IMU Motion Capture Method with Adaptive Tremor Attenuation in Teleoperation Robot System.

Teleoperation robot systems can help humans perform tasks in unstructured environments. However, non-intuitive control interfaces using only a keyboard or joystick and physiological tremor reduce the performance of teleoperation. This paper presents an intuitive control interface based on the wearable device gForcePro+ armband. Two gForcePro+ armbands are worn at the centroid of the upper arm and forearm, respectively. Firstly, the kinematics model of the human arm is established, and the inertial measurement units (IMUs) are used to capture the position and orientation information of the end

Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography of the Choriocapillaris in Age-Related Macular Degeneration.

The advent of optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) has allowed for remarkable advancements in our understanding of the role of the choriocapillaris in age-related macular degeneration (AMD). As a relatively new imaging modality, techniques to analyze and quantify choriocapillaris images are still evolving. Quantification of the choriocapillaris requires careful consideration of many factors, including the type of OCTA device, segmentation of the choriocapillaris slab, image processing techniques, and thresholding method. OCTA imaging shows that the choriocapillaris is impaired in in

Recent advances in biological applications of nanomaterials through defect engineering.

In recent years, defect engineering sprung up in the artificial nanomaterials (NMs) has attracted significant attention, since the physical and chemical properties of NMs could be largely optimized based on the rational control of different defect types and densities. Defective NMs equipped with the improved electric and catalytic ability, would be widely utilized as the photoelectric device and catalysts to alleviate the growing demands of industrial production and environmental treatments. In particular, considering that the features of targeting, adsorptive, loading and optical could be adj

Vomiting in Neuromyelitis Optica: An Atypical Presentation.

Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO), also known as Devic's disease, is a demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system (CNS) that majorly involves the optic nerves and the spinal cord. It is an idiopathic and an autoimmune disorder. The patient typically presents with symptoms pertaining to the eye or spinal cord, such as a decrease in visual acuity, visual field defects, pain in the eyes, loss of vision, numbness, and weakness of the limbs with or without bladder dysfunction. Vomiting, however, is an atypical presentation of this disorder. We report here a case of an 18-year-old female who pres

Application of Navigated Ultrasound for Assessment of the Anterior Pelvic Plane in Patients With Degenerative Hip Diseases.

OBJECTIVES: Correct positioning of the acetabular cup is the key for successful total-hip replacement. In common clinical practice, the target alignment of the cup is defined with respect to the anterior pelvic plane. In patients with substantial anterior pelvic plane inclination, this condition may lead to inappropriate distribution of the load on the cup, as most of the forces exerted within the hip joint act along the vertical axis. With the known pelvic inclination, it is possible to readjust the position of the cup with respect to the individual posture of the patient. In this work, we pr

Sutureless 25-Gauge Pars Plana Vitrectomy Combined with Retropupillary Fixation of an Iris-Claw Intraocular Lens.

BACKGROUND: The surgical case of a dropped intraocular lens inside the vitreous cavity constitutes a real challenge for the operating surgeon. Herein, we describe a case series where an alternative optical rehabilitation technique for late intraocular lens-bag complex dislocation has been used. METHODS: A modern vitrectomy device was used to remove the capsule with the dropped intraocular lens using sutureless 25-gauge pars plana vitrectomy. To ensure a better aesthetic result, with faster patient recovery and a reduced number of operations, the whole procedure was performed during the same o

[A treatment of neuromyelitis optica (Devic's disease) during pregnancy].

Neuromyelitis optica (Devic's disease) is an inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system that mainly affects spinal cord, optic nerve and brain regions with high aquaporin 4 antigen expression. This is a severe autoimmune disease caused by autoantibodies directed against aquaporin 4 and associated with high morbidity and mortality. Unlike other inflammatory conditions such as multiple sclerosis or rheumatoid polyarthritis, pregnancy does not seem to influence the activity of neuromyelitis optica, hence the need for a thorough treatment during pregnancy. Corticosteroid ther

A SELDI-TOF approach to ecotoxicology: comparative profiling of low molecular weight proteins from a marine diatom exposed to CdSe/ZnS quantum dots.

Quantum dots (QDs), namely semiconductor nanocrystals, due to their particular optical and electronic properties, have growing applications in device technology, biotechnology and biomedical fields. Nevertheless, the possible threat to human health and the environment have attracted increasing attention as the production and applications of QDs increases rapidly while standard evaluation of safety lags. In the present study we performed proteomic analyses, by means of 2D gel electrophoresis and Surface Enhanced Laser Desorption Ionization-Time of Flight-Mass Spectrometry (SELDI-TOF-MS). We aim

Repeated occurrence of slow flow phenomenon during and late after sirolimus-eluting stent implantation.

