Nephrologists' Perspectives on Recipient Eligibility and Access to Living Kidney Donor Transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Wide variations in access to living kidney donation are apparent across transplant centers. Such disparities may be in part explained by nephrologists' beliefs and decisions about recipient eligibility. This study aims to describe nephrologists' attitudes towards recipient eligibility and access to living kidney donor transplantation. METHODS: Face-to-face semistructured interviews were conducted from June to October 2013 with 41 nephrologists from Australia and New Zealand. Transcripts were analyzed thematically. RESULTS: We identified five major themes: championing optimal reci

The impact of short periods of match congestion on injury risk and patterns in an elite football club.

BACKGROUND: The effect of fixture congestion on injury rates and patterns has received scarce attention in elite football and existing investigations have not accounted for player rotation or examined the temporal distribution and potential cause of injuries. AIM: To prospectively investigate the epidemiology of injury during short periods of fixture congestion in a professional football club. METHODS: Over a six-season period, exposure time and injury data were compared in the same players (n=25 (14 individuals)) when participating in two frequently occurring short congested fixture cycles

The BSCC code of practice--exfoliative cytopathology (excluding gynaecological cytopathology).

Exfoliative cytopathology (often referred to as non-gynaecological cytology) is an important part of the workload of all diagnostic pathology departments. It clearly has a role in the diagnosis of neoplastic disease but its role in establishing non-neoplastic diagnoses should also be recognised. Ancillary tests may be required to establish a definitive diagnosis. Clinical and scientific teamwork is essential to establish an effective cytology service and staffing levels should be sufficient to support preparation, prescreening, on-site adequacy assessment and reporting of samples as appropriat

Sports participation in selected children with brachial plexus birth palsy.

BACKGROUND: Despite the growth in youth sports in the United States, there is little information regarding sports participation in children with impairments, and specifically those with brachial plexus birth palsy (BPBP). The purpose of this investigation was to characterize the degree of sports participation, level of perceived diminished participation, and risk of sports-related injury in children with BPBP. METHODS: Eighty-five children with BPBP between 6 and 18 years of age were queried about their participation in athletics. Information regarding sports played, duration of activity, lev

Guidelines on "Standards of management of idiopathic scoliosis with corrective braces in everyday clinics and in clinical research": SOSORT Consensus 2008.

BACKGROUND: Reported failure rates,(defined based on percentage of cases progressing to surgery) of corrective bracing for idiopathic scoliosis are highly variable. This may be due to the quality of the brace itself, but also of the patient care during treatment. The latter is sometimes neglected, even though it is considered a main determinant of good results among conservative experts of SOSORT. The aim of this paper was to develop and verify the Consensus on management of scoliosis patients treated with braces METHODS: We followed a Delphi process in four steps, distributing and gradually

In vitro evaluation of ureteral perforation forces.

OBJECTIVES: Ureteroscopy has become a very effective treatment option for ureteral and upper tract abnormalities. The reported complication rates have ranged from 1.5% to 13% for perforations and have been less than 1% for avulsions. We present a study that quantified the ureteral avulsion force in porcine ureters and ureteral perforation forces in human and porcine ureters. METHODS: The avulsion force was measured in six porcine kidneys. A 2.4F stainless steel flat-wire basket was advanced through an incision made in the renal pelvis, and a 10-mm stone was placed in the extraction basket. Th

[Meningococcal C disease epidemic in Galicia 1996: the decision making process].

In this article we describe the decision making process used to choose the best alternative for bringing under control an epidemic of meningococcal C disease, which occurred in Galicia in 1996. In the decision making process, we used a methodology which consisted on the identification and definition of a problem, in order to identify alternative solutions and to select one, and finally implement and evaluate it. The health problem was detected studying the data obtained from a survey conducted following an outbreak of meningococcal C disease in february 1995 and from the active epidemiological

Advanced Practice Nursing Development Within Diverse Regulatory Landscapes: A Descriptive Survey of European Countries.

AIM: To explore the relationship between professional regulatory systems and advanced practice nursing development in Europe. BACKGROUND: Advanced practice nursing has expanded rapidly, yet regulatory frameworks have often struggled to keep pace with the extended scope of practice demanded by contemporary service delivery. Misalignment leaves new roles inadequately supported, with consequences for both patient safety and the broader transformative potential of the profession. METHODS: For this cross-sectional descriptive study, key informants were recruited by purposive sampling across the W

Patient and healthcare factors associated with treatment response in patients with hand osteoarthritis: secondary analyses from a randomised controlled, noninferiority trial.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore patient- and healthcare-related factors associated with treatment response 6 months after receiving recommended care for hand osteoarthritis (HOA) in specialist health services. METHODS: We analysed data from 340 individuals with HOA who participated in a randomised controlled trial. Participants received patient education, medication, and/or guided hand exercises. Those with thumb carpometacarpal (CMC1-OA) were also offered a thumb orthosis. Multivariable logistic regression analyses examined associations between treatment response (OMERACT-OARSI respo

Aging and Disability Simulation in Dental Education: A Mixed-Methods Evaluation of Student Perceptions.

