Systematic development of esthetics and function in a young patient with maxillary dental aplasia.

OBJECTIVES: Full-arch rehabilitations in young patients suffering from dental agenesis should compensate for the reduced vertical dimension of occlusion and restore both esthetics and function at minimal biological cost. This requires precise planning and maximum patient compliance during the preprosthetic phase. The pretreatment period with tooth-colored splints promotes a predictable outcome of the final restorations. Clinical considerations: Thanks to better restorative materials and adhesive techniques and increased knowledge of how to preserve sound tooth structures, prosthetic dentistry

Abiotic tooth enamel.

Tooth enamel comprises parallel microscale and nanoscale ceramic columns or prisms interlaced with a soft protein matrix. This structural motif is unusually consistent across all species from all geological eras. Such invariability-especially when juxtaposed with the diversity of other tissues-suggests the existence of a functional basis. Here we performed ex vivo replication of enamel-inspired columnar nanocomposites by sequential growth of zinc oxide nanowire carpets followed by layer-by-layer deposition of a polymeric matrix around these. We show that the mechanical properties of these nano

Evaluation of Hi-Tec Implant Restoration in Mandibular First Molar Region- A Prospective Clinical Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Missing teeth lead to loss of structural balance, inefficient function, poor aesthetics and psychological effects on human beings, which needs restoration for normal contour, function and aesthetics. Several natural or synthetic substitutes are being used for replacement of missing tooth since centuries. Implants are the latest modality of replacement. So, the study was aimed to assess clinical success rate of Hi-Tec implant; which is economical and new in market. Results of the study will help clinician for appropriate implant selection. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study

Histological and mechanical differences in the skin of patients with rectal prolapse.

INTRODUCTION: It is still an enigma that some patients develop rectal prolapse whilst others with similar risk factors do not. Biomechanical assessment of the skin may provide further insight into the aetiology of this complex condition. Elastin fibres are an abundant and integral part of many extracellular matrices and are especially critical for providing the property of elastic recoil to tissues. The significance of elastin fibres is clearly reflected by the numerous human conditions in which a skin phenotype occurs as a result of elastin fibre abnormalities. METHOD: Between January and Ju

Increased migration of uncemented acetabular cups in female total hip arthroplasty patients with low systemic bone mineral density. A 2-year RSA and 8-year radiographic follow-up study of 34 patients.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Low bone mineral density (BMD) may jeopardize the initial component stability and delay osseointegration of uncemented acetabular cups in total hip arthroplasty (THA). We measured the migration of uncemented cups in women with low or normal BMD. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We used radiostereometric analysis (RSA) to measure the migration of hydroxyapatite-coated titanium alloy cups with alumina-on-alumina bearings in THA of 34 female patients with a median age of 64 (41-78) years. 10 patients had normal BMD and 24 patients had low systemic BMD (T-score ≤ -1) based on dual-en

Sacroplasty for cancer-associated insufficiency fractures.

BACKGROUND: Tumor-associated sacral insufficiency fractures (SIF) present a significant clinical challenge. As survival increases for many malignancies, sacral fractures associated with metastases, sacral or extended pelvic radiation, and paraneoplastic osteoporosis are increasingly common and yet remain difficult to treat in the setting of the potentially significant morbidity of open sacral surgery. OBJECTIVE: To describe our prospective experience with sacroplasty for tumor-associated lesions, including the largest series to date of radiation-induced SIF. METHODS: Twenty-five patients wit

Long-term stability of soft tissues following alveolar ridge preservation: 10-year results of a prospective study around nonsubmerged implants.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term clinical outcomes around implants placed in sites previously augmented with demineralized bovine bone mineral with 10% collagen (Bio-Oss Collagen, Geistlich). In this prospective study, 36 consecutive, healthy patients, in need of a single-tooth extraction (incisors, canines, and premolars) and implant replacement, were included. After tooth extraction, Bio-Oss Collagen was inserted in the socket and covered either with a double layer of collagen membrane (test) or with a few drops of a flowable polylactide polymer (control). Impingement and dislocation in total hip arthroplasty: mechanisms and consequences.

In contemporary total hip arthroplasty, instability has been a complication in approximately 2% to 5% of primary surgeries and 5% to 10% of revisions. Due to the reduction in the incidence of wear-induced osteolysis that has been achieved over the last decade, instability now stands as the single most common reason for revision surgery. Moreover, even without frank dislocation, impingement and subluxation are implicated in a set of new concerns arising with advanced bearings, associated with the relatively unforgiving nature of many of those designs. Against that backdrop, the biomechanical fa

Revision hip arthroplasty in patients with a previous total hip replacement for osteonecrosis of the femoral head.

Patients with osteonecrosis of the femoral head are typically relatively young and active and often require high rates of revision after primary total hip arthroplasty. However, outcomes of revision hip arthroplasty in this patient population have rarely been reported in the literature. The authors conducted a retrospective review of 72 patients (75 hips) who underwent revision hip arthroplasty with a primary diagnosis of osteonecrosis of the femoral head. Mean age at index revision was 53.3 years (range, 34-76). Components of acetabular revision included a cementless porous-coated cup in 58 h

A model study on the absorbed dose of radiation following respiratory intake of 238U3O8 aerosols.

