INTRODUCTION: Headache continues to be the commonest neurological disorder of childhood. There are few studies of prophylactic treatment for headache at this age, perhaps because of the difficulty in measuring intensity of pain and response to treatment in children. Before headache can be treated prophylactically, it is necessary to know its exact site and main trigger mechanisms. Therefore, treatment has to be adapted to the individual, bearing in mind the age of the patient, frequency of headaches, presence or absence of aura, intensity of pain and attitude of the family. We described a 37-year-old man with Crohn's disease (CD) resembling systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) at his disease onset. He was admitted to the municiple Akiru Hospital in October 1986 by fever, aphtous oral ulcerations, sore throat and polyarthralgia. Hematologic examination showed leukocytopenia, lymphocytopenia, positive tests for antinuclear antibody, anti-DNA antibody and LE cell phenomenon. He has had episodes of convulsion and conciousness loss of unknown etiology when he was 17 years old. The diagnosis of SLE was made, and oral medication of prednisolone was started. Several weeks

BACKGROUND: The introduction and increasing popularity of the barbiturates during the first two decades of the 20th century was associated with a new life threatening toxicological problem: the barbiturate overdose.
METHODS: This paper reviews the four major phases of analeptic use. As interest in the principles of physiologic antagonism between stimulants and depressants grew, analeptic agents were increasingly used to treat the obtundation and respiratory depression of barbiturate overdose. At first, naturally occurring stimulants such as camphor, strychnine, picrotoxin, and caffeine were u

This 74-year-old female suddenly complained of severe headache, nausea, vomiting and dizziness on June 19, 1981. She was brought to nearby hospital. During the following six days, the state of consciousness gradually worsened and left-sided hemiparesis and convulsion attack arose and she was admitted to our clinic on June 25, 1981. Cerebral angiograms revealed an aneurysm of the right middle cerebral artery. Diagnosis of subarachnoid hemorrhage due to the rupture of an aneurysm was tentatively made and conservative therapy was done. On the second hospital day, she had nasal bleeding and began

Clinical and radiological studies of seven patients with autosomic recessive malignant osteopetrosis are presented. Diagnosis was established before the age of 3 months in six cases and at 7 months in one. In all cases the presenting signs were pallor and hepatosplenomegaly with associated neurological involvement in five. All patients had normocytic normochromic anemia, leucopenia and thrombocytopenia with features of extramedullary hematopoiesis. Radiological studies revealed increase in the density of bones with "mask" appearance of facial bones and diminished size of optic foramina. Long b

We reported a case of late infantile neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis. The patient was an 8-year-old boy presenting with marked psychomotor deterioration, progressive visual failure due to retinal degeneration and optic atrophy, startle reaction to auditory stimuli, frequent myoclonus and generalized convulsions. The routine laboratory examinations were all normal. EEG was markedly abnormal because of poorly organized background activity and frequent paroxysmal spike-and-wave complexes. CT scan showed evidence of severe atrophy of the cerebrum, cerebellum and brainstem. Electron microscopic exam

RATIONALE: Anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) encephalitis is an autoimmune encephalitis characterized by diverse neurological and psychiatric symptoms. It predominantly affects young women, particularly those with ovarian teratomas. However, cases without teratomas are also commonly reported, often exhibiting poorer treatment responses and higher relapse rates. Persistent fever and signs of meningitis are rare in such cases. Diagnosis is confirmed through the detection of anti-NMDAR antibodies.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 15-year-old female presented with episodic loss of consciousness, feve

OBJECTIVE: Reversible cerebral vasospasm syndrome (RCVS) is characterized by multiple reversible convulsions of the cerebral arteries, accompanied by recurrent, thunderclap-like headaches. The prognosis of most patients is favorable; however, extensive cerebral infarction may result in significant disability or mortality in approximately 5% of cases. Endovascular treatment may be a therapeutic option for patients who do not respond to medical therapy. However, there is a paucity of detailed studies addressing this procedure.

