[Adolescents in the Pediatric Emergency Department: Detection of risk behavior and depression].

OBJECTIVES: The main objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of social and psychological problems, risk behaviors, and depression symptoms in a population of adolescents consulting in a Pediatric Emergency Department of a general hospital, and compare these according to the reasons for consulting. METHODS: Observational monocentric study, in the Pediatric Emergency Department of a general hospital in Britany, France, between January and September 2013, using a questionnaire dispensed to 12- to 18-year-old adolescents. The questions covered habits, school, symptoms, risk behavio

Vagal tone as a resilience factor in children with prenatal cocaine exposure.

Studies have investigated the potential effects of prenatal cocaine exposure (CE) on children's development. However, few studies have examined predictors of resilient outcomes in this population. We examined vagal tone (VT) as a resilience factor in prenatal CE. Utilizing data from the Maternal Lifestyle Study, a cumulative risk index was derived for children with and without prenatal CE. Presence of CE and other prenatal drugs was summed with postnatal risks in infancy to yield a 15-item risk index. Preschool cognitive outcomes, problem behaviors, and adaptive behaviors were measured. VT was…

Executive dysfunction in substance dependent individuals during drug use and abstinence: an examination of the behavioral, cognitive and emotional correlates of addiction.

Increasing evidence indicates that substance-dependent individuals (SDI) are impaired in executive control tasks relying on different systems within the prefrontal cortex (PFC). Three different functional systems have been described: the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPC), orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) circuits. Dysfunction within each PFC system is associated with different behavioral, cognitive, and emotional abnormalities. Few studies have conducted an exhaustive examination of all these different factors in SDI. In this study, SDI (including alcohol, co

Correlates of hepatitis C virus infection in homeless men: a latent variable approach.

Homeless individuals are at risk for numerous health problems including Hepatitis C virus (HCV). HCV is primarily caused by sharing of equipment associated with injection drug use (IDU). In the current study, we assessed differences among HCV-negative and HCV-positive homeless men residing in Los Angeles (N = 198; about 50% HCV positive) on a number of risk factors and behaviors. Findings revealed several significant correlates of HCV-positive status. HCV-positivity was significantly and positively associated with a history of substance use (IDU and non-IDU), recent IDU-related behaviors inclu

Time, Control, and the Nervous System.

Because organisms are able to sense its passage, it is perhaps tempting to treat time as a sensory modality, akin to vision or audition. Indeed, certain features of sensory estimation, such as Weber's law, apply to timing and sensation alike. However, from an organismal perspective, time is a derived feature of other signals, not a stimulus that can be readily transduced by sensory receptors. Its importance for biology lies in the fact that the physical world comprises a complex dynamical system. The multiscale spatiotemporal structure of sensory and internally generated signals within an orga

Compulsive buying behavior and its association with emotional distress, depression, and impulsivity in general population: an online survey.

BACKGROUND: Compulsive buying behavior or pathological buying is increasingly being recognized as a psychiatric disorder, and various psychosocial factors have been proposed to contribute to this problem. This study aimed to identify the association between compulsive buying behavior, stress, anxiety, depression, and impulsivity. METHODS: This cross-sectional, online survey used Google Forms to collect sociodemographic and clinical details of the participants between June 2021 and August 2021. In addition, they were evaluated on Pathological Buying Screener, Depression, Anxiety and Stress Sca

The associations between suicide-related behaviors, prefrontal dysfunction in emotional cognition, and personality traits in mood disorders.

Suicide is a serious public health problem, and it is urgent to identify biomarkers associated with suicide to prevent it. We aimed to clarify the association across suicidal behavior, personality traits, and brain activation by emotional stimulation tasks using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in patients with mood disorders. 11 mood disorder patients with a history of suicide attempt (MDSA), 18 mood disorder patients with no history of suicide attempt (MDNSA), and 17 healthy individuals were studied. The MDSA patients showed significantly high impulsivity and hopeless compared to healthy su

Emotional and social cognitive predictors of sexual risk indicators among adolescents in committed and noncommitted partnerships.

INTRODUCTION: Little is known about the risks of casual sexual partnerships during adolescence despite many adolescents having sex within noncommitted relationships. We applied theories of adult attachment, planned behavior, and problem behavior to examine emotional and social cognitive predictors of variability in sexual risk indicators among adolescents in committed and noncommitted partnerships. METHOD: Data were drawn from 801 adolescents (53.6% females; aged 14-20 years (M = 16.25)) living in a southern state in the United States. RESULTS: Findings showed that healthy sex attitudes were…

Weight stigma and eating behavior: A review of the literature.

Weight stigma is a pervasive social problem, and this paper reviews the evidence linking weight stigma to eating behavior. Correlational studies consistently find that experiences with weight stigma are associated with unhealthy eating behaviors and eating pathology (such as binge eating, skipping meals), although results vary somewhat depending on the sample being studied and the specific stigma/eating constructs being assessed. Experimental studies consistently find that manipulations such as priming overweight stereotypes, exposure to stigmatizing content, and social exclusion all lead to i

Cognitive, Emotional, Temperament, and Personality Trait Correlates of Suicidal Behavior.

