Cerebral microcirculatory pulse wave propagation and pulse wave amplitude mapping in retrospectively gated MRI.

To analyze cerebral arteriovenous pulse propagation and to generate phase-resolved pulse amplitude maps from a fast gradient-echo sequence offering flow-related enhancement (FREE). Brain MRI was performed using a balanced steady-state free precession sequence at 3T followed by retrospective k-space gating. The time interval of the pulse wave between anterior-, middle- and posterior cerebral artery territories and the superior sagittal sinus were calculated and compared between and older and younger groups within 24 healthy volunteers. Pulse amplitude maps were generated and compared to pseudo-

Elastin haploinsufficiency accelerates age-related structural and functional changes in the renal microvasculature and impairment of renal hemodynamics in female mice.

Age-related decline in functional elastin is associated with increased arterial stiffness, a known risk factor for developing cardiovascular disease. While the contribution of elastin insufficiency to the stiffening of conduit arteries is well described, little is known about the impact on the structure and function of the resistance vasculature, which contributes to total peripheral resistance and the regulation of organ perfusion. In this study, we determined how elastin insufficiency impinges on age-related changes in the structure and biomechanical properties of the renal microvasculature,

Fetal Umbilical Arterial Pulsatility Correlates With 2-Year Growth and Neurodevelopmental Outcomes in Congenital Heart Disease.

BACKGROUND: Children with congenital heart disease (CHD) are at risk of adverse long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes, believed to be, in part, secondary to prenatal insults. Placental pathology and altered fetal middle cerebral arterial (MCA) flow suggestive of brain sparing have been documented in fetal CHD. In the present study we investigated the relationship between MCA and umbilical arterial (UA) flow patterns in fetal transposition of the great arteries (d-TGA) and hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) and growth and 2-year neurodevelopmental outcomes. METHODS: We included children wi

Cerebrovascular function is preserved during mild hyperthermia in cervical spinal cord injury.

STUDY DESIGN: Experimental study. OBJECTIVES: Compromised cerebrovascular function likely contributes to elevated neurological risk in spinal cord injury (SCI). Passive heating offers many cardiovascular and neurological health benefits; therefore, we aimed to determine the effects of an acute bout of heating on cerebrovascular function in chronic SCI. METHODS: Persons with cervical SCI (n = 15) and uninjured controls (CON; n = 15) completed 60 min of lower limb hot water immersion (40 °C). Assessments of middle cerebral (MCA) and posterior cerebral artery (PCA) velocities, pulsatilities, an

Changes in testicular size, echotexture, and arterial blood flow associated with the attainment of puberty in Dorper rams raised in a subtropical climate.

There is a paucity of information on the relationships of testicular morphology, echotextural attributes, and blood flow dynamics with pubertal development of rams raised in a subtropical climate. Forty-five Dorper rams (24 rams aged 8-11 months and 21 rams aged 12-24 months) were examined using a portable ultrasound scanner connected to a 7.5-MHz transducer. Computer-assisted analyses of testicular ultrasonograms utilized commercially available Image ProPlus® analytical software. Spectral Doppler scans of testicular arteries were performed immediately after scrotal (B-mode) ultrasonography to

Lung tissue blood perfusion changes induced by in utero tracheal occlusion in a rabbit model of congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the impact of in utero tracheal occlusion (TO) on lung tissue blood perfusion, as measured by fractional moving blood volume (FMBV) and conventional spectral Doppler, in a rabbit model of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). METHODS: In 50 fetal rabbits, a left CDH was surgically created at 23 days of gestational age (GA). At 28 days of GA, the surviving CDH fetuses were randomly assigned to undergo either TO (CDH+TO group) or a sham operation (CDH group). Twenty littermates, which were not operated on, served as internal normal controls. At 30 days of GA, lung perfusi

A risk-based classification of late-onset fetal growth disorders according to intrapartum fetal compromise.

OBJECTIVE: Fetal growth restriction is associated with increased perinatal mortality and morbidity. We aimed to evaluate whether the combined assessment of birthweight centile (BWc) and cerebroplacental ratio expressed as multiples of the median (CPR MoM) during the late third trimester can identify distinct risk profiles for intrapartum fetal compromise (IFC) in late-onset fetal growth disorders and to propose a risk-based classification to guide birth management. METHODS: This retrospective observational study included 1530 singleton pregnancies with births between 34 and 41 weeks' gestatio

Placental and cerebral circulation in fetuses of mothers with polycystic ovary syndrome and the effect of Metformin exposure.

