact that directional adsorption is easily disturbed, and the bonding stability is poor. This study uses sulfamic acid to modify polyvinyl alcohol/sodium alginate composite material (SPS). The aim is to construct a multiple cross-linked system to enhance the confinement effect and improve the selective adsorption capacity for Cu(II). Meanwhile, a sulfur source is introduce

Systematic characterization and mechanistic insights into ultrasonically actuated sharp-tip capillary droplet generation.

Ultrasonically actuated sharp-tip capillary droplet generation offers a chip-free approach to produce microdroplets for applications such as micro-/nanoparticle synthesis and biochemical analysis, eliminating the need for complex microfluidic fabrication and bulky pumping systems. This method exploits the synergy between acoustically driven centrifugal pumping and acoustic streaming for on-demand droplet formation. Despite its promise, a thorough understanding of how key parameters influence droplet dynamics has remained elusive, hindering further optimization and broader adoption. Here, we pr

Enzymatically triggered glucose-releasing scaffolds as nutritional supports for millimeter-scale tissue engineering.

Construction of millimeter-sized tissues to mimic real human tissue or organ is still challenging, as oxygen and nutrients have a diffusion limit of only 100-200 μm from blood vessels. Almost all mammalian cells except red blood cells and platelets need a glucose supply to support their metabolic activities and functions. Inspired by the properties of blood vessels, we developed an alginate scaffold that is capable to release glucose by hydrolysis of glycogen via enzymes such as amyloglucosidase in this study. The scaffold can be flexibly shaped into glucose-releasing capsules (Glc-RCs) and gl

Lactate-Weaponized Microspheres Amplify IL-2-Driven Immuno-Embolization for Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

The acidic and immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME) remarkably hampers the therapeutic efficacy of transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Herein, uniform CaCO3 nanoparticles encapsulated nickel-alginate microspheres (CaNPs/Ni-Alg MSs) were engineered using a microfluidic device, serving as an immune-regulated embolic agent to amplify TAE treatment of HCC. CaNPs/Ni-Alg MSs could adsorb His-tagged interleukin-2 (IL-2) and enable sustained release through coordination interactions between the His-tag and Ni2 +, thereby reducing systemic cytokine el

Plant cytokinin ortho-topolin riboside suppresses the proliferation of multiple myeloma cells by promoting β-catenin degradation.

The shift to the circular economy has led to the use of plant-based functional ingredients in sustainable food packaging. Renewable, biodegradable, and non-toxic polysaccharides, proteins, lipids, and biopolymers include alginate, chitosan, starch, cellulose, pectin, soy protein, and polylactic acid (PLA). Hydrophobization gives antibacterial, antioxidant, UV-protective, and pH-responsive properties. Lignin is an antioxidant, antibacterial, and UV-blocking filler. A blend of carboxymethyl chitosan and soy protein isolate has almost 100% antimicrobial effects against Escherichia coli (E. coli)

Programming Hydrogel Mechanics via Sequence-Controlled Polymerization Using Peptide Self-Assembly.

Hydrogels often have poor mechanical properties due to their high water content and low polymer concentration, which limits their utility in applications that require them to withstand applied forces. Inspired by natural biopolymers such as collagen and actin, which form highly extended fibrillar networks that stiffen biological tissues, we developed a modular strategy that utilizes self-assembling peptides to direct the formation of covalently polymerized diacetylene networks in hydrogels. By systematically tuning peptide sequences, we precisely controlled the supramolecular organization and

Biological Impact of Extrusion Bioprinting Nasoseptal Chondrocytes for Tissue Engineering Applications.

Shear stress is a significant consideration in 3D bioprinting systems, with implications for cell viability and behaviour. This study hypothesised that relevant levels of shear stress would be generated during the process of 3D bioprinting human nasoseptal chondrocytes in a nanocellulose alginate bioink, with implications for cell viability and chondrogenic gene expression. Through a combined approach of in silico modelling and in vitro testing, we assessed chondrocyte viability and gene expression immediately within the first 72 h post-printing. Cell viability was determined using live-dead,

Ionic Liquid-Integrated Interpenetrating Polymer Hydrogel for Injectable, Self-Healing, and Stimuli-Responsive Co-Delivery of Protein and Chemotherapeutic Agents in Breast Cancer Therapy.

Due to poor drug solubility, protein instability, and inefficient carrier systems, the co-delivery of chemotherapeutics and proteins remains a critical challenge in cancer therapy. To address these limitations, we developed a stimuli-responsive, multifunctional polymeric hydrogel by incorporating biocompatible choline-lineolate ([Cho][Lin]) ionic liquid into a sodium alginate (SA) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix for enhanced co-delivery of doxorubicin (DOX) and zein in localized breast cancer treatment. Small-angle neutron scattering suggested the aggregation behavior of [Cho][Lin] and conf
