Potential modifiable factors associated with late-life cognitive trajectories.

OBJECTIVE: There is variability across individuals in cognitive aging. To investigate the associations of several modifiable factors with high and low cognitive performance. METHODS: Data came from 17,724 community-dwelling individuals aged 65-98 years. Global cognition, verbal fluency, episodic memory, and psychomotor speed were assessed over up to seven years. Group-based multi-trajectory modeling identified distinct cognitive trajectories. Structural equation modeling examined the direct/indirect associations of social/behavioral factors and several chronic conditions with cognitive trajec

Lower functional hippocampal connectivity in healthy adults is jointly associated with higher levels of leptin and insulin resistance.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic dysregulation is currently considered a major risk factor for hippocampal pathology. The aim of the present study was to characterize the influence of key metabolic drivers on functional connectivity of the hippocampus in healthy adults. METHODS: Insulin resistance was directly quantified by measuring steady-state plasma glucose (SSPG) concentration during the insulin suppression test and fasting levels of insulin, glucose, leptin, and cortisol, and measurements of body mass index and waist circumference were obtained in a sample of healthy cognitively intact adults (n =

High Mobility Group Protein 1 and Dickkopf-Related Protein 1 in Schizophrenia and Treatment-Resistant Schizophrenia: Associations With Interleukin-6, Symptom Domains, and Neurocognitive Impairments.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia (SCZ) and treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS) are associated with aberrations in immune-inflammatory pathways. Increased high mobility group protein 1 (HMGB1), an inflammatory mediator, and Dickkopf-related protein (DKK1), a Wnt/β-catenin signaling antagonist, affect the blood-brain barrier and induce neurotoxic effects and neurocognitive deficits. AIM: The present study aims to examine HMGB1 and DDK1 in nonresponders to treatments (NRTT) with antipsychotics (n = 60), partial RTT (PRTT, n = 55), and healthy controls (n = 43) in relation to established markers of

Revised Framingham Stroke Risk Profile: Association with Cognitive Status and MRI-Derived Volumetric Measures.

BACKGROUND: The Framingham Stroke Risk Profile (FSRP) was created in 1991 to estimate 10-year risk of stroke. It was revised in 2017 (rFSRP) to reflect the modern data on vascular risk factors and stroke risk. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the association between the rFSRP and cognitive and brain aging outcomes among participants from the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center (NACC) Uniform Data Set (UDS). METHODS: Cross-sectional rFSRP was computed at baseline for 19,309 participants (mean age = 72.84, SD = 8.48) from the NACC-UDS [9,697 (50.2%) normal cognition, 4,705 (24.4%) MCI, 4,90

Pain, aging and dementia: Towards a biopsychosocial model.

Dementia is a progressive disease associated with irreversible impairment and loss of cognitive abilities. About half of older people with dementia experience pain. In this paper, we propose that pain in older people with dementia can be conceptualized as the final result of the interaction of three heterogeneous phenomena, pain, aging, and dementia, which are created and influenced by the interactions of predisposing, lifelong, and current biopsychosocial factors. We review pain assessment in people with dementia using both self-report and observational/behavioral measures. We then review the

Impact of Depressive Symptoms on Memory for Emotional Words in Mild Cognitive Impairment and Late-Life Depression.

BACKGROUND: Amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) and late-life depression (LLD) are associated with increased risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD). This is also true for aMCI with concomitant depressive symptoms (aMCI/D+), but few studies have investigated this syndrome. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to clarify the association between cognitive and depressive symptoms in individuals at risk for AD by examining episodic memory for emotional stimuli in aMCI, aMCI/D+, and LLD. METHODS: Participants were 34 patients with aMCI, 20 patients with aMCI/D+, 19 patients with LLD, and 28 healthy elderly adults

Visual dominance and multisensory integration changes with age.

Objects comprise of visual and auditory signatures that arrive through distinct sensory channels. Exposure to cross-modal events sets up expectations about what a given object most likely "sounds" like, and vice versa, thereby facilitating detection and recognition. Whereas episodic and working memory functions decline with age, the extent to which multisensory integration processes change with age remains an open question. In the present study, we examined whether multisensory integration processes play a compensatory role in normal aging. Magnetoencephalography recordings of semantically-rel

Comparison of entorhinal cortex atrophy between early-onset and late-onset Alzheimer's disease using the VSRAD, a specific and sensitive voxel-based morphometry.

BACKGROUND: The most characteristic symptom of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is episodic memory impairment, which is closely associated with atrophy of the entorhinal cortex. Meanwhile, atypical symptoms are more frequent in early-onset AD than in late-onset AD, suggesting that the former subtype has less atrophy in the entorhinal cortex. Therefore, we investigated whether the degree of atrophy in the entorhinal cortex is different between the two subtypes of AD using the voxel-based specific regional analysis system for AD (VSRAD) targeting this region. METHODS: The subjects consisted of 198 pati

Neural correlates of craving and resisting craving for tobacco in nicotine dependent smokers.

