Breastfeeding practices in mothers of high-respiratory-risk NICU infants: impact of depressive symptoms and smoking.

AIM: Mothers of infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) have very low breastfeeding rates and these high-respiratory-risk (HRR) NICU infants may benefit from breastfeeding through decreased risk for respiratory illnesses. This population's increased risk for maternal depression and high rates (22%) of maternal smoking may negatively affect breastfeeding. OBJECTIVE: This exploratory study investigated associations of breastfeeding with depressive symptoms and maternal smoking in mothers of HRR NICU infants (i.e. presence of one household smoker and birth weight <1500 g or mechanical

Modern neuraxial labor analgesia: techniques, pharmacologic strategies, and maternal-fetal outcomes.

Neuraxial labor analgesia (NLA) remains the gold standard for intrapartum pain management, providing superior analgesia, higher maternal satisfaction, and improved fetal safety compared with systemic or inhalational techniques. Recent advances in initiation methods- including epidural analgesia, combined spinal-epidural, and dural puncture epidural techniques-as well as optimized pharmacological regimens using low-concentration local anesthetics combined with lipophilic opioids, have improved analgesic onset, sacral coverage, and block uniformity while minimizing motor blockade. Modern mainten

Examining Suicidal Ideation and Capability Across the Menstrual Cycle.

INTRODUCTION: Suicidal thoughts and behaviors have been linked to menarche and the perimenstrual phase of the menstrual cycle. This study examines whether acute changes in fearlessness about death (FAD) occur across the menstrual cycle. It also explores relationships between FAD and other known correlates of suicidal behaviors across the cycle. METHOD: The sample included 46 participants in good health, with natural menstrual cycles, past-month suicidal ideation, and ongoing outpatient mental health. Participants were excluded for exogenous hormone or cycle-altering medication use, nicotine u

Association between maternal-infant health literacy, social support, and psychological stress during the perinatal period among women in Macao, China.

BACKGROUND: Health literacy varies in multicultural areas due to differing cultural beliefs. In Macao, a multicultural city in China, the blend of traditional Chinese and Western medicine influences health literacy, particularly in maternal-infant health. However, data on this topic are limited, hindering our understanding of healthcare in such regions. OBJECTIVES: This study investigates maternal knowledge, social support, and psychological stress among perinatal women in Macao. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study was conducted with perinatal women between 28 weeks of gestation and 6 weeks post

What are antenatal maternity care needs of women who conceived through fertility treatment?: a mixed methods systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Existing research indicates that pregnant women who conceived through fertility treatment might experience more stress and anxiety compared to women who conceived spontaneously. Therefore, these women might have additional antenatal care needs. METHODS: A search for both quantitative and qualitative studies was performed in PubMed, PsycINFO, CINAHL and MEDLINE through May 2021, guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses checklist. 21 articles met the inclusion criteria. After methodological quality appraisal using the Mixed Methods Appraising

Disease Perception and Mental Health in Pregnancies with Gestational Diabetes-PsychDiab Pilot Study.

(1) Background: The aim of this work is to investigate the extent to which pregnant women's well-being is burdened by the diagnosis of gestational diabetes, as well as their sensitivities and illness perceptions. Since gestational diabetes is associated with mental disorders, we hypothesized that the burden of illness might be related to pre-existing mental distress. (2) Methods: Patients treated for gestational diabetes in our outpatient clinic were retrospectively asked to complete a survey, including the self-designed Psych-Diab-Questionnaire to assess treatment satisfaction, perceived limi

Transgenerational associations between maternal childhood stress exposure and profiles of infant emotional reactivity.

Childhood exposure to stress can induce prolonged negative effects on health, which in turn confer risks for the next generation, but greater specificity is needed to inform intervention. A first step is to measure individual differences in emotional reactivity to stress early in life in ways that can account for heterogeneity in child exposure. The present study tested the hypothesis that mothers' childhood exposure to stress would be differentially associated with patterns of positive and negative emotional reactivity in their offspring, suggesting transmission of stress response across gene

Postpartum Bonding Disorder: Factor Structure, Validity, Reliability and a Model Comparison of the Postnatal Bonding Questionnaire in Japanese Mothers of Infants.