INTRODUCTION: As global populations age, dental professionals must be better prepared to meet the complex needs of older adults and individuals with disabilities. This mixed-methods study examined whether participation in an ageing and disability simulation curriculum was associated with changes in dental students' self-reported awareness, confidence, and reflective understanding. METHOD: Third-year students at a U.S. dental school participated in a required geriatric rotation; 226 completed the pre-intervention survey, 231 the post-intervention survey, and 219 provided matched responses for

Research Participation During a National Educational Disruption: Insights From a Natural Experiment in Medical Education.

BACKGROUND: Immersive research experiences are widely recognized as valuable for medical students. However, opportunities for extended research are often constrained by dense curricula. In 2024, the Republic of Korea experienced an inevitable nationwide suspension of medical education for about one year, allowing some students to engage in full-time research. From this unique situation, the present study aimed to explore the medical students' motivations for research participation, their self-perceived outcomes, and the types of institutional support they have identified as necessary to ensure

Guidance for laboratory implementation, governance and continuous assurance of artificial intelligence in histopathology.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming histopathology, with applications ranging from workflow optimisation and quality assurance to tumour diagnosis, grading, biomarker assessment and estimation of prognosis. While numerous AI algorithms have demonstrated promising analytical and clinical performance, pathology laboratories are increasingly adopting commercially available AI systems with regulatory-approval rather than developing their own algorithms. Existing guidance largely focuses on AI development, validation and regulatory approval, with comparatively little practical dire

No Free Lunch in Competency-Based Health Professions Education: Exploring Trade-Offs, Value, and Shared Investment in Health Professions Education.

BACKGROUND/PROBLEM: Competency-Based Health Professions Education (CBHPE) aims to improve workforce readiness, patient safety, and equity, but achieving these outcomes requires sustained investment. The "No Free Lunch" (NFL) rule underscores that value cannot be realized without visible costs, which can be financial, cultural, temporal, and structural. Although costs are ideally shared across the health professions education and health care ecosystem, interest holders often invest unevenly despite broad benefits. As a result, many programs and institutions struggle to implement and sustain CBH

Well-Being in First Person: A Relational Construction of Psychological Well-Being Among Young People With Intellectual Disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Psychological well-being (PWB) has become a central construct in contemporary psychology; however, young people with intellectual disabilities (ID) remain largely underrepresented in well-being research. Much of the available evidence relies on proxy reports from caregivers or professionals, limiting understanding of how young people with ID themselves conceptualize and experience well-being. This qualitative study explores the meaning of psychological well-being from a first-person perspective among young people with mild intellectual disabilities. METHOD: Thirteen participants (

Using Complex Interventions to Develop Programme Theory for a Family-Focused Model of Telepalliative Care.

BACKGROUND: Patients and families find telepalliative care to be a valuable and convenient supplement to conventional palliative care services. However, challenges persist in sustaining meaningful telepalliative care beyond the initial implementation. Developing structured models that are culturally and contextually aligned may be the key to sustainability. AIM: To develop programme theory for a family-focused model of telepalliative care for adult patients and their families. METHODS: Guided by the British Medical Research Council's framework for developing and evaluating complex interventi

Balancing ideals and realities: health care professionals' perspectives of and attitudes toward digital patient-centered cancer care.

PURPOSE: Patient-centered care (PCC) improves quality of life, symptom management and healthcare outcomes in oncology. However, integration into routine cancer care remains limited. Digital solutions using patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) offer a potential mechanism to operationalize PCC. This study explored healthcare professionals' (HCPs) pre-implementation perspectives on using digital PROMs to support PCC in Norwegian oncology outpatient clinics, informing the design and implementation strategies of the European MyPath digital solution. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews (n = 29

Practice recommendations for physical activity promotion in exercise therapy, physical therapy, and other movement-based therapies: a co-design project (PRO-BT) in German medical rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity (PA) benefits individuals with noncommunicable diseases, yet its promotion is inconsistently implemented in medical rehabilitation. In Germany, exercise and physical therapists are central to PA promotion, but a lack of practical, evidence-based guidance has hindered integration into therapy. The PRO-BT project addresses this gap by developing consensus-based, evidence-informed practice recommendations for movement-based therapies. METHODS: The project employed a structured four-step approach: (1) evidence update via scoping review, overview of systematic reviews

South African speech-language therapists' perceived competencies and use of Makaton.

BACKGROUND: Makaton, an unaided augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) method, is widely used by speech-language therapists (SLTs) in diverse clinical and educational settings. Despite its applicability across populations with complex communication needs, limited research has explored how South African SLTs perceive, use and experience Makaton. This gap is significant given South Africa's multilingual context, resource disparities and the need for culturally relevant AAC strategies. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore South African SLTs' perceived competencies and use of Makaton
