Women's health and maternal care services: seizing missed opportunities to prevent and manage preterm birth.

PROGRESS: The past ten years have seen uneven developments in women's and adolescents' health and reproductive rights. Globally, reductions of maternal and neonatal mortality rates and adolescent birth rates have been achieved along with improvements in coverage of key reproductive and maternal health services. However, preterm birth rates have not changed significantly. There is still large variation in these rates across the world, with the highest rates occurring in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. PROGRAMMATIC PRIORITIES: Effective interventions based on current clinical guidelines are

A core outcome set for maternal and neonatal health research and surveillance of emerging and ongoing epidemic threats (MNH-EPI-COS): a modified Delphi-based international consensus.

BACKGROUND: Disease outbreaks significantly affect maternal and neonatal health. Variability in reporting health outcomes hinder evidence generation. We aimed to develop a core outcome set (COS) for maternal and neonatal health research and surveillance during emerging and ongoing epidemic threats and to agree on outcomes' definitions. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of observational and experimental studies related to epidemics to identify outcomes, and a four-stage modified-Delphi consensus. 150 international stakeholders participated in online surveys, and 24 representatives in c

Day case hip and knee replacement in England: a population-based cohort study using linked National Joint Registry and Hospital Episode Statistics data.

BACKGROUND: In response to rising demand, disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic, and the need for improved cost-effectiveness, the way hip and knee replacements are being delivered is rapidly changing. Increasingly, they are being performed as day case procedures without an overnight stay in hospital. This study assessed the safety of this for a national cohort of NHS-funded procedures in England. METHODS: Data from the National Joint Registry, Hospital Episode Statistics, and Civil Registration of Deaths databases were linked to identify patients who underwent total hip replacement (THR) an

One health strategic planning: multi-criteria decision analysis to prioritize rabies interventions in Burkina Faso.

BACKGROUND: Rabies is recognized among the top five priority zoonotic diseases in Burkina Faso. As in other endemic countries around the world, implementing the One Health approach is a best way towards rabies control. In 2022, Burkina Faso adopted a national strategic plan (NSP) with the aim of advancing collaborative efforts towards the elimination of domestic dog-mediated human rabies by 2030. The first two years following the adoption of this strategic plan were characterized by a low level of commitment from involved stakeholders and unsuccessful implementation due to a wide range of cons

Education and socioeconomic status as predictors of refugee mental health: insights from a study of Jordan-based Syrian refugee sample.

BACKGROUND: The Syrian civil war is considered as the greatest humanitarian crisis in modern history, which has resulted in a major refugee crisis. A significant concern is the high prevalence of mental disorders such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among Syrian refugees. While the focus of most refugee mental health research has been pre-migration trauma, post-migration challenges and stressors, which can also be significant determinants of mental health, are often ignored. The purpose of this study was to assess mental health of Syrian refugees as compared t

A convolutional neural network prediction model for aviation nitrogen oxides emissions throughout all flight phases.

In recent years, there has been an increasing amount of research on nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions, and the environmental impact of aviation NOx emissions at cruising altitudes has received widespread attention. NOx may play a crucial role in altering the composition of the atmosphere, particularly regarding ozone formation in the upper troposphere. At present, the ground emission database based on the landing and takeoff (LTO) cycle is more comprehensive, while high-altitude emission data is scarce due to the prohibitively high cost and the inevitable measurement uncertainty associated with

Mix it-cograzing with cattle reduces broiler losses and increases broiler range use.

Pasture access allows broilers to perform a wide range of behaviors and is a prerequisite in organic poultry production, but exposes broilers to various potential hazards including predators. Co-grazing broilers with cattle can reduce land use and could offer protection from avian predation. Thus, we aimed to assess the effects of co-grazing on broiler losses, range use, performance, contact dermatitis and broilers' manipulation of cow pats. To this end, across 5 replicates we compared each a treatment group of 54 to 61 broilers co-grazing with 10 young cattle and a similar sized control group

Determinants of Sporadic Shiga Toxin-Producing Escherichia coli (STEC) Infection in Denmark, 2018-2020: A Matched Case-Control Study.

Infections with Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) are increasing in Denmark and elsewhere. STEC is also the most frequent cause of haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) in Danish children. Most cases are considered sporadic, while approximately one-third can be attributed to a known source of infection. Hence, we examined sources of sporadic STEC infection in Denmark. From January 2018 to December 2020, we conducted a prospective nationwide case-control study among Danish adults and children. Cases with confirmed positive STEC infection were notified infections within the national labo

Breastfeeding status and determinants of current breastfeeding of Syrian refugee children in Turkey.

BACKGROUND: Turkey hosts the highest number of refugees in the World including 65% of Syrian refugees who reside in Turkey. Mothers and children were the most negatively affected among the Syrian refugees who had to migrate from their countries as a result of the civil war in Syria. One of the most important issues in terms of child health is breastfeeding. Breastfeeding in migrants should be promoted worldwide to mitigate infant mortality and diseases. The aim of this study is to examine the association between breastfeeding status in Syrian refugee children under two years and socio-demograp

Association of globalization with the burden of opioid use disorders 2019. A country-level analysis using targeted maximum likelihood estimation.

BACKGROUND: The "opioid crisis" has been responsible for hundreds of thousands deaths in the US, and is at risk of dissemination worldwide. Within-country studies have demonstrated that the rise of opioid use disorders (OUD) is linked to increased access to opioid prescriptions and to so-called "diseases of despair". Both have been related to the emergence of globalization policies since the 1980s. First, globalized countries have seen a reorganization of healthcare practices towards quick and easy answers to complex needs, including increased opioid prescriptions. Second, despair has gained t
