Longitudinal assessment of structural and locomotor deficits as a prediction of severity in the collagenase-induced mouse model of osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to provide an in-depth longitudinal locomotor and structural characterisation of the collagenase-induc … est to detect early locomotor changes and predict histological changes. Meniscal calcifications and osteophyte formation, which can be observed by µCT at early time points, are also highly predictive of OA severity. These two non-invasive techniques are very useful for longitudinal monitoring of mice and OA score prediction.

Immunoregulatory orchestrations in osteoarthritis and mesenchymal stromal cells for therapy.

UNLABELLED: Osteoarthritis (OA) is characterized by the inability of stable and complex joint structures to function as they did, accompanied by inflammation, tissue changes, chronic pain, and neuropathic inflammation. In the past, the primary focus on the causes of joint dysfunction has been on mechanical stress leading to cartilage wear. Further researches emphasize the aging of cartilage and subchondral bone triggered cartilage lesion and osteophyte formation. Recently, the effects of immune cells, particularly macrophages and T cells, have been receiving focused attention. Herein, we prima…

Radiological-behavioral disparities in experimental osteoarthritis: Sex-specific progression and therapeutic response in a rat model.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a progressive degenerative joint disorder characterized by cartilage loss, subchondral bone remod … Radiographs revealed classical OA features, joint space narrowing, subchondral bone sclerosis, and osteophyte formation, with progressive severity across timepoints. NSAID-treated males demonstrated significant improvement in motor coordination and nociceptive thresholds on days 7 and 14 (p < 0.001), whereas females exhibited only modest or delayed response …

A new treatment algorithmic for congenital contracture of the ulnar digits-based on pathological classification.

OBJECTIVE: To explore a new algorithmic treatment for Congenital Contracture of the Ulnar Digits based on pathological classification. METH … SION: Congenital contracture of the ulnar digits can be classified into three pathological subtypes-osteophyte subtype, fibrosis subtype and mixed subtype-through the combination of clinical evaluation and surgical exploration. By adopting different treatment algorithms for different pathological subtypes and providing professional rehabilitation therapy, pa …

Investigating the Relationship Between Metatarsal Primus Elevatus and Hallux Rigidus Using Weight-Bearing Computed Tomography: A Retrospective Comparison Study.

BACKGROUND: Hallux rigidus is a degenerative disease of the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint, characterized by joint space narrowing and dorsal osteophyte formation. Metatarsus primus elevatus (MPE) is frequently observed in hallux rigidus, although its role in the pathogenesis remains unclear. The windlass mechanism, which stabilizes the medial longitudinal arch by tightening the plantar fascia during hallux dorsiflexion, plays a key role in normal foot biomechanics. Dysfunction of this mechanism may result in loss of arch stability and altered loading of the first MTP joint, potentially…

Degenerative Cervical Myelopathy: An Overview.

Degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM) is a spinal condition of growing importance due to its increasing prevalence within the ageing population. DCM involves the degeneration of the cervical spine due to various processes such as disc ageing, osteophyte formation, ligament hypertrophy or ossification, as well as coexisting congenital anomalies. This article provides an overview of the literature on DCM and considers areas of focus for future research. A patient with DCM can present with a variety of symptoms ranging from mild hand paraesthesia and loss of dexterity to a more severe presentati…

Usefulness of the acromioclavicular joint cross-sectional area as a diagnostic image parameter of acromioclavicular osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: Acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) space narrowing has been considered to be an important diagnostic image parameter of ACJ osteoarthritis (ACJO). However, the morphology of the ACJ space is irregular because of osteophyte formation, subchondral irregularity, capsular distention, sclerosis, and erosion. Therefore, we created the ACJ cross-sectional area (ACJCSA) as a new diagnostic image parameter to assess the irregular morphologic changes of the ACJ. AIM: To hypothesize that the ACJCSA is a new diagnostic image parameter for ACJO. METHODS: ACJ samples were obtained from 35 patients …

Is there a correlation between humeral osteoarthritis and glenoid morphology according to Walch?

AIMS: The aim of this study was to determine whether there is a correlation between the grade of humeral osteoarthritis (OA) and the severity of glenoid morphology according to Walch. We hypothesized that there would be a correlation. METHODS: Overal, 143 shoulders in 135 patients (73 females, 62 males) undergoing shoulder arthroplasty surgery for primary glenohumeral OA were included consecutively. Mean age was 69.3 years (47 to 85). Humeral head (HH), osteophyte length (OL), and morphology (transverse decentering of the apex, transverse, or coronal asphericity) on radiographs were correlate…

CT of the cervical spine revealed a ventral C3/4 osteophyte within the foramen. Based on these findings, instability at the C3-4 during head rotation was considered the cause of the vertebrobasilar insufficiency.
