PURPOSE: A prospective study was initiated 7 years previously to assess the efficacy of endoscopic dextranomer based implants for pediatric structural incontinence. Preliminary results revealed that at 3 years 50% of the patients were either dry or significantly improved. We report long-term results in the same cohort of patients.

PURPOSE: We present long-term observations on photoselective vaporization of the prostate in a prospectively studied cohort of men with obstructive benign prostatic hyperplasia.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Obstructive benign prostatic hyperplasia in 94 men was treated with transurethral near contact vaporization with potassium-titanyl-phosphate laser with the patient under general or spinal anesthesia. Intrauterine contraceptives devices have been in use for many years. Although perforation of the uterus by an intrauterine device is not uncommon, intravesical migration with secondary stone formation is a rare complication. BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Serious injuries to the urinary tract may occur during the repair of an anorectal malformation, especially in boys. This review of a large series of patients characterizes factors that may either lead to, or prevent, those injuries.
METHODS: A retrospective review of 1,003 boys with anorectal malformations was performed.

OBJECTIVE: Bovine collagen has been successfully used for the endoscopic treatment of urinary incontinence (UI) and vesico-ureteric reflux (VUR) in children for more than 8 years, although its long-term efficacy has sometimes been questioned. Its failure is generally ascribed either to technical difficulties or to instability of collagen at the site of the implant. Spontaneous rupture of the normal bladder associated with alcohol abuse is rare, with only 20 cases reported in the English literature to which we add 2 cases. Heavy alcohol ingestion predisposes the bladder to rupture by the large volume of fluid intake, its diuretic effect and the mental obtusion it produces, clouding sensory cues to void. alpha-Sympathomimetic drugs, such as cocaine and methamphetamine, increase the resistance at the urethral sphincter and exacerbate the effects of alcohol. Cystography will be diagnostic, and prompt operative repair of intraperitoneal rupture is mandatory.

Relevant factors, both simple and complicated, for the evaluation of the treatment of outlet obstruction secondary to BPH have been discussed in the context of defining the components of an adequate trial of nonsurgical or surgical treatment for this entity. Some systematic assessment of symptomatology and a baseline minimal urodynamic evaluation should be the least common denominator for all patients entered into such studies.
