Central projections of the mesencephalic nucleus of the fifth nerve: an autoradiographic study.

Projections of cells of the mesencephalic nucleus of the fifth nerve (Mes V) to brainstem structures in the cat were studied by labelling Mes V cells with tritiated leucine. Before the leucine injections were made, however, large kainic acid lesions were produced in the vicinity of Mes V cells because these neurons are resistant to being killed or injured by this neurotoxin. Thus Mes V cells were selectively labelled by the leucine even though they are scattered among many other neurons. Leucine injections near Mes V cells located in the mesencephalon, which are primarily the somata of jaw mus

Cervical Sensorimotor Control Does Not Change Over Time and Is Not Related to Chronic Idiopathic Neck Pain Characteristics: A 6-Month Longitudinal Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Cervical sensorimotor control (CSMC) outcomes have been suggested to be important in the assessment of individuals with neck pain, despite the lack of consistent supporting evidence that CSMC skills are related to neck pain. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate whether CSMC changes over time in individuals with chronic idiopathic neck pain and whether neck pain characteristics are associated with CSMC. DESIGN: A longitudinal observational study was performed. METHODS: A total 50 participants with chronic idiopathic neck pain and 50 matched participants who were he

Multisensory vestibular, vestibular-auditory, and auditory network effects revealed by parametric sound pressure stimulation.

Multisensory convergence and sensorimotor integration are important aspects for the mediation of higher vestibular cognitive functions at the cortical level. In contrast to the integration of vestibulo-visual or vestibulo-tactile perception, much less is known about the neural mechanism that mediates the integration of vestibular-otolith (linear acceleration/translation/gravity detection) and auditory processing. Vestibular-otolith and auditory afferents can be simultaneously activated using loud sound pressure stimulation, which is routinely used for testing cervical and ocular vestibular evo

Hearing, self-motion perception, mobility, and aging.

Hearing helps us know where we are relative to important events and objects in our environment and it allows us to track our changing position dynamically over space and time. Auditory cues are used in combination with other sensory inputs (visual, vestibular, proprioceptive) to help us perceive our own movements through space, known as self-motion perception. Whether we are maintaining standing balance, walking, or driving, audition can provide unique and important information to help optimize self-motion perception, and consequently to support safe mobility. Recent epidemiological and experi

Trigeminal isolated sensory neuropathy (TISN) and FOSMN syndrome: despite a dissimilar disease course do they share common pathophysiological mechanisms?

BACKGROUND: Patients presenting with bilateral trigeminal hypoesthesia may go on to have trigeminal isolated sensory neuropathy, a benign, purely trigeminal neuropathy, or facial-onset sensory motor neuronopathy (FOSMN), a malignant life-threatening condition. No diagnostic criteria can yet differentiate the two conditions at their onset. Nor is it clear whether the two diseases are distinct entities or share common pathophysiological mechanisms. METHODS: Seeking pathophysiological and diagnostic information to distinguish these two conditions at their onset, in this neurophysiological and mo

Assessment of postural stability using foam posturography at the chronic stage after acute unilateral peripheral vestibular dysfunction.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the utility of foam posturography for assessing equilibrium at the chronic stage after acute unilateral peripheral vestibulopathy. METHODS: Thirty-four consecutive patients (16 patients at the chronic stage) with acute unilateral peripheral vestibulopathy and absent caloric responses unilaterally were recruited, along with 66 healthy control subjects. Two-legged stance tasks were performed in 4 conditions: with eyes open or closed, with or without using foam rubber. We adopted 6 parameters: the movement velocity of the center of pressure, the envelopment area traced

Magnetically evoked inter-enlargement response: an assessment of ascending propriospinal fibers following spinal cord injury.

The aim of the present study was to characterize a novel electrophysiological assessment, the magnetically evoked interenlargement response (MIER), by defining the anatomical location of the fast conducting (large myelinated) ascending axons that mediate the response and the relationship between the response and locomotor function following experimental spinal cord injury. Electromyographic (EMG) responses were recorded from the triceps muscles following magnetic stimulation of one hip. Short-latency (approximately 6 ms) EMGs were recorded from triceps muscles in normal controls and following

Neural organization of the ventilatory activity in the frog, Rana catesbeiana. I.

In order to elucidate the neural basis for lung ventilation in the frog, we have investigated the efferent neural activity to oropharyngeal muscles in the decerebrate, paralyzed, unanesthetized bullfrog, Rana catesbeiana. Efferent motor output was recorded from the mandibular branch of the trigeminal (Vmd), the laryngeal branch of the vagus (Xl), and the main and sternohyoid branches of the hypoglossal nerve (Hm and Hsh, respectively). Two types of rhythmic bursting outputs were observed: (1) a high-frequency, low-amplitude, reciprocal oscillation between Vmd, a buccal levator nerve, and Hsh,

Preventive efficiency of neuromuscular training in reducing lower limb injuries among youth soccer athletes: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

UNLABELLED: Lower-limb injuries are common in youth soccer. Neuromuscular training (NMT) warm-ups are used, but the preventive effects across injury types in young players are unclear. This review quantified NMT effectiveness for lower-limb injury prevention in 8-18-year-old soccer players. A PRISMA-guided systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials was conducted. Four databases were searched up to October 2025 using keywords including soccer/football, neuromuscular training, balance, proprioception, plyometrics, injury prevention, ACL, ankle sprain, and hamstring strai…

Effectiveness of Kinesio Taping Combined With Neuromuscular Control Exercises on Pain and Function in Knee Osteoarthritis: A Multicenter Assessor-Blinded Randomized Controlled Trial Protocol.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a leading cause of functional impairment and decreased quality of life. Exercise is the recommended approach; however, adjunct interventions such as kinesio taping (KT) have gained attention for potential to reduce pain, improve proprioception, and enhance functional performance. Despite its growing clinical use, research on the effectiveness of combining KT with neuromuscular control exercises (NCE) in KOA remains limited. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the effectiveness of KT combined with NCE in reducing pain and improving functional …

A Study of 29 Pediatric Patients With Osteomyelitis Resulting From Neuropathy and Pressure Effects.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric osteomyelitis secondary to underlying neuropathies is a rare, complex, but clinically severe entity. Loss of protective pain sensation and proprioception predisposes children to repetitive unperceived microtrauma and chronic pressure ulceration, facilitating insidious progression to deep bone infection. Comprehensive pediatric studies documenting the presentation, diagnostic characteristics, microbiological spectrum, and long-term outcomes of this vulnerable cohort remain exceptionally scarce. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the clinical presentation, inflammatory biomarker u…

Histology of the fascial planes: a systematic review of the microstructural foundations of regional anesthesia.

BACKGROUND: Fascia, once viewed as a passive structural tissue, is now recognized as a biologically active interface integral to musculoskeletal stability, force transmission, proprioception, and nociception. Despite the increasing clinical use of fascial plane blocks, the microanatomy of fasciae relevant to regional anesthesia remains poorly characterized. Understanding their histological features-including innervation, vascularization, and microstructure-is critical to optimizing anesthetic efficacy and elucidating mechanisms of pain and tissue response. METHODS: This systematic review was …

A comparative study of collagen morphology and joint strength in anterior cruciate ligament repair and reconstruction models in rabbits.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) repair offers several theoretical advantages over reconstruction, including preservation of native proprioception and reduced donor-site morbidity. However, the current experimental models are predominantly limited to ACL reconstruction, leaving a critical gap in ACL repair research. This study introduces a novel rabbit model to evaluate osteointegration and mechanical strength at the tendon/ligament-bone interface following ACL repair and reconstruction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six male New Zealand White rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus), age…