Negative attitudes of mothers towards their infant is conceptualized as postpartum bonding disorder, which leads to serious health problems in perinatal health care. However, its measurement still remains to be standardized. Our aim was to examine and confirm the psychometric properties of the Postnatal Bonding Questionnaire (PBQ) in Japanese mothers. We distributed a set of questionnaires to community mothers and studied 392 mothers who returned the questionnaires at 1 month after childbirth. Our model was compared with three other models derived from previous studies. In a randomly halved sa

Does breastfeeding protect against substantiated child abuse and neglect? A 15-year cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: We explored whether breastfeeding was protective against maternally perpetrated child maltreatment. METHODS: A total of 7223 Australian mother-infant pairs were monitored prospectively over 15 years. In 6621 (91.7%) cases, the duration of breastfeeding was analyzed with respect to child maltreatment (including neglect, physical abuse, and emotional abuse), on the basis of substantiated child protection agency reports. Multinomial logistic regression was used to compare no maltreatment with nonmaternal and maternally perpetrated maltreatment and to adjust for confounding in 5890 ca

[Iron deficiency anemia and its importance in gastroenterology clinical practise].

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a universal problem involving individuals of all ages and both sexes and is a common cause of referral to medical departments. This anemia is one of the most common types of anemia. IDA impairs growth and intellectual development in children and adolescent. In women IDA is most common in reproductive period because of menstrual and pregnancy iron losses. IDA affects roughly 10-30% of all pregnancies and, among others morbidities, may contribute of developing postpartum depression. Among other adult patient, chronic occult gastrointestinal bleeding is the leading

Maternal deaths due to homicide and other injuries in North Carolina: 1992-1994.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the role of homicide and other injuries in maternal deaths in North Carolina over the three-year period from 1992 through 1994. METHODS: Maternal deaths were identified from death certificates that indicated a maternal death and through an enhanced surveillance system that matches death certificates with live-birth and fetal-death certificates. Deaths were classified as direct, indirect, medically unrelated, or injury-related. Patterns of prenatal care were ascertained from the matching live-birth or fetal-death certificates. Maternal death rates for whites and nonwhit

Acceptability of remotely supervised Home-Based transcranial direct current stimulation combined with Cognitive-behavioural-based app for peripartum depression: perspectives from women with lived experience and mental health professionals.

Peripartum depression (PPD) has a global prevalence of 20% significantly impacting societies. Yet, existing treatments face barriers for its uptake. This study examined the acceptability of a remotely supervised home-based transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) solution combined with a CBT-based app (the FLOW Neuroscience solution) for PPD, among women (experts by experience; EEs) and healthcare professionals (HPs). Fifteen EEs and 14 HPs participated in focus groups informed by the Theoretical Framework of Acceptability. Narratives were iteratively refined, using the template analysis

Mental health and tobacco use as predictors of breastfeeding duration among Virginia mothers.

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding offers substantial positive health outcomes for both the mother and infant and has been identified as one of the most effective strategies for promoting infant health; however, the United States falls short in sustained breastfeeding rates. Additionally, with mental health conditions and substance use during pregnancy and the postpartum period affect nearly 1 in every 5 women in the U.S., more research is needed to better understand how these behavioral health factors, along with the co-occurrence of these factors, impact breastfeeding trends. METHODS: Cross-sectiona

Self- screening using the Edinburgh post natal depression scale for mothers and fathers to initiate early help seeking behaviours.

The forthcoming birth of a new baby and the life changes that occur can present parents with a range of challenges. While recognised in mothers, postnatal depression is not well researched in fathers; especially considering that up to 25% of men report experiencing depression in the ante and postnatal periods. The aim of this study was to test a self-screening tool and referral pathway pamphlet for expectant women and their partners. We used a single blinded randomised controlled study design. The sample, comprised 70 dyads, was randomised to either care as usual or to the self-screening tool

Cognitive factors and post-partum depression: What is the influence of general personality traits, rumination, maternal self-esteem, and alexithymia?

OBJECTIVES: The objective was to assess the impact of cognitive factors on post-partum depression (PPD) symptoms. Because most of the literature data concern the immediate post-partum period or the first year post-partum, we notably sought to assess the longer term impact of cognitive factors on the symptoms of PPD. METHODS: Two studies were performed. In a pilot study, 1-month post-partum, 63 women filled out a sociodemographic information sheet and completed the abbreviated, revised Eysenck Personality Questionnaire, the Ruminative Responses Scale, the Maternal Self-Report Inventory, and th