BACKGROUND: Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) have an increased risk of pregnancy complications and fetal growth restriction is reported. Increased head size has been reported in PCOS-offspring exposed to intrauterine metformin. We aimed to explore whether maternal PCOS-status, and the use of metformin, during pregnancy affect fetal cerebral and placental circulation. METHODS: The Pilot (2000-2003) and the PregMet2 (2012-2017) studies are randomized controlled trials where women with PCOS were randomized to metformin or placebo in pregnancy. Role of sFlt-1/PIGF ratio and uterine Doppler in pregnancies with chronic kidney disease suspected with Pre-eclampsia or HELLP syndrome.

PURPOSE: Pregnancies of women with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at higher risk of experiencing adverse perinatal (APO) and maternal outcome (AMO). Mean uterine artery pulsatility index (mUtA-PI) as well as the ratio of soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1) and placental growth factor (PlGF) are helpful tools in diagnosing pre-eclampsia (PE) in women with CKD. The aim of the study was to evaluate the role of sFlt-1/PIGF ratio and mUtA-PI as predictors for APO, AMO, preterm delivery and decline of kidney function in CKD pregnancies. METHODS: A total of 28 CKD pregnancies with suspecte

Robust segmentation methods with an application to aortic pulse wave velocity calculation.

Aortic stiffness has proven to be an important diagnostic and prognostic factor of many cardiovascular diseases, as well as an estimate of overall cardiovascular health. Pulse wave velocity (PWV) represents a good measure of the aortic stiffness, while the aortic distensibility is used as an aortic elasticity index. Obtaining the PWV and the aortic distensibility from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data requires diverse segmentation tasks, namely the extraction of the aortic center line and the segmentation of aortic regions, combined with signal processing methods for the analysis of the pu

Stimulation of luteinizing hormone subunit gene expression by pulsatile intracerebroventricular microinjection of galanin in female rats.

Although galanin, which exerts its effects both at the hypothalamic and pituitary level, has been implicated as an important neuroendocrine regulator of hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis activity, there is a lack of data concerning its involvement in the regulation of gonadotropin subunit gene expression. To elucidate whether galanin can influence luteinizing hormone (LH) subunit mRNA content, as well as affect gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) receptor activity, a model based on pulsatile (one pulse per hour over 5 h) galanin (1 nM) microinjections directly into the third cerebral ventr

Transcranial Doppler pulsatility indices as a measure of diffuse small-vessel disease.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Elevation in pulsatility indices (PIs) as measured by transcranial Doppler (TCD) have been postulated to reflect downstream increased vascular resistance caused by small-vessel ischemic disease. METHODS: The authors retrospectively compared TCD PIs and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) manifestations of small-vessel disease in 55 consecutive patients who underwent TCD studies and brain MRI within 6 months of each other during a 2-year period. RESULTS: Correlations between TCD middle cerebral artery PIs and MRI measures were as follows: periventricular hyperintensity (P

Fetal circulatory responses to maternal blood loss.

We examined the fetal circulatory responses to maternal blood loss in pregnant women during the third trimester. Seven healthy women with placenta previa and singleton pregnancies underwent phlebotomies in an autologous donation program. Four hundred milliliters of blood was collected within 15 min at 34 and 35 weeks of gestation. Continuous electric recordings of fetal heart rate were performed during the first blood collection, and the maternal uterine artery (UtA), umbilical artery (UmA) and fetal middle cerebral artery (MCA) Doppler velocity waveforms were recorded before, immediately afte

Amino acid neurotransmission and initiation of puberty: evidence from nonketotic hyperglycinemia in a female infant and gonadotropin-releasing hormone secretion by rat hypothalamic explants.

The pulse frequency of hypothalamic GnRH secretion increases at the onset of puberty. In rodents and primates, this process involves facilitatory and inhibitory effects mediated through hypothalamic N-methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA) and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors, respectively. Precocious puberty was observed in an 11-month-old girl with nonketotic hyperglycinemia. This was thought to result from the effect of high concentrations of glycine (112 micromol/L in cerebrospinal fluid; normal, 3-12) acting on NMDA receptors as a coagonist of glutamate. Regression of pubertal development

Training Status and Valsalva Maneuver Effects on Cerebrovascular Regulation during Acute Resistance Exercise.

BACKGROUND: Repeated exposure to large transient oscillations in mean arterial pressure (MAP)during resistance exercise may induce vascular adaptations and alter cerebrovascular regulation during systemic pressure challenges. This study characterized resting vascular and cerebrovascular function, the cerebral pressure-flow relationship during forced blood pressure oscillations, and cerebrovascular responses to leg press exercise with and without the Valsalva maneuver (VM) in resistance-trained and untrained individuals. HYPOTHESES: We hypothesized that resistance-trained individuals would exh
