Sera from 7 patients with pemphigus vulgaris and both mouse and rabbit antisera against bovine epidermal desmosomes contained antibodies that bound to cell surface components of the spinous layer of bovine epidermis. We examined globin chain synthesis in erythroid bursts (BFU-E) of patients with heterozygous alpha or beta thalassaemia. BFU-E were cloned from circulating mononuclear cells, labelled with [3H]leucine and globin chains purified by gel filtration and column chromatography. A new recombinant K39 immunochromatographic test (ICT) was compared with the immunofluorescent antibody assay (IFA) for the rapid serological diagnosis of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in Apulia, Southern Italy. A total of 264 individuals were tested, including 19 patients with VL (three of which were HIV positive), 67 individuals with suspected VL, 40 healthy controls and 138 patients with other diseases. OBJECTIVE: Despite the growing body of evidence showing adverse health effects from inhalation exposure to the trichothecene-producing mold Stachybotrys chartarum, controversy remains. Currently, there are no reliable assays suitable for clinical diagnosis of exposure. We hypothesized that satratoxin G (SG) -albumin adducts may serve as biomarkers of exposure to this fungus.
