CENTERS: The growth in liver transplantation activity recorded by the Pitt-UNOS Liver Transplant Registry since October 1987 continued. We aim to provide a panorama of liver donation and transplantation in Poland, where each year around 300 liver transplantations from deceased donors and 20 liver fragment transplantations from living donors are performed. This means about 9 transplantations per population of 1 million. Each year, the number of deceased donors reaches more than 500. In more than 50% of cases, livers are used. Posttransplantation lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) is a serious complication following solid organ transplantation that has been linked to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. The aim of this article was to describe a single-center experience with the multiplicity of clinical presentations of PTLD. Among 350 liver transplantations performed in 303 children, 13 survivor children displayed a histological diagnosis of PTLD (13/242 survivors; 5.4%). PURPOSE: We report the long-term outcome of ABO-incompatible living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) performed in our hospital.
METHODS: We started the LDLT program in 1991 and from that year up to now (2008) 11 patients have received an ABO-incompatible graft.
RESULTS: Nine out of the 11 cases have survived from 3.7 years to 13.9 years (mean 7.3 years) and they are in good conditions at present. Seven patients were subjected to preoperative apheresis. Between 1984 and 1996, the authors performed 499 liver transplants in 416 children less than 15 years old. The overall patient survival at 10 years was 76.5%.