Suicide is one of the leading causes of violent death in many countries and its prevention is included in worldwide health objectives. Currently, the DSM-5 considers suicidal behavior as an entity that requires further study. Among the three validators required for considering a psychiatric disorder, there is one based on psychological correlates, biological markers, and patterns of comorbidity. This review includes the most important and recent studies on psychological factors: cognitive, emotional, temperament, and personality correlates (unrelated to diagnostic criteria). We included classi

Let the pigeon drive the bus: pigeons can plan future routes in a room.

The task of determining an optimal route to several locations is called the traveling salesperson problem (TSP). The TSP has been used recently to examine spatial cognition in humans and non-human animals. It remains unclear whether or not the decision process of animals other than non-human primates utilizes rigid rule-based heuristics, or whether non-human animals are able to flexibly 'plan' future routes/behavior based on their knowledge of multiple locations. We presented pigeons in a One-way and Round-Trip group with TSPs that included two or three destinations (feeders) in a laboratory e

Test-retest reliability of self-reported drug treatment variables.

We conducted two studies to assess the test-retest reliability of drug treatment questions in the Risk Behavior Assessment (RBA) and Risk Behavior Follow-Up Assessment (RBFA). In Study 1, 218 active drug users participated in an RBA 48-hour test-retest reliability assessment; in Study 2, 257 active drug users participated in an RBFA 48-hour test-retest reliability assessment. Results revealed acceptable reliability for the main drug treatment question in both the RBA (.85) and RBFA (.85): "Have you ever in your lifetime been in a drug treatment or detoxification center?" Mediastinum thymoma diagnosed by FNA and ThinPrep technique: a case report.

Thymoma is a primary tumor of the thymus epithelial cells. It may be asymptomatic or accompanied with atypical clinical symptoms or paraneoplastic syndromes, such as myasthenia gravis. The biological behavior of thymomas is unpredictable. The invasion of the capsule or the adjacent tissues is the major diagnostic criterion for the malignant behavior of these tumors. This is an interesting case of thymoma diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNA) and ThinPrep technique, in a 54-year-old female patient with a history of gastric adenocarcinoma. Cytology of the mediastinum mass revealed a m

Behavioral forms of stress management for individuals with Asperger syndrome.

Although many children and youth with AS exhibit anxiety that may lead to challenging behaviors, stress and subsequent behaviors should be viewed as an integral part of the disorder [36]. As such, it is important to understand the cycle of behaviors to prevent seemingly minor events from escalating. Although understanding the cycle of tantrums, rage, and meltdowns is important, behavior changes will not occur unless the function of the behavior is understood and the student is provided instruction and support in using (1) strategies that increase social understanding and problem solving, (2) t

A preliminary survey of rhinotillexomania in an adolescent sample.

BACKGROUND: Rhinotillexomania is a recent term coined to describe compulsive nose picking. There is little world literature on nose-picking behavior in the general population. METHOD: We studied nose-picking behavior in a sample of 200 adolescents from 4 urban schools. RESULTS: Almost the entire sample admitted to nose picking, with a median frequency of 4 times per day; the frequency was > 20 times per day in 7.6% of the sample. Nearly 17% of subjects considered that they had a serious nose-picking problem. Other somatic habits such as nail biting, scratching in a specific spot, or pulling

Saving our children: strategies to empower African-American adolescents to reduce their risk for HIV infection.

Adolescence is normally a healthy period of life. For some young people it is a period of experimentation with risky behavior. For others, it marks the development of habitual risk behaviors that persist into adulthood. Of special concern is adolescent involvement with sexual behaviors that increase the risk of infection with HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Nurses who work with adolescents are seeing an increase in STDs, including HIV infection occurring disproportionately among African-American adolescents. Although the use of condoms can reduce the risk of these sexually

Benzodiazepines and exposure-based cognitive behavior therapies for panic disorder: conclusions from combined treatment trials.

OBJECTIVE: Concurrent use of benzodiazepines and psychotherapy for panic disorder is a prevalent but highly controversial practice. Although there are many rationales for that approach, critics contend that benzodiazepines foster drug abuse and dependence and undermine psychosocial treatments in various ways. The authors examine that controversy in the light of recent empirical findings and offer some tentative conclusions and recommendations. METHOD: Data from studies combining benzodiazepines and the leading psychosocial treatment for panic disorder, exposure-based cognitive behavior therap

Patients with rheumatoid arthritis at high risk for noncompliance with salicylate treatment regimens.

Recent studies indicate the adherence of many patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) to their treatment regimens is poor. Management of this problem depends on identification of noncompliant patients, followed by interventions to increase their level of adherence. In this study, 63 patients with RA receiving salicylate drugs completed a questionnaire during an outpatient visit. The questionnaire contained items believed to be predictive of future compliance, including patient self-predictions regarding future compliance, ratings of behavior in similar situations and barriers to compliance, su

Assessment and reduction of food stealing in Prader-Willi children.

A common behavior problem among Prader-Willi children is inappropriate foraging for food. Theft and subsequent consumption often go undetected and contribute to morbid obesity in many of these individuals. In this study an observational methodology was developed to assess food stealing in two children with Prader-Willi syndrome. The children were observed to steal food at a high rates under baseline conditions in three hospital settings. Subsequent treatment, based on differential reinforcement of other behavior (DRO), consisted of reinforcement of nonstealing at the end of progressively lengt