A 78-year-old man with unstable angina showed 90% stenosis in the proximal left anterior descending artery. Pre-procedural intravascular ultrasound revealed ruptured plaque and attenuated plaque in the lesion. Under these conditions, two overlapping sirolimus-eluting stent (SES) implantation in this lesion resulted in slow flow which was recovered by intracoronary nitrates, nicorandil, and nitroprusside without further complications. When the patient showed up again 5 years later with recurrence of angina pectoris, angiography revealed a hazy ulcerated in-stent restenosis (ISR) at the site of

Real-time artifact filtering in continuous VEPs/fMRI recording.

Continuous recording of Visual Evoked Potentials (VEPs) and functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) exploits the VEPs high temporal resolution and the fMRI high spatial resolution. In this work, we present a new method of continuous VEPs/fMRI recording to study visual function in seven normal subjects. Our real-time artifact filtering is characterized by a procedure based on an analytical study of echo-planar imaging (EPI) sequence parameters related electro-encephalogram (EEG)-artifact shapes. The magnetic field artifacts were minimized by using a dedicated amagnetic device and by a subt

Autoimmunity to myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein in rats mimics the spectrum of multiple sclerosis pathology.

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by perivenous inflammation and focal destruction of myelin. Many attempts have been undertaken previously to create animal models of chronic inflammatory demyelinating diseases through autoimmunity or virus infection. Recently, however, a new model of myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) induced autoimmune encephalomyelitis became available, which, in a very standardized and predictable way, leads to chronic (relapsing or progressive) disease and widespread CNS demyelination. In the present study we actively induced MOG-ex

Effect of laser treatment on the root canal of human teeth.

The purpose of this study was to examine the morphological and temperature changes of the apical portion of human extracted teeth treated by Nd: YAG, CO2 and Argon-lasers. Seventy-two single-rooted human teeth were studied. The root canals were prepared conventionally. Laser treatment of the apical portion of the canal was carried out by means of an optic fiber or metal tip. Temperatures were recorded thermographically. Two-thirds of the specimens were stained with black India ink and 36% silver ammonium fluoride solution. All specimens were irradiated by the three types of lasers at several i

A new technique for measurements on long bones: development of a new instrument and techniques comparison.

In this paper we present a new instrument for measurements on long bones. The instrument is based on the use of a digital coordinatometer-goniometer connected to an optical collimator: such device allows angles as well as lengths to be measured. With regard to observing procedures, an innovative method for bone axis location by points has been applied. It is also possible to locate an axis using a symmetry and tangency criterion. As for torsion angles, the proposed technique is absolutely new; it utilizes a reference plane, which the bone must be leaned against, and the symmetry conditions tha

Advanced rectal lesions: Best practices for assessment and management.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Advanced rectal lesions (ARLs), including large laterally spreading lesions (LSLs), villous or high-grade dysplastic adenomas, and early rectal cancers, constitute a critical transitional category between benign adenoma and invasive carcinoma. Historically, radical surgery was liberally employed for these lesions, often resulting in significant morbidity and permanent stoma formation. Contemporary endoscopic and transanal techniques permit curative resection while preserving anorectal function, but careful assessment is mandatory to avoid undertreatment of covert cancers.

Emmetropization in chicks uses optical vergence and relative distance cues to decode defocus.

When visual information is confined to one object plane, the emmetropization end-point is adjusted in accord with the corresponding incident optical vergence at the eye [Proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Myopia (2000) 113]. We now report the effect of adding extra visual information beyond the target plane. Visual conditions were controlled using a cone-lens system: black Maltese cross targets on white opaque backgrounds (OMX) were attached to the open faces of 2.5 cm translucent cones fitted with either 0, +25 or +40 D imaging lenses. An alternative target (TMX) was made by s

Synergy and Competition of Dual Chirality in the Chirality-Induced Spin Selectivity of Supramolecular Helices.

The construction of supramolecular assemblies with hierarchical chirality provides a new platform for exploring the chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect. In this work, we systematically investigate CISS in multichiral systems using a class of multilayer helical architectures. Each layer consists of stacked helical rings with well-defined local chirality. By introducing controlled interlayer twisting, a global helical handedness is imposed, forming tubular multichiral helices. Including geometric spin-orbit coupling and dephasing in our theoretical model, we find that the interplay

Effect of Continuous-to-Discontinuous Layer Transition on the Interface Evolution and Dielectric Response in Subnanometric Al2O3/TiO2 Laminates Grown by Atomic Layer Deposition.

Recently, Al2O3/TiO2 nanolaminates (ATA NLs) have emerged as promising materials because of their excellent optical, mechanical, and dielectric properties. However, as individual sublayer thicknesses (ts) decrease into the subnanometer range, the impact of interfacial structure evolution on performance degradation remains poorly understood. Here, we have fabricated a series of amorphous subnanometric ATA NLs, with ts values ranging from ∼1 to 0.17 nm, using atomic layer deposition (ALD) and systematically investigated how interfacial evolution affects their structural, electronic, and dielectr