Seizures often herald the clinical appearance of gliomas or appear at later stages. Dissecting their precise evolution and cellular pathogenesis in brain malignancies could inform the development of staged therapies for these highly pharmaco-resistant epilepsies. Studies in immunodeficient xenograft models have identified local interneuron loss and excess glial glutamate release as chief contributors to network disinhibition, but how hyperexcitability in the peritumoral microenvironment evolves in an immunocompetent brain is unclear. We generated gliomas in WT mice via in utero deletion of key

BACKGROUND: Hand-Foot-and-Mouth disease (HFMD) is a viral illness commonly seen in young children, characterized by fever, vomiting, ulcerative lesions in oral mucosa, and vesicles on hands and feet. The early symptoms resolve but sometimes, it leads to more harsh neurological complications and even death. Therefore, the objective of this review was set to provide an overview of the symptoms, pathogenic agents, and treatment of neurological complications associated with HFMD.
METHODS: We reviewed literature from PubMed and Science Direct covering at least one of our objectives from inception

A 45-year-old man presented with the chief complaint of anal discomfort to a previous doctor. The symptoms remained after undergoing seton surgery following the diagnosis of intermuscular anal fistula. CT showed a tumor that was 3 cm in diameter on the right wall of the rectum, and he received a diagnosis of neuroendocrine carcinoma(NEC)based on a biopsy. Subsequently, he was admitted to our hospital. Liver metastasis accompanied NEC, and chemotherapy was performed for stage Ⅳ diagnosis. We detected tumor disappearance after administering 8 courses of CDDP plus CPT-11. However, after 3 months,

Acute necrotizing encephalopathy is characterized by multiple, symmetrical lesions involving the thalamus, brainstem, cerebellum, and white matter and develops secondarily to viral infections. Influenza viruses are the most common etiological agents. Here, we present the first case of acute necrotizing encephalopathy to develop secondarily to human bocavirus. A 3-year-old girl presented with fever and altered mental status. She had had a fever, cough, and rhinorrhea for five days. The patient was admitted to the intensive care unit with an initial diagnosis of encephalitis when vomiting, convu

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) has nearly uniformly fatal with a median survival of less than 2 years. While there have not been any novel anti-GBM therapeutics approved for many years, there has been the gradual accumulation of clinical data suggesting that the widely used anti-convulsant agent, valproic acid (VPA) may significantly prolong survival in GBM patients. This pre-clinical study aimed to determine the potential clinical utility of VPA in the treatment of GBM. Primary GBM cells were treated with VPA as a monotherapy and in combination with temozolomide and irradiation. At clinically

For several decades, both in vitro and in vivo models of seizures and epilepsy have been employed to unravel the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying the occurrence of spontaneous recurrent seizures (SRS)-the defining hallmark of the epileptic brain. However, despite great advances in our understanding of seizure genesis, investigators have yet to develop reliable biomarkers and surrogate markers of the epileptogenic process. Sadly, the pathogenic mechanisms that produce the epileptic condition, especially after precipitating events such as head trauma, inflammation, or prolonged febri

A 46-year-old male with refractory biphenotypic acute leukemia was treated with doxorubicin (days 1-3, 15-17), vincristine (days 1, 8, 15, 22), prednisolone (days 1-28), and L-asparaginase (L-ASP: days 15-28) as reinduction therapy. Physical examination revealed normotensive state and normal consciousness. On the 27th day, systemic seizures developed with mild hypertension (BP 151/98 mmHg). Computed tomography (CT) imaging of the brain showed areas of hypodensity in the bilateral white matter, and in the occipital and posterior parietal areas. Experimental models and clinical data indicate that the incidence of motor and learning disorders may be increased in children of epileptic mothers taking phenytoin (PHT) during pregnancy. There is little data on the vulnerability of infants to PHT-induced long-term behavioral toxicity after gestational or early life exposure (i.e., infantile convulsion therapy). We examined the persistence of alterations in circling behavior induced by exposure to PHT during gestation, infancy, or both. Pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were injected i.p. with saline (SAL) or PHT (30 mg/kg/day) during gestational