Craving is a significant factor which can lead to relapse during smoking quit attempts. Attempts to resist urges to smoke during cue-elicited craving have been shown to activate regions in the brain associated with decision-making, anxiety regulation and visual processing. In this study, 32 treatment-seeking, nicotine-dependent smokers viewed blocks of smoking and neutral cues alternating with rest periods during magnetic resonance imaging scanning in a 3T Siemens scanner (Siemens AG, Erlangen, Bavaria, Germany). While viewing cues or control images, participants were instructed either to 'all

An fMRI investigation of the fronto-striatal learning system in women who exhibit eating disorder behaviors.

In the present study, we sought to examine whether the fronto-striatal learning system, which has been implicated in bulimia nervosa, would demonstrate altered BOLD activity during probabilistic category learning in women who met subthreshold criteria for bulimia nervosa (Sub-BN). Sub-BN, which falls within the clinical category of Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS), is comprised of individuals who demonstrate recurrent binge eating, efforts to minimize their caloric intake and caloric retention, and elevated levels of concern about shape, weight, and/or eating, but just fail to m

Association study of serotonin transporter gene polymorphisms with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome in Chinese Han population.

BACKGROUND: Since the serotonin (5-HT) is associated with circadian rhythm and breathing regulation, the serotonin transporter (5-HTT), which plays an important role in serotoninergic transmission, might be a strong candidate gene in the pathogenesis of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association of 5-HTT gene polymorphisms with OSAS and clinical characteristics. METHODS: We genotyped the 5-HTT gene linked polymorphic region (5-HTTLPR) and a variable number of tandem repeats at intron 2 (STin2.VNTR) in 254 OSAS patients and 338 healthy controls in Chine

Astrocytic adrenoceptors: a major drug target in neurological and psychiatric disorders?

Considerable attention has recently been paid to astrocyte functions, which are briefly summarized. A large amount of data is available about adrenoceptor expression and function in astrocytes, some of it dating back to the 1970's and some of it very recent. This material is reviewed in the present paper. The brain is innervated by noradrenergic fibers extending from locus coeruleus in the brain stem, which in turn is connected to a network of adrenergic and noradrenergic nuclei in the medulla and pons, contributing to the control of (nor)adrenergic, serotonergic, dopaminergic and cholinergic

Stable sentiment and persistent dynamics in US economic news over 45 years.

Collective emotion is often inferred from the tone of mass media, but such emotion is not directly observed. One approximation is to extract sentiment from text and use sentiment indexes as proxies to study the temporal organization of news sentiment. Using a daily index of US economic news sentiment from 24 newspapers (1980-2025), we examine whether the response time of this sentiment process has changed. Although the average balance of positive and negative coverage has remained broadly stable, the persistence of news sentiment states has increased substantially. In dynamical terms, this imp

Rapidly Evolving Aphasia as a Diagnostic Clue in First-Episode Psychosis: A Case Report of Anti-NMDAR Encephalitis.

Anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor encephalitis frequently presents with isolated psychiatric symptoms indistinguishable from primary psychosis, delaying diagnosis. The authors have described a previously healthy 35-year-old woman admitted with abrupt first-episode psychosis, who (within 48 hours and without seizures, movement disorder, or altered consciousness) developed a true aphasic syndrome, fluctuating output with semantic and phonemic paraphasias and intermittent mutism, distinct from the disorganized speech of primary psychosis. The emergence of focal language disturbance prompted neur

Case 351.

History A 76-year-old man with a medical history of diabetes, hypertension, and dilated cardiomyopathy developed new symptoms of confusion, repeated falls, and urinary incontinence over the course of 3-4 months, which worsened over a 2-week period, leading to presentation at the emergency room. His partner reported that before this, he had no memory or movement disorders, but now he was experiencing memory lapses, such as forgetting his mother's recent death, and functional cognitive problems, including an inability to remember how to perform tasks that were previously simple for him, such as

Coordinated expansion of memory T follicular helper and B cells mediates spontaneous clearance of HCV reinfection.

INTRODUCTION: Follicular helper T cells are essential for helping in the maturation of B cells and the production of neutralizing antibodies (NAbs) during primary viral infections. However, their role during recall responses is unclear. Here, we used hepatitis C virus (HCV) reinfection in humans as a model to study the recall collaborative interaction between circulating CD4 T follicular helper cells (cTfh) and memory B cells (MBCs) leading to the generation of NAbs. METHODS: We evaluated this interaction longitudinally in subjects who have spontaneously resolved primary HCV infection during
