INTRODUCTION: There are many suitable techniques for the treatment of soft tissue defects of the lower limb. Older subjects often with multiple comorbidities, presenting with a laterally located and complex defect, can be challenging to treat. This cohort are often unsuited to long procedures or multi-stage reconstruction and so one is faced with a paucity of options. In such instances, we use the peroneus brevis (PB) muscle flap as a single stage procedure.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective study evaluating the use of PB flaps in lower limb injury. Subjects were collated using a database

BACKGROUND: For the treatment of coronoid process fractures, medial, lateral, anterior, anteromedial, and posterior approaches have been increasingly reported; however, there is no general consensus on the method of fixation of coronal fractures. Here, we present a highly-extensile minimally invasive approach to treat coronoid process fractures using a mini-plate that can achieve anatomic reduction, stable fixation, and anterior capsular repair. Further, the study aimed to determine the complication rate of the anterior minimally invasive approach and to evaluate functional and clinical patien

In previous studies, we have demonstrated that stress response-induced high glucocorticoid levels could be the underlying cause of traumatic heterotopic ossification (HO), and we have developed a glucocorticoid-induced ectopic mineralization (EM) mouse model by systemic administration of a high dose of dexamethasone (DEX) to animals with muscle injury induced by cardiotoxin injection. In this model, dystrophic calcification (DC) developed into HO in a cell autonomous manner. However, it is not clear how DC is formed after DEX treatment. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to explore how glucoco

PURPOSE: To report the outcome of a novel fixation technique using three high-strength sutures which is including articular buttress suture, cerclage suture, and tension band with off-loading triceps suture (triple suture fixation) in the treatment of displaced comminuted olecranon fracture with a stable ulnohumeral joint (Mayo type IIB). The rationale of using this technique is that the sutures have been used to stabilize multiple fracture fragments in all sides of the olecranon.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between July 2018 and July 2021, 10 patients (7 women, 3 men; mean age, 49.9 years; mean fo

BACKGROUND: Few studies have reported on the outcome of revision total hip arthroplasty (THA) for ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Therefore, we sought to investigate the clinical and radiographic outcomes of revision THA in patients with AS.
HYPOTHESIS: The mid-term outcome of revision THA in AS patients was comparable to conventional revision THA.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-one patients with AS who underwent revision THA (on a total of 51 hips) between April 2004 and June 2018 were included. The mean follow-up duration was 7.5±3.6 years (3.0-15.8 years). Clinical outcomes were assessed using

BACKGROUND: Varus posteromedial rotatory instability is a typical pattern of elbow injury that involves fracture of the anteromedial facet (AMF) of the coronoid, as well as injuries to the lateral ligament complex and the posterior bundle of the medial collateral ligament. Some authors support the idea that subtype II AMF coronoid fractures require fixation to restore elbow stability, but this topic is still an issue in the literature. The purpose of this study was to assess the clinical and radiologic outcomes of arthroscopically assisted reduction and internal fixation (ARIF) of AMF fracture

BACKGROUND: Lateral humeral condyle fractures are the second most common fracture around the elbow in children. However, the association of an elbow dislocation is a rare entity. Therefore, literature on young patients with this uncommon combination is sparse. We aimed to perform a systematic review of the literature searching for pediatric lateral condyle humerus fractures associated to elbow dislocation.
METHODS: A systematic review of the PubMed and Embase databases was conducted for peer-reviewed literature between 1960 and 2020. Two reviewers filtered the results, looking for articles in

BACKGROUND: Bilateral osseous ankylosed hips secondary to ankylosis spondylitis (AS) are relatively rare but impact the quality of life hugely. Cementless total hip arthroplasty (THA) for bilateral osseous ankylosed hips with AS is a challenging procedure. No previous literature compares the clinical outcomes of synchronous and sequential bilateral THA for these special patients.
METHODS: 23 patients (46 hips) were retrospectively analyzed and divided into bilateral THA synchronously (group A) and sequentially (group B). The clinical measurement, radiological assessments, and complications we

BACKGROUND: Optimum management for the elderly acetabular fracture remains undefined. Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) in this population does not allow early weight-bearing and has an increased risk of failure. This study aimed to define outcomes of total hip arthroplasty (THA) in the setting of an acetabular fracture and compared delayed THA after acetabular ORIF (ORIF delayed THA) and acute fixation and THA (ORIF acute THA).
METHODS: All acetabular fractures in patients older than 60 years who underwent ORIF between 2007 and 2018 were reviewed (n = 85). Of those, 14 underwent OR

AIMS: Whether to perform hybrid surgery (HS) in contrast to anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) when treating patients with multilevel cervical disc degeneration remains a controversial subject. To resolve this we have undertaken a meta-analysis comparing the outcomes from HS with ACDF in this condition.
METHODS: Seven databases were searched for studies of HS and ACDF from inception of the study to 1 September 2019. Both random-effects and fixed-effects models were used to evaluate the overall effect of the C2-C7 range of motion (ROM), ROM of superior/inferior adjacent levels, adj

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is a rare genetic disease characterized by the formation of extraskeletal bone, or heterotopic ossification (HO), in soft connective tissues such as skeletal muscle. All familial and sporadic cases with a classic clinical presentation of FOP carry a gain-of-function mutation (R206H; c.617 G > A) in ACVR1, a cell surface receptor that mediates bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling. The BMP signaling pathway is recognized for its chondro/osteogenic-induction potential, and HO in FOP patients forms ectopic but qualitatively normal endochondral bone

INTRODUCTION: Treatment of moderate to severe slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is controversial. Over the last years, 3 institutions in Argentina adopted the modified Dunn procedure for capital realignment in selected cases of SCFE. Our aim in this study was to evaluate the clinical outcome and the rate of complications of patients who had undergone surgical hip dislocation and capital realignment.
METHODS: A multicenter retrospective cohort study of patients who received the modified Dunn procedure from January 2009 to 2013 was performed. Data concerning clinical features, surgical t