Aerosols of depleted uranium oxides, formed upon high-energy impact of shells on hard targets during military operations, are able to disperse, reach the alveolar region of the lungs and be absorbed and distributed throughout various parts of the body. The absorbed particles are subjected to clearance in the upper respiratory tract, distribution to other body districts, dissolution and excretion. While the soluble forms of uranium are known to deliver a small dose of radiation to the body due to their homogeneous distribution and the low specific activity of (238)U, ceramic particles exhibit a

Single-tooth replacement in the anterior maxilla by means of immediate implantation and early loading: clinical and aesthetic results at 5 years.

BACKGROUND: The hypothesis of the present study was that the early loading of single implants-supported restorations, replacing single extracting teeth in the anterior region of the maxilla in case of fresh extraction sockets with residual hard and soft tissue preservation, could be a successful procedure. METHODS: Twenty-one implants were placed into maxillary anterior fresh extraction sockets using a flapless technique. Temporary restorations, which were fabricated from the impression taken immediately after implant placement, were connected within 2 weeks. These temporary restorations were

Solitary median maxillary central incisor syndrome (SMMCI) with congenital nasal puriform aperture stenosis: literature review and case report with comprehensive dental treatment and 14 years follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Solitary median maxillary central incisor syndrome [SMMCI] is an extremely rare anomaly, especially when no other abnormalities are present. The defect is often found together with various nasal abnormalities and short stature with or without decreased levels of growth hormone. In more severe cases, SMMCI has been associated with holoprosencephaly, the CHARGE and the VACTERL association. Also, published sporadic cases have been related with rare variants of ectodermal dysplasia, chromosomal abnormalities, precocious puberty, hypothalamic hamartoma, congenital heart defects, physica

The changing paradigm of revision of total hip replacement in the presence of osteolysis.

Osteolysis tends to remain clinically silent and presents a treatment challenge. In the past, the progression of implant wear was used to determine the timing of interventions. Recent reports of lesions associated with metal-on-metal implants and trunnion corrosion with femoral head sizes larger than 32 mm suggest that other mechanisms of wear debris production may be present; observation alone may not provide adequate monitoring. Advanced imaging modalities, such as MRI, should be used along with routine radiography to assess soft-tissue involvement and the size of osteolytic lesions. Intraop

No difference in gait recovery after THA with different head diameters: a prospective randomized study.

BACKGROUND: Larger femoral heads are commonly presumed to improve joint stability and hip biomechanics; some studies have suggested they may hasten recovery of a normal gait. To our knowledge, no gait analysis studies have compared different size head diameters in THA. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We compared (1) spatiotemporal gait parameters, (2) kinematic and kinetic gait parameters, and (3) Harris hip scores in patients undergoing THA randomized to receive a 28-, 36-, or ≥ 42-mm bearing couple. We hypothesized a larger femoral head would restore an earlier, more physiologic gait pattern. METHODS:

Microcomputed tomographic and histologic analysis of anorganic bone matrix coupled with cell-binding peptide suspended in sodium hyaluronate carrier after sinus augmentation: a clinical study.

PURPOSE: Anorganic bovine hydroxyapatite matrix (ABM), when coupled with synthetic cell-binding peptide (P15), mimics the cell-binding region of type 1 collagen and is commercially available suspended in a sodium hyaluronate carrier. The aim of the present study, therefore, was to test the efficacy of ABM/P-15 Putty (DENTSPLY Friadent CeraMed) as a sole graft material for sinus augmentation in patients with severely resorbed posterior maxillae. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sinus augmentation was performed in 10 patients using ABM/P-15 Putty and two provisional dental implants (3.0 mm in diameter).

Effects of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) degradability on the apatite-forming capacity of electrospun PLGA/SiO(2)-CaO nonwoven composite fabrics.

We investigated the effects of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) degradability on the apatite-forming ability of electrospun PLGA/SiO(2)-CaO gel composite fabric. Two PLGA copolymer compositions with low and high degradability were used in experiments. A nonwoven polymer/ceramic composite fabric composed of randomly mixed microsized biodegradable PLGA fibers and nanosized bioactive SiO(2)-CaO gel fibers was prepared using a simultaneous electrospinning method. A 17 wt.% PLGA solution was prepared using 1,1,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol as a solvent, while the SiO(2)-CaO gel solution was prepare

Metabolite extraction from adherently growing mammalian cells for metabolomics studies: optimization of harvesting and extraction protocols.

Trypsin/ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) treatment and cell scraping in a buffer solution were compared for harvesting adherently growing mammalian SW480 cells for metabolomics studies. In addition, direct scraping with a solvent was tested. Trypsinated and scraped cell pellets were extracted using seven different extraction protocols including pure methanol, methanol/water, pure acetone, acetone/water, methanol/chloroform/water, methanol/isopropanol/water, and acid-base methanol. The extracts were analyzed by GC-MS after methoximation/silylation and derivatization with propyl chloroform
